Refresh once, test the service from another network, and temporarily remove a VPN or proxy if you use one. If the error follows the service across networks, only its operator can usually correct the underlying fault.
What a 502 Bad Gateway error means
HTTP requests often pass through more than one server. Your browser, game launcher, or in-game web view contacts an intermediary such as a reverse proxy, load balancer, content-delivery network, tunnel, or corporate gateway. That intermediary then contacts the origin service that actually handles the request.

Under HTTP Semantics (RFC 9110, Section 15.6.3), “The 502 (Bad Gateway) status code indicates that the server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, received an invalid response from an inbound server it accessed while attempting to fulfill the request.” In practical terms, the intermediary reached something upstream but could not use what came back.

your device → gateway, proxy, CDN, or tunnel → origin application
The failure can be at the origin itself, between the intermediary and origin, or in a network configuration that affects only your connection. The status does not automatically mean your computer, console, or home internet connection is broken.

Is the problem your connection or the website?
| What you observe | Most likely location | Useful evidence | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| The page or game service fails for everyone and on several networks | The intermediary or origin service | Independent outage reports, repeated 502 responses, or operator logs | Wait briefly, then contact the site or game operator |
| It fails only on your home network but works over a trusted mobile hotspot | Local DNS, VPN, proxy, firewall, router, or ISP path | Different result from a second network | Disable custom networking temporarily and check DNS and firewall rules |
| It fails only while a VPN or proxy is enabled | The VPN/proxy route or its upstream gateway | Immediate success after disconnecting | Leave it disabled for diagnosis and report the failing endpoint to the provider |
| The error appears intermittently during login, a store page, or multiplayer setup | A transient upstream or overloaded intermediary | Timestamped failures and successful retries | Retry after a short interval; operators should correlate logs with those times |
| Only one browser or launcher shows the error | That client’s proxy, cached session, extension, or network settings | Another browser or device works on the same connection | Use a private window, disable extensions, and compare the client’s proxy settings |
Visitor fixes: work through these in order
1. Refresh and retry once
Use the browser’s normal reload button, or close and reopen the game launcher page that failed. A brief origin restart, connection reset, or load-balancer hiccup may clear without any change on your side. Avoid repeatedly submitting purchases, account forms, or matchmaking requests while the result is uncertain; first verify whether the original action completed.
2. Check the same address from a second path
Open the exact URL on another device or a different trusted connection. A mobile hotspot is useful as a comparison, but do not use an untrusted public network for account or payment activity. If every path returns 502, the evidence points away from your device. If only one path fails, continue with the local checks below.
3. Test without a VPN or proxy
Disconnect a consumer VPN temporarily, or remove the manual proxy setting for one test. In Windows, open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy and review both automatic and manual proxy entries. A work or school proxy may be required for other services, so record its original setting and restore it after the test. If the site works only when the VPN or proxy is off, the route or gateway is the relevant fault; contact that provider rather than changing unrelated game files.

A firewall can block or alter the connection between your client and a gateway. Check whether a recent security-policy change, parental-control rule, DNS filter, or endpoint firewall applies to the browser or launcher. Do not permanently disable protection to “fix” a 502. Instead, make a short diagnostic test using the approved exception process on your network, then re-enable the protection and keep a note of the result.

5. Compare DNS resolution
DNS errors can send a client to an unreachable or incorrect endpoint. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run nslookup example.com, replacing the host with the domain that failed. Compare the answer on your normal connection with the answer from a second trusted network. You can also clear the local resolver cache with ipconfig /flushdns, reconnect, and try once more. A changed result identifies a resolver or routing difference, not proof that the origin is healthy.
6. Try a clean browser or client session
Use a private browsing window or a second browser to rule out an extension, stale session, or per-profile proxy. For a launcher, sign out only if you can safely sign back in, then retry after restarting it. Do not delete saved credentials or game data as a first response; a 502 is an upstream HTTP response and normally does not require reinstalling the game.
7. Record useful details before contacting support
- The full URL or service name, with private tokens and passwords removed.
- Your time zone and the exact time of each failed and successful attempt.
- Your network type, whether a VPN or proxy was active, and whether another network worked.
- The displayed status code, request identifier, or gateway-branded error page.
- Whether the failure affects browsing, account login, downloads, store functions, or multiplayer separately.
Send those details to the site, game, or network operator if the error persists. They can match your timestamp to gateway and origin logs; a screenshot alone usually cannot show which upstream connection failed.
What site and service operators should check
Operators need evidence from the intermediary and the origin, not a sequence of random restarts. Preserve the failure time, affected hostname, route, and request identifier before rotating logs.

