How to Fix a Bricked PS5: Safe Mode, USB Update, and Repair Options

A PS5 that will not start may still recover through Safe Mode. Follow Sony’s steps from connection checks to USB update, and understand the data-loss risk before reinstalling.

If your PS5 will not start after an update, first check its power and HDMI connections, then try Safe Mode. If the console can reach Safe Mode, begin with options that preserve data; reinstalling system software is a last resort because it deletes everything stored on the console. If Safe Mode is unavailable or recovery fails, use PlayStation Repairs.

What “bricked” means for a PS5

“Bricked” is a common description, not a diagnosis: a console that will not start may have a connection or power issue, a software problem, or another fault. The useful first question is what the PS5 can still do: power on, show an image, or enter Safe Mode. Sony’s recovery steps depend on those symptoms, and none can guarantee that every console will recover.

1. Check power, HDMI, and cables

If Safe Mode does not appear, Sony recommends checking the USB, HDMI, and power connections. Confirm that the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends. If you have spare cables, try replacing one cable at a time so you can identify a connection problem rather than changing several things at once.

You can also power the console off, unplug it for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again, as Sony advises. If the console still will not start normally, attempt Safe Mode.

  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

2. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode

  1. Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button until the console shuts down.
  2. Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; Sony says the second beep sounds seven seconds after the first.
  3. Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.

Safe Mode starts the console with basic functions and provides access to troubleshooting options. If you cannot get to its menu after checking the connections and retrying, go to Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting guidance.

3. Try Safe Mode options that preserve data

Read the description of each option before selecting it. Sony says Repair Console Storage does not erase data and may help when the PS5 will not start properly or has a storage issue. Update System Software is another available option. Sony also says Restore Default Settings does not delete content in console storage.

These choices have different effects; do not treat them as interchangeable. For the available options and their descriptions, see PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide.

4. Update system software from a USB drive

If the console can enter Safe Mode but an update through the menu does not work, Sony supports updating system software from a USB drive. You will need a controller and USB cable, a PC or Mac connected to the internet, and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Use Sony’s official download and naming instructions rather than an update file from another source.

  1. On the USB drive, create a folder named PS5, then create a folder named UPDATE inside it.
  2. Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s PS5 system software page and save it in the UPDATE folder as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony specifies uppercase letters for the folder and file names.
  3. Connect the USB drive to the PS5 and start Safe Mode using the steps above.
  4. Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device, and follow the on-screen instructions.

If the PS5 does not recognize the update file, check the drive format, folder names, and filename, including capitalization. Sony’s full procedure and file are on its system software update page.

5. Reinstall system software only as a last resort

Reinstalling is not the same as updating. Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the PS5 console. If you can still access your console data, back up what you need before proceeding. This step is appropriate only after less destructive recovery attempts have failed and you understand the data loss.
