1. Test the Steam Overlay first
With the affected game running, press the controller’s Steam button. You can also press Shift+Tab on the keyboard. If the overlay appears, open the controller configuration from there and check whether the page is still blank.
Steam Support describes the overlay as “vital to Steam Controller functionality.” If the overlay does not appear, do not start by editing layouts: the configurator depends on the in-game Steam integration, so a missing overlay is a higher-priority fault.
Enable the overlay and retest
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Open Steam’s Settings and select the section labeled In Game in the current desktop client. Turn on the option that enables the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Close the game completely, launch it again through Steam, and press Shift+Tab.
- Open the controller configuration from the overlay and note whether it now renders normally.
Client labels can change between Steam releases. If your Settings page uses different wording, look for the Steam Overlay enablement control in the in-game settings rather than assuming a layout-editor option will repair it.

Record that result. It rules out a completely absent overlay, but it does not identify whether the remaining problem belongs to the game, the selected input style, the controller profile, or the Steam client. Continue with the scope tests below.
2. Isolate the scope before changing anything else
Run a controlled comparison instead of repeatedly reopening the same blank page.

Compare another game
- Leave the original game and its controller connected.
- Launch a second Steam game in which controller configuration has previously worked, if one is available.
- Open the overlay and its controller configuration.
- Write down whether the second game displays a layout.
If only one title produces the blank screen, treat that as a game-specific lead. If several titles do it, prioritize Steam’s overlay, client, controller, and software-conflict checks.
Compare another controller
- Close the game.
- Connect a second supported controller, using the same connection type where possible.
- Start the same game and open the configurator from the overlay.
- Compare the result with the original device.
A different result with another controller is useful evidence, not proof of a defective device. Keep the model, connection method, operating system, and Steam branch in your notes so a later report is reproducible.
Capture the exact context
For every test, record the game, controller model, operating system, Steam client version or Beta status, whether the game was launched through Steam or another service, and how you opened the configurator. Community reports show that the symptom can vary by game and controller, so these details are more informative than a statement that Steam is “broken.”
3. Check whether the game supports the selected input style
Steam warns that some input styles work only when the game supports them. For example, commands intended to behave as gamepad inputs require gamepad support in the game. A layout that is valid for one title or control scheme may not be usable in another.
Check the selected layout without assuming it is the cure
If any part of the configurator is usable, select a layout appropriate to the game’s actual controls. A standard gamepad template is a useful comparison for a title that advertises gamepad support; a keyboard-and-mouse style is a different input path. You can also compare a community configuration with the game’s default template when those choices are presented.

This is a compatibility test, not a promise that changing templates will make a blank interface render. If every layout area is empty, return to the overlay and scope checks rather than repeatedly cycling through templates.

Note whether the blank screen occurs only after enabling Steam Input, only in a particular game mode, or only when the game is started from an external launcher. A title-specific pattern should be reported as such; it should not be generalized into a universal Steam fix.
4. Rule out conflicting programs and overlay layers
Steam Support states that “Some third-party programs have been found to conflict with Steam Controller functionality.” Its examples include Razer Synapse, XInput emulators, screen-capture software, Skype or Skypehost, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm. The list is general controller guidance, not a confirmed explanation for every blank configurator.
Use a one-change-at-a-time test
- Close the game and Steam.
- Temporarily exit one suspected utility from its notification-area menu or task manager. Do not uninstall it for this test.
- Restart Steam, launch the same game, and check the overlay and configurator.
- Restore the utility if nothing changes, then test the next candidate separately.
Changing several utilities at once can hide the cause and make it impossible to know what helped. If a utility is required for accessibility, recording, security, or another device, schedule the test so that disabling it does not leave the computer unprotected or unusable.
Check external launcher overlays
When a game starts through another service, that service may place its own overlay over the game. Steam recommends trying the game with the external launcher’s overlay disabled. Apply that change only to the affected launcher, restart the game, and test again. If the configurator works only with the other overlay disabled, report the interaction rather than claiming that the launcher is always incompatible.

Restart after conflict changes
Steam’s controller guidance includes restarting the computer after addressing potentially conflicting programs. A full restart clears utilities that remain resident after a normal application close and gives you a consistent baseline for the next test.
5. Try Steam’s broader controller troubleshooting options
Steam’s general controller troubleshooting page lists several additional options. They are reasonable diagnostic branches, but the page does not state that any one of them specifically cures a blank Controller Configurator.
Run Steam in Big Picture Mode
Open Big Picture Mode from the Steam client and navigate to the affected game and controller settings there. Compare whether the same configuration page is blank. A difference between desktop and Big Picture presentation is useful evidence about the interface path; it is not proof that Big Picture is a permanent workaround.
Opt into the current Steam Beta
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends opting into the most up-to-date Steam Beta as a general check. Before switching, note your current branch. After Steam updates and restarts, reproduce the same steps with the same game and controller. If the blank screen disappears, record the exact client branch and date; Beta behavior can change, and the result does not establish that every user should remain on Beta.

Steam also lists running the client as administrator among its broader troubleshooting steps. Close Steam, start it with administrator privileges using your operating system’s normal option, and retest the same game. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison. Elevated privileges can affect how programs interact, but they should not be used as a reason to grant unnecessary access permanently.

Restart Steam after each branch
For Big Picture, Beta, and administrator tests, fully exit Steam before restarting it. Reopen the same game and use the same controller button or Shift+Tab path so the comparison remains meaningful.

Once you have tried the relevant branches, perform one controlled retest instead of mixing settings together.
- Restart the computer.
- Connect only the controller being tested, unless another device is required for the game.
- Close or disable one previously identified conflicting utility for the duration of the test.
- Start Steam in the selected branch, stable or Beta, and note that branch.
- Launch the game through the same path used when the problem occurred.
- Press the controller’s Steam button or Shift+Tab and verify that the overlay opens.
- Open the controller configuration, wait for the page to finish loading, and record whether it is blank, partially rendered, or usable.
Do not change the controller, game, branch, launcher, and overlay settings simultaneously. A clean retest is valuable because it tells you which combination was actually tested.
7. What not to treat as a confirmed fix
Community discussions can reveal that other users see the same symptom, including reports from December 2024 and later search results, but they do not verify a lasting workaround. A suggestion posted for one game or device may not apply to yours.
- Do not present a forum comment as an official Steam diagnosis.
- Do not delete configuration files solely because a post says doing so helped someone else. The available evidence does not establish file deletion as a safe, universal remedy, and it can remove customized layouts.
- Do not assume a Steam update fixed the issue without checking the affected client build and reproducing the result.
- Do not infer that a controller is physically defective from a blank page that occurs only in one title.
- Do not describe Beta, Big Picture, administrator mode, or a template change as guaranteed solutions; Steam lists them as broader troubleshooting options.

- The exact game and, if relevant, its mode or edition.

- Steam client version and whether the client is on the stable branch or Beta.
- Whether the game was launched directly through Steam or through another launcher.
- How the configurator was opened: controller Steam button, Shift+Tab, Big Picture, or another path.
- Whether the Steam Overlay opened.
- Whether another game or controller produced the same result.
- Which conflicting-program tests, restart, Big Picture, Beta, or administrator checks you performed and what changed.
- The exact reproduction sequence from launching the game to seeing the blank page.
That report is more useful than saying only that Steam Input is broken. It preserves the comparisons that distinguish a game-specific report from a client-wide one.
