Can you connect a Switch to a PS5 as a display?
No—not through the ordinary direct-HDMI setup described in the consoles’ connection instructions. The Switch dock’s HDMI OUT sends video to a TV or monitor, and the PS5’s HDMI OUT also sends video to a display; the PS5 is not an HDMI input for the Switch. Nintendo’s TV connection instructions and PlayStation’s PS5 setup instructions describe those output connections. Use a separate TV or monitor. The official setup guidance does not establish a capture card or adapter as a supported way to use a PS5 as a Switch display.

Fix a Switch that shows a black screen on the TV
1. Confirm the Switch model
Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV mode, so it cannot send video to a TV through a dock. For a standard Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, use a compatible Switch dock. For Switch 2, use Switch 2 accessories; its dock and power requirements differ from the earlier generation.
2. Check the console in handheld mode
Remove the console from the dock and check whether its own screen works. If the handheld screen is blank or the console will not power on, address that problem first; the TV connection cannot be diagnosed reliably until the console itself works.

3. Reset and check the dock’s power
- Unplug the power adapter from both the wall outlet and the dock for at least 30 seconds.
- Check the adapter and cable for visible damage.
- Reconnect the correct adapter directly to a wall outlet and to the dock.
The original Switch uses adapter model HAC-002; Switch 2 uses NGN-01. Nintendo says the original Switch adapter does not supply enough power for Switch 2 TV mode. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 blank-screen guidance and Switch blank-screen guidance for the model-specific steps.
4. Connect the dock directly to the display
- Connect the HDMI cable to the dock’s HDMI OUT port and directly to the TV or monitor.
- Turn on the display and select the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Temporarily remove a receiver, soundbar, splitter, or video adapter from the path.
- Make sure the console faces the right way and is fully seated in the dock.
Nintendo’s Switch TV connection steps show the intended dock-to-display setup. Bypassing other equipment helps establish whether it is interrupting the video signal.

5. Test the HDMI connection one component at a time
- Try another HDMI port on the same TV or monitor, and select that port as the input.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable.
- Connect the dock to a different TV or monitor.
Change one item at a time so you can identify whether the issue follows the display input, cable, or display itself. A standard known-good cable is a sensible test; a premium high-speed cable is not a general fix for Switch TV output.

6. Cross-test a compatible dock, then seek service if needed
If one is available, try a compatible dock and the correct power adapter. A working second dock points toward a problem with the original dock, but do not assume docks are interchangeable across Switch generations. If the console and compatible dock still produce no image after these checks, follow Nintendo’s service guidance in its Switch troubleshooting page or Switch 2 troubleshooting page.

If the PS5 itself has no picture
These checks are for a PS5 that is meant to display on a TV or monitor—not for showing Switch video on the PS5.
Check the direct connection and selected input
Connect the PS5’s HDMI OUT directly to the display’s HDMI input, turn on the display, and select the matching input. Temporarily bypass receivers, soundbars, and other video equipment to isolate the connection. PlayStation’s picture and sound troubleshooting covers console-to-display problems.

Check resolution and refresh-rate compatibility
If the picture fails only at a particular resolution or refresh rate, check that the display, HDMI port, and cable support the selected mode. For 4K at 120 Hz, PlayStation advises checking display capability and firmware, using an appropriate HDMI 2.1 port when available, and using the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for applicable high-bandwidth modes. Review PS5 resolution settings under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, and use the mode your display supports.

A solid white indicator means the PS5 is powered on. If it is on but no picture appears, PlayStation directs users to its picture troubleshooting. A blinking blue or white indicator can indicate a console error and follows a separate troubleshooting path; consult PlayStation’s power indicator light guide. If the display connection and supported output settings do not resolve the problem, use PlayStation Repairs.
