Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward this threshold, and reaching the number does not guarantee monetization: YouTube reviews the channel and checks other requirements. What the 4,000-hour requirement means
YouTube’s full YouTube Partner Program (YPP) route for Watch Page Ads and YouTube Premium revenue requires 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months. The window rolls: it is not a lifetime total. YouTube’s alternative route for this tier is 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. These are separate routes; Shorts Feed watch time does not add to the 4,000-hour total. YouTube Help’s YPP eligibility guidance lists these thresholds; the page was current when accessed in 2026 and does not state a publication date.
There is also an earlier YPP milestone in countries and regions where expanded YPP is available. It can provide access to some fan-funding and Shopping features, but it is not the same threshold as the full ad-revenue route.

Which watch time counts?
The 4,000-hour route counts qualified watch hours from public long-form videos. Visibility and format matter as much as the view total.
- Can count: eligible public long-form video watch time. Public livestream watch time may count when the stream is converted to a video on demand (VOD).
- Does not count: watch time from private, unlisted, or deleted videos; YouTube Shorts; ad campaigns; and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD.
Paid promotion is not a shortcut to the threshold: watch time from ad campaigns is excluded. If you stream, keep the replay public and ensure it is converted to a VOD. YouTube’s official progress display in Studio is the measure to follow, rather than a calculation from public view counts.

How to build qualifying watch time
No upload schedule, video length, or view target can guarantee 4,000 hours for every channel. Use your own audience data to decide what to make and improve the chance that viewers choose to stay.
1. Make public long-form videos for a defined audience
Choose subjects that meet a clear viewer need, then publish the long-form video publicly. Shorts can introduce people to your channel, but their Feed watch time will not move the 4,000-hour counter. Treat formats as serving different goals rather than assuming one replaces the other.

2. Check whether the opening delivers on the title and thumbnail
In YouTube Studio, open a video’s audience-retention report and inspect the first 30 seconds. It shows how many viewers remain after that point. If viewers leave early, compare the opening with the promise made by the title and thumbnail; YouTube recommends trying different intro styles. Avoid changing packaging just to raise clicks if the video then fails to hold the audience.
3. Read retention curves as clues
Retention reports can take 1–2 days to process. A flat stretch suggests viewers continued through that section; a decline marks a drop-off; a dip can indicate skipping or abandonment; and a spike may reflect rewatching, sharing, or a confusing moment viewers replayed. Check what happens at those points, then use the strongest moments and recurring viewer questions to shape follow-up videos. These patterns are diagnostic clues, not proof of a single cause. 4. Let audience behavior guide the next topic
Use YouTube Analytics to see what viewers watch, which formats they use, and how they find your channel. Those patterns can suggest a related video, a series, or a collaboration. Compare like with like: audience behavior differs across videos, livestreams, and Shorts. YouTube explains audience discovery and viewing patterns in its Analytics guidance and format-comparison guidance.
5. Use livestreams when they suit the audience, and preserve the replay
A public livestream can contribute eligible watch time if it is converted to a VOD; an unlisted or deleted stream, or one not converted to VOD, is excluded. After a stream, review total watch time, average view duration, retention, traffic sources, and concurrent viewers in Analytics. These measures help you judge whether the format and topic worked for your audience; they do not change the eligibility rules. 6. Compare your own trends, not a universal benchmark
YouTube says there is no single most important metric and no universal “good” click-through rate. Compare videos with similar topics and formats over time. A higher click-through rate alone does not show that viewers stayed to watch; read it alongside retention and watch time. YouTube’s impressions and click-through-rate guidance explains how to interpret those measures.

Watch hours are total time watched, so average view duration can help with rough planning. If your public long-form videos average 6 minutes watched per view, then 4,000 hours equals 240,000 minutes, or about 40,000 views at that average (4,000 × 60 ÷ 6). This is arithmetic for illustration, not a YouTube benchmark or forecast. Actual eligibility uses YouTube’s qualified watch-hour reporting, and average duration varies by video and audience.
Reaching the threshold is not automatic acceptance
After you meet the numerical threshold, YouTube reviews the channel against its monetization policies. Other requirements include YPP availability in your country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an AdSense for YouTube account that is linked or ready to create. Meeting the watch-hour number alone does not ensure approval. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s YPP eligibility requirements for your channel’s current status.
Keep a gaming livestream running without leaving your PC on
If public gaming livestreams fit your viewers, you can run a prerecorded gameplay recording or playlist as a YouTube live stream. Keep the replay public and converted to VOD if you want its eligible watch time to contribute. YouTube watch-hour eligibility still depends on qualified viewing and does not guarantee monetization.
