Try Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B first. Windows will restart the graphics driver; the screen may flicker or beep. If the picture returns, save your work and restart the PC. This can recover a stalled driver, but it does not prove the underlying problem is fixed.
NVIDIA has replaced GeForce Experience with the NVIDIA App. It is the recommended companion app for current systems, while GeForce Experience is legacy terminology. NVIDIA urges remaining users to upgrade because legacy web services may be discontinued; the newer app retains features such as driver updates, recording, game optimization and the in-game overlay. See NVIDIA’s upgrade notice.
Identify which black screen you have
| Symptom | Start here |
|---|---|
| No manufacturer logo, BIOS/UEFI image or signal | Check monitor input, cable, GPU port and one-monitor operation. |
| Black after the Windows logo or sign-in | Use Safe Mode, driver rollback, clean boot or a clean driver installation. |
| Only the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience window is blank | Restart its processes, then repair, reset or reinstall the app. |
| Black screen appears when pressing Alt + Z | Disable NVIDIA and competing overlays and capture tools. |
| Only a GeForce NOW game is black | Use GeForce NOW-specific checks; this is separate from local NVIDIA software. |
A black screen alone does not establish that the GPU is dead. Microsoft lists stalled Windows processes, incorrect display output, incompatible drivers and incomplete updates among possible causes.
1. Check whether Windows is still responding
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, choose Task Manager.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly.
- Check whether Caps Lock or Num Lock changes, audio continues, the mouse pointer appears, or a previously configured remote-access session connects.
If Windows responds, focus on display output, the driver, the app or an overlay. If the whole computer is frozen, continue with the driver-reset shortcut, Safe Mode and recovery steps rather than repeatedly forcing power off.

2. Check the monitor, cable and output
- Confirm that the monitor is powered on and select the correct HDMI or DisplayPort input manually.
- Reseat the video cable at both ends.
- Try another cable, another GPU port and, if available, another monitor or television.
- Disconnect every display except one.
- If the CPU and motherboard support integrated graphics, test the motherboard output as a diagnostic.
NVIDIA recommends these checks in its black-screen guidance. If the monitor says “No signal” before Windows loads, do this before reinstalling software.
DisplayPort and high-refresh edge cases
With an older GeForce card, RTX 30-series system or high-resolution DisplayPort monitor, temporarily test HDMI, a standard refresh rate, one display and HDR disabled. A handshake, cable, monitor firmware or G-SYNC/FreeSync compatibility issue can resemble an app failure. Firmware tools apply only to supported hardware, so do not treat them as universal fixes.
3. Restart safely
Close the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience, save work and restart Windows from Start if possible. Avoid launching games, recording software, monitoring utilities or several overlays immediately afterward. NVIDIA lists rebooting as an initial response to many app and installer failures. Do not repeatedly interrupt a driver installation; one forced shutdown may be necessary only when the computer is completely unresponsive.
4. Fix a blank NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience window
Restart stuck processes
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- End the unresponsive NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience process.
- End only clearly identified NVIDIA user-interface or overlay processes that remain stuck.
- Reopen the app.
Do not indiscriminately terminate every NVIDIA service; display configuration, recording and laptop functions may depend on them.

Repair, reset or reinstall
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select NVIDIA App, open its advanced options when available and choose Repair.
- If Repair fails, try Reset, restart Windows and test again.
- If the window remains blank, uninstall and reinstall from NVIDIA’s official download page.
Windows menu labels vary by version and app release. App reset repairs app data; it does not repair a damaged display driver. For a legacy GeForce Experience installation, migrating to the NVIDIA App is preferable to spending excessive time repairing obsolete software.
5. Disable overlays when Alt + Z causes the black screen
Test one change at a time. Disable the NVIDIA Overlay, then Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, OBS hooks, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner overlays and other RGB, monitoring or tuning utilities that inject into games. If the game remains visible after Alt + Z is disabled, the display driver may be healthy and the conflict may be overlay- or game-specific. NVIDIA describes the current app’s overlay, recording, filters and performance statistics in its feature overview.
6. Clean-install the NVIDIA driver
Use this route when the black screen began after a driver update, games also lose output, the in-app installer repeatedly fails, Device Manager reports an adapter problem, or the picture returns only after the driver-reset shortcut.
- Download the matching driver from NVIDIA’s GeForce driver page or manual search. Select the exact GPU and Windows edition.
- Close browsers, games, video players, monitoring and GPU-tuning utilities and other 3D-accelerated programs.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Choose Custom (Advanced).
- Select Perform a clean installation.
- Finish the installation and restart Windows.
NVIDIA warns that background applications and Windows Update activity can interfere with installation. If it repeatedly fails, reboot, complete pending Windows updates and retry with other programs closed. A clean install can reset NVIDIA settings and profiles; it does not fix a bad cable, monitor, power supply or GPU.

Game Ready or Studio?
NVIDIA positions Game Ready Drivers for gamers and new-game launch support, and Studio Drivers for tested creative-application workflows. Both can support games; neither is universally more stable. If the issue began after changing branches, testing the previously working branch is reasonable.
7. Roll back after a specific update
- Open Device Manager with
devmgmt.msc. - Expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA GPU and choose Properties → Driver.
- Select Roll Back Driver if Windows retained a previous version.
- Restart.
If rollback is unavailable, use NVIDIA’s driver archive/search rather than a third-party mirror. An older driver may lack later fixes, security updates or support for a new game.
8. Use Safe Mode and a clean boot
Safe Mode is appropriate when the display works before Windows but turns black after login, a driver installation left the desktop unusable, or the generic display driver works. Follow Microsoft’s current Safe Mode instructions; the recovery path differs depending on whether Windows reaches sign-in.
From Safe Mode, roll back or uninstall the adapter in Device Manager, remove the NVIDIA App, disable recent startup utilities, use System Restore, then reinstall the correct driver after returning to normal mode.

Clean boot
- Run
msconfigto open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- On Startup, open Task Manager and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and re-enable services in groups to identify the conflict.
Never disable Microsoft services without first hiding them. services.msc is an advanced console for installer troubleshooting; do not disable services indiscriminately. NVIDIA documents this workflow in its black-screen support article.
9. Check Windows and hardware causes
- Note whether Windows Update, a BIOS change, GPU or monitor change preceded the failure.
- On laptops, use the manufacturer’s graphics package when NVIDIA’s generic driver causes hybrid-graphics or brightness problems.
- Check GPU power connectors, overheating and unstable overclocks.
- Temporarily test standard resolution, refresh rate and HDR-disabled output.
- Consider RAM, motherboard, power supply and storage faults as well as the GPU. NVIDIA’s broader graphics-card troubleshooting notes that apparent graphics failures can originate elsewhere.
Stop software troubleshooting and contact the relevant PC, GPU, laptop, motherboard or monitor manufacturer when there is no BIOS/UEFI image, multiple known-good displays and cables fail, artifacts or overheating appear, the system powers off under load, the card is not detected after a clean installation, or the problem persists in Safe Mode or another operating system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is GeForce Experience discontinued?
It is legacy software being replaced by the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA recommends upgrading, but availability can vary by system and region; use the current app for new installations.
Should I use DDU for every NVIDIA black-screen problem?
No. A driver cleaner is an advanced fallback, not a prerequisite. First isolate the display signal, app, overlay, Safe Mode and supported clean-install paths.
Will a clean driver installation delete my games?
No. It can reset NVIDIA graphics settings and profiles, but it does not normally remove installed games.
Does a black screen mean my GPU is dead?
No. Cable, monitor input, Windows output, drivers, overlays, power, memory and motherboard faults can produce the same symptom.