1. Start with gateway, reverse-proxy, CDN, or tunnel logs
Find the component that generated the 502 and inspect its error-level records. Look for the upstream address, resolved IP, destination port, protocol, TLS result, connection state, and any request ID. Group failures by origin, endpoint, and time so an isolated application error is not confused with a wider network event.
For a Cloudflare Tunnel deployment, a 502 indicates that cloudflared cannot reach the configured origin service. Check the tunnel’s error-level logs first, then test the origin directly from the host where the tunnel connector runs.
2. Verify that the origin is running and listening
Confirm that the application process is healthy and bound to the address and port configured in the intermediary. A service listening only on loopback, on IPv4 instead of IPv6, or on a different port can look “up” locally while remaining unreachable from the gateway.
From the intermediary host, test direct reachability. Cloudflare’s example is:

curl -v http://localhost:8080
Replace the address and port with the actual origin. The verbose output helps distinguish a refused connection, a reset, a DNS failure, a TLS problem, and an HTTP response that the gateway cannot parse. Test the real hostname and scheme as well as loopback when host-header or certificate behavior matters.
3. Check routing, firewall rules, and DNS
Confirm that the intermediary can resolve the configured upstream name and reach the resulting address. Check security groups, host firewalls, container networks, service meshes, NAT rules, and route tables for recent changes. A DNS record that points to an old address can produce intermittent 502 responses when only some gateway instances receive the stale answer.
Test from the same network namespace or container used by the proxy; a successful test from an administrator’s laptop does not prove that the gateway has the same route. If multiple origin addresses exist, test each one and compare health-check results.
4. Match the upstream protocol and request details
Compare the gateway configuration with what the origin actually accepts:

- Connection and read timeouts.
An origin that closes a connection early, sends malformed headers, negotiates an unexpected protocol, or returns data the intermediary cannot parse can all lead to 502. Correct the mismatch at the component that owns the setting, then reproduce the request while capturing both sides of the exchange.
5. Classify the failure instead of treating every 502 alike
Proxy diagnostics described by RFC 9209 distinguish conditions such as refused connections, terminated connections, unroutable destinations, DNS errors, and HTTP protocol errors. The category determines the next test: a refused connection calls for process and port checks; a DNS error calls for resolver and record checks; a protocol error calls for headers, TLS, and response-format inspection.
6. Investigate IIS ARR 502.3 separately
In Internet Information Services Application Request Routing, 502.3 means ARR could not complete the request to the upstream server and send a response. Use the ARR error details to identify the underlying WinHTTP or connection error, then apply the corresponding process, route, TLS, or timeout check. The 502.3 label is a diagnostic subtype, not a claim that every IIS 502 has the same cause.

If some requests succeed, compare the successful and failed gateway instances, origin addresses, connection pools, and timestamps. Look for one unhealthy backend, exhausted worker processes, ephemeral-port exhaustion, a connection limit, or a deployment that left mixed protocol versions behind. A restart may temporarily hide the symptom, so keep the logs and fix the failing dependency or configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.502, 504, and 503: the practical difference
| Status | What the intermediary or server is saying | Typical investigation |
|---|---|---|
| 502 Bad Gateway | A gateway or proxy received an invalid response from an upstream server. | Inspect the upstream connection, DNS, routing, TLS, protocol, headers, and response format. |
| 504 Gateway Timeout | The intermediary did not receive a timely response from upstream. | Measure connect and read times, inspect slow dependencies, and compare timeout settings. |
| 503 Service Unavailable | The server is currently unable to handle the request, often temporarily. | Check service health, maintenance state, capacity, and deliberate overload protection. |
A 504 is therefore not simply a “slower 502”: the defining distinction is whether an unusable response arrived or no timely response arrived. A 503 is a different status with a different implication, even though all three can appear during an outage.
Quick Recap
A decision path for intermittent versus repeatable failures
- Repeat the request once. If it succeeds, record both timestamps and continue observing rather than changing several settings at once.
- Change only the network path. If another trusted network succeeds, investigate VPN, proxy, firewall, DNS, and routing on the original path.
- Change only the client. If another browser or device on the same network succeeds, compare profile, extension, and proxy settings.
- Keep the request constant for operator testing. Use the same hostname, path, method, headers, and protocol while checking gateway and origin logs.
- Escalate with evidence. Provide times, request IDs, affected endpoint, network comparison, and whether the result was 502, 504, or 503.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every 502 is an internet-service outage when a local VPN, proxy, firewall, or DNS setting can affect one person.
- Reinstalling a game, browser, or operating system before testing another network and checking the gateway path.
- Disabling security software permanently instead of performing a controlled, temporary comparison.
- Changing DNS, proxy, timeout, and application settings simultaneously, which removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
- Restarting every server without first preserving gateway and origin logs.
- Confusing a 504 timeout or 503 availability response with the invalid-upstream-response condition represented by 502.
