First check whether the black screen also appears in OBS preview. For a single video, use OBS Studio’s Media Source and enable Loop. For a sequence of files, use VLC Video, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. These settings repeat playback, but OBS’s documentation does not promise gapless transitions between files.
Choose the right OBS source
One file: Media Source
Add the video as a Media Source and enable its Loop option. This repeats that file when playback completes. Check the source’s Show nothing when playback ends setting: OBS says this hides the source after the file ends, which may contribute to a black image at the boundary.
Several files: VLC Video
For a sequence, add a VLC Video source, put the files in its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS defines this option as specifying whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear in OBS. OBS states: “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” OBS Media Sources documentation.
Find where the black screen enters
- Check OBS preview at the transition. If preview goes black too, inspect the playback source’s end behavior, visibility, and position in the scene.
- Check source order and visibility. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear above lower sources and can cover them. Confirm the video source’s eye icon is on and that an upper source is not obscuring it. OBS Sources Guide.
- Review VLC visibility behavior. Its Visibility Behaviour setting controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible in the OBS scene. “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” concerns scene visibility; it does not mean whether the OBS application window is on screen.
- If preview remains correct but the YouTube stream goes black, inspect the output path. Check OBS’s encoder/output status and log around the affected time. This preview-versus-stream split is a useful troubleshooting inference, not a documented diagnosis for every setup.
The cited OBS documentation does not establish a universal cause or guarantee a gapless handoff between playlist items. If the checks do not resolve it, note whether the gap is in preview or only YouTube, which source is in use, its loop and visibility settings, and what the OBS log reports. Investigate file-format differences or encoder overload only when the files or logs point to them; neither is established as the cause here.

Keep 4K/60 encoding settings separate from playlist settings
YouTube’s encoder recommendations affect the outgoing stream, not how OBS advances between playlist items. For 2160p at 60 fps, YouTube recommends these bitrates on its live encoder settings page:
| Codec | Recommended bitrate for 2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are encoding recommendations, not a fix or guarantee against black frames between local files. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
