After that, branch according to the exact symptom—an immediate crash, a failure during the splash screen, a crash during play, “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable),” or “This game is currently unavailable.”
There is no single fix for every card-based RPG. Steam Support (Valve) says, “Games may not launch for a number of reasons, most of which are hard to diagnose due to the number of unique hardware and software configurations users have.” The game’s own operating-system support, minimum requirements, and known issues therefore matter as much as the Steam client.

Before changing settings, note the point at which the game stops. The same title can have different causes for a shortcut that does nothing, a crash at the publisher logo, and a crash after several minutes of play.

Write down the game’s exact name and the operating system before troubleshooting. A card-based RPG is not automatically supported on every platform, and a computer close to a game’s minimum specification can still experience launch or performance problems.
Prepare a useful baseline
Record whether the game ever worked on this computer. Also note anything that changed immediately before the failure: an operating-system update, graphics-driver update, game patch, new security software, or hardware change. This is not a diagnosis by itself, but it gives support a timeline and helps distinguish a persistent compatibility problem from a newly introduced conflict.
Keep the exact wording of every Steam or in-game message. “The game crashes” is much less actionable than the full text of an unavailable-game or missing-executable error. If a dialog appears, take an uncropped screenshot so the title bar, buttons, and surrounding details remain visible.
Run the safe first-line fixes
1. Restart the computer and Steam
- Exit the game and quit Steam completely rather than leaving only the Library window open.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Steam again and try the game once.
Steam’s own file-verification instructions begin with a computer restart and a fresh Steam launch. This clears a stalled client process and makes the later checks meaningful. If the game launches after the restart, still note what happened; a recurrence after the next reboot is useful information for support.
2. Install operating-system and driver updates
Apply pending updates for the operating system you actually use:
- Windows: install available Windows updates and update the computer’s device drivers, including the graphics driver.
- Linux: update the distribution and graphics drivers. Also confirm that the game or its downloadable content is available for Linux.
- macOS: install available macOS updates and check the game’s store-page platform support before treating the failure as a broken installation.
Restart after updates when the operating system requests it, then test the game before making additional changes. Do not assume that an update intended for one operating system applies to another. A driver update can change behavior, so record its version if the crash begins immediately afterward.
3. Verify the game’s installation
Steam’s built-in verifier checks for missing or damaged game content. It can address launch failures and crashes, and Steam warns that the process may take several minutes.

- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the RPG’s entry, or open its Library page and select the gear menu.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then launch the game from Steam.
Verify one game at a time and avoid running the check while another system-intensive task is using the computer. If Steam reports that one or more files failed verification, that is not automatically a new fault: Steam says many games keep local configuration files that are expected not to be replaced. Test the game after verification instead of repeatedly starting the process.
A successful verification does not prove that the computer meets the title’s requirements or that another application is not interfering. It only tells you that Steam found no further discrepancy it could repair in the installed content.
Rule out software interference without weakening security
Steam recommends temporarily disabling non-essential software that may interfere with the client or game. Treat this as a controlled diagnostic test, not a permanent configuration.
- Close non-essential overlays, recording tools, tuning utilities, and other background applications that are not required to operate the computer.
- Try launching the RPG once.
- If the game works, restore the software and settings one at a time to identify the conflict.
- If there is no change, restore anything you closed before moving to the next branch.
Do not broadly disable security protections as a first step. A security product that quarantines the game executable is a different, error-specific case; follow the missing-executable procedure below and make the narrowest change possible. Restore any temporary diagnostic setting when the test is complete.
Confirm the game’s platform support and requirements
Open the specific title’s Steam store page and compare its stated operating-system support and system requirements with the computer. Check the game itself rather than assuming that another card-based RPG’s compatibility tells you anything about this one.
- Confirm that your operating system is listed as supported.
- Compare the required processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage, and other entries with the computer’s actual specification.
- Check whether the game or a required piece of downloadable content is offered for your platform.
- Remember that meeting only the minimum requirement does not guarantee a successful launch or stable play; Steam cautions that systems at or near minimum specifications may still have launch or performance problems.
If the title does not list your operating system, stop treating file verification as a complete solution. Look for the developer’s platform guidance instead. On Linux, a Windows-only game may be attempted through Steam Play or Proton, but compatibility is title-specific rather than guaranteed by Steam.
Fix “Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This exact message commonly means that antivirus software quarantined the executable Steam is trying to start. The message does not prove that quarantine is the cause, so check the security product’s records.

- Open the antivirus or endpoint-security application’s quarantine, history, or detection page.
- Look for an entry naming the game or its executable and note the action taken.
- Follow that product’s recovery process only if you recognize the file as belonging to the game you installed and the security product permits restoration.
- If the product supports exclusions, use a narrow exclusion for the affected game folder only after checking its quarantine record. Avoid excluding an entire drive or weakening protection globally.
- Restart Steam and run Verify integrity of game files using the path in the previous section.
- Launch the game again.
If the executable is not in quarantine or the message remains, contact Steam Support. Include an uncropped screenshot of the complete error and Steam’s System Report so support can see the relevant client and hardware information. Do not download a replacement executable from an unrelated website; use Steam’s installation and the security product’s documented recovery process.
Fix “This game is currently unavailable”
Steam lists a separate set of checks for this exact message. Keep them tied to that message; they are not a universal replacement for the general sequence.
- Restart Steam and the computer.
- Update the computer’s device drivers, including graphics drivers where applicable.
- Verify the game files through Library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Check whether files in the Steam installation folder have been set to read-only. Remove an unintended read-only setting, then retry the launch.
- If this is a third-party game, open its installation folder and run the game’s executable directly once. A direct launch can reveal a second error that the Steam client did not display.
Use the direct executable only as a diagnostic step. Return to Steam for normal launching, updates, and file management. When the RPG crashes after it starts

If the failure is repeatable at one menu or transition, describe that location precisely. If it is intermittent, state how often it occurs without inventing a percentage or success rate. Both patterns can be useful to the developer, but neither alone identifies the cause.
Linux and Steam Play (Proton) checks
Steam advises Linux players to confirm that the game and any required downloadable content are available for Linux. If the title lacks native Linux support and you are using Steam Play or Proton, consult the game-specific Steam Play community discussions for reports and suggestions about that title.

Do not treat a report for a different RPG as proof that your installation will work. Record the Linux distribution, graphics-driver version, Proton choice, exact error, and point of failure when asking the developer or community for help. If the game has no Linux support and no workable Steam Play guidance, the developer is the appropriate source for a definitive compatibility answer.
A Linux compatibility report should also say whether the problem occurs before the game window, during a loading screen, or only after play begins. This separates a platform-support question from a title-specific crash and avoids mixing native Linux behavior with Steam Play behavior.

- The exact game title and, if relevant, the edition or downloadable content involved.
