First identify where buffering happens: in the broadcaster’s Castr preview or input-health data, on YouTube for every viewer, or only for some viewers, devices, or networks. Those symptoms point to different fixes. There is no evidence here that India as a whole, a particular Indian ISP, or a specific Castr–YouTube route is responsible.
Start by locating the buffering
Ask the broadcaster to check the Castr preview and input-health charts while affected viewers check YouTube playback. A collapsing source bitrate or dropped frames points toward the encoder or its connection; a stable source with buffering limited to some viewers points toward viewer-side playback or connectivity. This is a diagnostic distinction, not a diagnosis of your specific stream.

If you are broadcasting through Castr
Check encoder settings and upload headroom
Castr’s 2026 troubleshooting guidance recommends H.264/AVC video, AAC audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and 30 fps as a baseline. It gives 128 Kbps stereo audio as a recommendation and suggests 60 fps only when the connection can sustain the higher bitrate. Use the settings required by your chosen platform and stream configuration; YouTube’s own recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate.
Castr’s guide gives 3,500–6,500 Kbps for 1080p and 2,500–4,000 Kbps for 720p. It recommends sustained upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate: for example, a 5,000 Kbps stream calls for 7,500 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) upload. These are Castr recommendations, not measurements of Indian providers. A speed-test peak alone does not establish that the connection can hold that upload steadily.

- If the connection cannot sustain the target, lower resolution or bitrate rather than asking it to maintain an unstable setting.
- Pause downloads, cloud sync, video calls, and other bandwidth-heavy traffic during a controlled test.
- Check encoder load as well as network performance if dropped frames continue after reducing bitrate.
Isolate the local connection
If the encoder computer is on Wi-Fi, test over Ethernet if practical. Castr notes that Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes. Treat a wired test as a way to isolate the connection, not a guaranteed fix. Compare results with competing traffic paused and, if practical, over a different network.
Read Castr’s health charts and test ingest options
Watch video bitrate and frame rate during the problem. Castr says sudden video-bitrate drops point to connection trouble, while dropped frames can mean the encoder or connection is struggling. Try the closest available ingest server to the broadcaster’s physical location. If RTMP is unstable on a long-distance or unreliable connection, Castr suggests trying SRT; neither protocol nor a closer server guarantees a cure.

If the source is stable but YouTube viewers buffer
Offer adaptive quality or reduce the source
Castr recommends enabling Adaptive Bitrate (ABR), which provides multiple quality levels, or lowering the source quality or bitrate. Its troubleshooting article gives 720p at 3,000 Kbps as one option for broader reach. Castr’s setup guide lists selectable renditions including 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, and 240p. ABR must be configured before going live: Castr says the setting cannot be changed while the stream is live, so disable the stream before changing it.
Keep Castr and YouTube recommendations separate
YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists recommended ingest bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, it lists 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30 as minimums, with recommended values of 14 Mbps and 8 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube ingest settings, not viewer download-speed thresholds; consult the current YouTube table for the selected codec and frame rate rather than combining its figures with Castr’s general recommendations. YouTube also specifies CBR and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

If you are watching the stream
Compare playback on another supported device or browser and, if possible, a separate network. Change playback quality to see whether a lower rendition plays without buffering. This helps distinguish a viewer-specific issue from a stream-wide problem; it does not establish that a particular Indian ISP or region is at fault.
Castr’s October 2025 requirements document recommends minimum download speeds for Castr playback: 500 Kbps for 240p, 1 Mbps for 360p, 3 Mbps for 720p, 7 Mbps for 1080p, 12 Mbps for 1440p, and 22 Mbps for 4K and above. These are Castr recommendations, not YouTube-specific guarantees. That document lists Android 8.0+ and iOS 16+ mobile support and recommends using the latest browser version.

Work through the checks in order
- Locate the symptom: compare Castr preview/input health with YouTube playback, and ask whether the issue affects everyone or only certain viewers.
- For broadcaster-side trouble, check the encoder: confirm appropriate resolution and bitrate, CBR, H.264/AAC where applicable, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Reduce the target if sustained upload headroom is insufficient.
- Isolate the network: pause competing traffic, test Ethernet if the encoder uses Wi-Fi, and compare another network when practical.
- Inspect Castr health and ingest: note bitrate and frame-rate changes; test the closest available ingest region and consider SRT if RTMP is unstable on an unreliable or long-distance link.
- For viewer-side buffering: compare devices, browsers, and networks. If the source is stable, configure ABR before the next stream or lower the source quality.
- Check YouTube stream health: run an upload-speed test, test beforehand with representative audio and motion, and monitor stream-health messages during the broadcast.
When to contact support
If the checks do not isolate the cause, contact Castr support or the broadcaster’s ISP with useful diagnostic details rather than a general report that the stream buffers. Record the time of the issue, broad location, encoder settings, connection type, bitrate and dropped-frame symptoms, and what happened on an alternate network. The available service guidance does not establish an India-wide outage or identify a particular Indian ISP as the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does switching to Ethernet guarantee that the buffering will stop?
No. It is a useful controlled test when the encoder is on Wi-Fi, but it cannot fix every source of instability.
Can I turn on Castr ABR while the stream is live?
No. Castr’s setup guidance says to disable the stream before changing that setting.
