Check the file’s location and scan it before deciding whether it is safe; the filename alone proves nothing. If the genuine process is stuck or using high CPU, close Riot Client and troubleshoot the installation rather than deleting the executable.
What is UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe?
It is a supporting executable that may be present in VALORANT’s Unreal Engine installation. A common location is C:Riot GamesVALORANTliveEngineBinariesWin64UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe, but the path changes if you installed the game in a different folder.
The name suggests a Chromium Embedded Framework-style subprocess, but Riot’s public documentation does not specify this executable’s exact duties. It may support an embedded interface, but assigning it a particular job—such as handling the store—is an inference, not a confirmed Riot specification.
It is distinct from the main game executables, the Riot Client, and Riot Vanguard. Riot describes Vanguard as a separate anti-cheat system with a client, driver, and platform; VALORANT does not run without Vanguard. Riot’s Vanguard overview explains that system separately.

How to check whether the file is legitimate
Use the running process to locate the actual file rather than relying on a path copied from another player. A file inside your active VALORANT installation is consistent with the game, but location by itself is not proof of safety.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select Details.
- Find
UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe, right-click it, and choose Open file location. - Check whether the folder belongs to the VALORANT installation you actually use. A copy in
%AppData%,%Temp%, Documents, or an unrelated folder deserves closer investigation. - In File Explorer, right-click the executable and choose Properties. Review the Digital Signatures and Details tabs. An absent or unexpected signature is a reason to investigate, not conclusive proof of malware.
- Right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender. If the path or scan result is suspicious, run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security. Microsoft documents these options in its guides to scanning an individual item and virus and threat protection.
If you find multiple copies, check each location and identify which one is tied to the active installation before removing anything. A duplicate filename alone does not establish that a copy is malicious; old installations and custom install locations can leave legitimate files behind.
Why it may stay open, appear more than once, or use high CPU
These symptoms call for different checks. One process while the game is open is not, by itself, cause for alarm. Multiple instances can occur, but Riot has not publicly documented the process-count behavior for this executable. A process that persists after everything Riot-related is closed, repeatedly reappears, or consumes substantial CPU deserves investigation.

High CPU is a symptom, not a malware verdict. It may accompany a stuck client or update, a blocked connection, a security scan, a third-party overlay, or file damage. Users have reported high CPU and multiple instances in community discussions, but those reports are anecdotal rather than an official diagnosis: one VALORANT Tech Support discussion.
Fixes to try, from least disruptive to more involved
1. Close Riot software cleanly and restart
- Close VALORANT.
- Right-click the Riot Client icon in the notification area and choose Exit, if available.
- If Riot or VALORANT processes remain, use Task Manager to end them only after normal exit fails.
- Restart Windows and test the game before changing firewall or antivirus settings.
If you only need to clear a hung process, ending it in Task Manager after closing VALORANT and Riot Client is a reasonable temporary step. It does not fix the cause if the process keeps hanging or returning.

2. Verify the file and check Windows Security
Follow the location, signature, and scan checks above. If Microsoft Defender or another security product detects the file, review the detection name and quarantine history before taking action. Do not whitelist an unverified copy. Microsoft recommends obtaining software from trusted sources and using Windows Security to check suspicious files.
3. Update Windows and relevant drivers
Install available Windows updates, restart, and use the PC or graphics-card manufacturer’s official channel for graphics-driver updates. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not have identical support timelines: Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. Consult Microsoft’s Windows security information for the support context.
Some Vanguard errors involve Windows patches, TPM, Secure Boot, VBS, HVCI, or firmware settings. Those requirements depend on the particular error, hardware, Windows version, and Riot policy; do not change these settings simply because this executable uses CPU. Follow the specific error message and Riot’s Vanguard update information or motherboard security guidance.

A firewall block can prevent network communication; antivirus or endpoint-security software may instead block execution or quarantine a file. Treat these as separate possibilities. If you have evidence that Windows Firewall is blocking VALORANT, allow the verified app through the firewall rather than turning the firewall off. Microsoft explains the supported approach in its firewall and network protection guide.
Examples of files that may be relevant include VALORANT.exe, VALORANT-Win64-Shipping.exe, UnrealCEFSubProcess.exe, RiotClientServices.exe, and vgc.exe. Common default locations are shown below, but your installation may be elsewhere. Browse to the actual files; do not enter these example paths blindly.

Riot-related troubleshooting material also lists the UnrealCEF subprocess among game files that may need firewall access; that establishes a possible legitimate use, not the safety of every same-named file. See the reported VALORANT troubleshooting example.
5. Test for interference from overlays and background utilities
Temporarily close nonessential Discord or GPU overlays, recording software, RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities, overclocking tools, VPNs, and aggressive network filters. If a third-party antivirus appears involved, first use its official game mode or a narrowly scoped exclusion for a verified file. Restore normal protection and remove any test exclusion that does not resolve the issue.

6. Use a clean boot to isolate startup conflicts
A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a recommended permanent setup. Microsoft notes that some functionality may be temporarily unavailable in this state. On Windows 10 or 11:
- Sign in as an administrator, search for
msconfig, and open System Configuration. - Open Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all and Apply.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup items, restart, and test VALORANT.
- After the test, restore services and startup items so the PC returns to its normal configuration.

7. Repair Windows system files
If the issue persists, open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowRestart after both commands finish. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source that System File Checker uses. See its System File Checker guidance.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Riot Vanguard and uninstall it.
- Restart if prompted, then launch Riot Client or VALORANT to reinstall Vanguard.
- Restart again if requested and test the game.
VALORANT requires Vanguard to run, so uninstalling Vanguard is a repair step only if you reinstall it. Riot’s Vanguard overview describes its role.
9. Repair or reinstall VALORANT from Riot
If the executable is missing, damaged, or still crashes after the previous checks, use a repair option in Riot Client if one is offered. Otherwise uninstall VALORANT and Riot Vanguard through Windows, restart, and install VALORANT using the official VALORANT site. Restart when prompted. Do not replace the executable with a download from a process or DLL website.

- Do not delete or rename the executable manually. That can leave a genuine installation incomplete and turn a repairable problem into a reinstall.
- Do not download a replacement executable from a third-party site. Use Riot’s installer or repair route.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows Firewall. Windows Firewall exists to reduce exposure; Microsoft recommends allowing a specific blocked app rather than turning protection off.
- Do not add broad exclusions or rules. Avoid whitelisting the whole drive or opening arbitrary inbound ports.
- Do not use registry cleaners or random DLL-repair utilities. They are not a routine fix for this process and can add risk.
When to contact Riot Support
Stop experimenting and contact Riot if the file is in the expected installation and scans clean but the game still crashes; if a clean boot and Vanguard reinstall do not help; if the PC blue-screens or restarts; or if the process repeatedly returns after reinstalling. A Riot Repair Tool may be used to collect logs; run it as administrator when Riot instructs you to. The support form and available workflow can vary by region, so use Riot’s current VALORANT support page.
Include the exact error or stop code, a screenshot of the process and file location, whether the issue started after a patch, and which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior. If the executable appears outside the game folder, include that location and the security product’s detection result rather than adding it to an allow list.
