Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First, check whether everything records black or only one app or video. If ordinary screens record correctly but a streaming video or a particular game screen does not, the app or content may block capture. If even your home screen or settings page is black, check recorder permissions and software conflicts next.
Start by finding out what is black
Make a short test recording of an ordinary, non-protected screen, such as your home screen or a settings page. Then check the recording itself.
- Only one app or video is black: The app may restrict recording. Apple notes that some apps may not allow audio or video recording. A recorder setting cannot necessarily override that restriction.
- Ordinary screens are black too: Check the device’s screen-recording permission and the recorder’s configuration.
- The live preview looks right, but the saved file is black: Investigate file playback and codec compatibility rather than assuming the capture itself failed.
For a video or game with a black capture, compare it with an ordinary screen before changing multiple settings. If the content is restricted, use an authorized viewing or download option rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
Fixes for iPhone and iPad
- Open Control Centre and start Screen Recording.
- Record a normal screen, then find the result in Photos and check whether it plays.
- If screen mirroring is active, stop mirroring and test again. Apple says screen recording and screen mirroring cannot run at the same time.
- If ordinary screens record but one app’s video does not, the app may prohibit recording audio or video. The issue may not be a fault with your iPhone or iPad.
Apple’s guidance explains that some apps may not allow recording audio or video. Apple Support: Take a screen recording.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fixes for Mac
If a capture app records a blank screen, check whether macOS allows that app to record the screen.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Find the screen-recording app and enable its permission.
- Quit and reopen the capture app if it still cannot capture the screen, then make another short test recording.
- If only a particular app or video remains black, test ordinary content. The app or content may restrict capture.
Apple provides a per-app control for this access. Apple Support: Control access to screen and system audio recording on Mac.

Fixes for Android
- Use the device’s built-in screen recorder and make a short test of an ordinary screen.
- Check the resulting recording in your gallery or photos app.
- If Google’s general screen-recording instructions do not match your phone or do not resolve the issue, follow your manufacturer’s support instructions. Controls and behavior can differ by manufacturer.
- If only one app or video records black, check whether that app allows recording before changing other settings.
See Google’s Android screen-recording instructions.
Fixes for Windows and other desktop recorders
There is no single documented Windows setting path that applies to every recorder. Use the settings and support documentation for your particular capture app, and work through these checks when ordinary desktop content is also black.

Check screen-capture permissions
Confirm that the operating system and any relevant security or privacy controls allow the recorder to capture the screen. The exact route depends on your Windows version and recorder, so use that software’s documentation rather than relying on a universal menu path.
Test browser security and hardware acceleration
If the problem is limited to browser content or accelerated video, browser security or hardware acceleration may be involved. Change one setting at a time and make a short test. Restore the original setting if performance gets worse; disabling acceleration is not a universal fix.

Check for software conflicts and graphics-driver issues
Security software or graphics drivers can be relevant to desktop capture failures. Check your recorder vendor’s troubleshooting advice before changing security settings or updating drivers. TechSmith lists browser security, hardware acceleration, security-software conflicts, and graphics drivers as possible troubleshooting areas, not guaranteed causes or fixes. See TechSmith Support’s black-screen guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the recording preview is fine but playback is black
A correct live preview followed by a black exported file points to a different problem from a black capture preview. Try playing the file in another compatible player. If the issue persists, check whether the file’s codec is supported by the player or investigate codec compatibility. Bandicam lists missing or incompatible codecs as one possible reason for black recorded video; that does not establish a codec problem when the live capture itself is black. See Bandicam’s black-screen troubleshooting guidance.

Match the symptom to the next check
| What you see | First check | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Only one app or video is black | Test ordinary content and check whether the app permits recording. | An app or content restriction is possible; changing recorder settings may not help. |
| iPhone or iPad capture fails while mirroring | Stop screen mirroring and test a normal screen. | Apple says recording and mirroring cannot run simultaneously. |
| Mac capture app records blank content | Review that app’s Screen & System Audio Recording permission. | macOS has a per-app permission control. |
| Desktop browser content or capture is black | Check recorder permissions, browser security, hardware acceleration, software conflicts, and vendor guidance. | These are possible troubleshooting areas, not a universal diagnosis. |
| Preview is normal but the saved file plays black | Try another compatible player and check codec compatibility. | The issue may be playback or encoding rather than capture. |
