The fix is usually simple: start the dedicated server with an explicit, readable configuration file. From the folder that contains the server files, run DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=serverprofile. Then confirm the file is really named serverDZ.cfg, that the launch method uses the same working directory, and that the newest log does not report a path or syntax error.

What “Server config not found” means
DayZ does not automatically discover every configuration file on the computer. The executable needs a configuration argument, and it must be able to resolve and read the file named by that argument. When startup displays Server config not found!, the usual problem is not that the server installation is broken; it is that the launch command omitted -config, points to the wrong location, or names a file the process cannot read.

Relative paths are resolved from the server’s working directory, not necessarily from the folder you happen to be viewing. A second class of failure occurs after the path is corrected: the file is found, but malformed settings prevent it from being parsed. Treat path and permission errors separately from configuration-content errors.
Use a known-good launch command first
Run one controlled test from the directory that contains both DayZServer_x64.exe and serverDZ.cfg:

DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=serverprofile-config=serverDZ.cfgtells the executable which configuration file to load.-port=2302sets the game-server port in this example; it does not locate the configuration file.-profiles=serverprofilegives logs and generated profile data a predictable, writable directory.
The relative -config value works only when the process starts in the directory where serverDZ.cfg resides. If your file is elsewhere, use its actual path in the argument. For a path containing spaces, quote it, for example -config="D:/DayZ Server/serverDZ.cfg". Keep the executable, configuration file, and profile directory on a location the account running the server can read and write.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Stop the failed instance before testing again
Close the server window or stop the service, panel task, or wrapper that launched it. A second copy can keep an old command line running while you edit a shortcut or batch file, making a correct change appear ineffective. In Task Manager, end any remaining DayZServer_x64.exe process before the controlled test. Start only one instance until the configuration loads successfully.

Open File Explorer’s View settings and enable File name extensions. The name must be exactly serverDZ.cfg, including the capital letters and the .cfg extension. Common accidental names include serverDZ.cfg.txt, serverDZ, or a second copy such as serverDZ (1).cfg. Rename the file rather than relying on an editor’s “Save as type” choice, and check that you are editing the copy used by the server rather than a template in another folder.
If you created the file with a text editor, save it as plain text. Rich-text formatting, a hidden extension, or an unexpected character at the beginning of the file can create a parsing failure even after the path is correct.

3. Establish the server’s working directory
With -config=serverDZ.cfg, the server resolves the name relative to its current working directory. That directory can differ depending on how the executable is started:
- A command prompt uses the directory shown before the prompt, such as
D:/DayZServer>. - A Windows shortcut has a Start in field. Set it to the folder containing the server files, not just the folder containing the shortcut.
- A batch file inherits the directory from which it is called unless the script changes directory first.
- A service, scheduler, or hosting panel may choose its own working directory; inspect that tool’s launch and working-directory fields.
For a direct test, open Command Prompt, change to the server folder, and launch the executable there. A forward-slash path is shown below to keep the example readable:

DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=serverprofileIf this works but your normal shortcut or panel still fails, the file is probably fine and the alternate launch method is losing the argument or starting in a different directory.
4. Put -config on the launch path that actually starts DayZ
Adding an argument to a shortcut does nothing if a panel, script, or service starts a separate executable. Find the real launch entry point and inspect its complete command line. The argument must be attached to that process, not merely written in a note or added to an unused shortcut.

- Shortcut: open Properties, append
-config=serverDZ.cfgto Target, and set Start in to the server directory. - Batch file: place the argument on the same line as
DayZServer_x64.exe; do not put it on a line that never executes. - Service or scheduler: edit the service’s executable arguments and working directory, then restart the service after saving.
- Managed panel: use the panel’s startup-parameters field. Some panels replace the entire command, so preserve required existing parameters while adding
-config=....
A Steam Community discussion about this exact message gives the concise diagnosis: “Make sure you launch server with -config= parameter.” Launching the executable by itself is therefore not an adequate test.
5. Give profiles a clear, writable location
Add -profiles=serverprofile or another directory that the server account can create and write to. The profile path is separate from the configuration-file path, but it makes troubleshooting much easier by collecting the latest logs and generated profile data in one known place. If you use a relative profile path, it is also interpreted from the working directory; use an absolute path when your service or panel starts in an uncertain location.
A permissions problem in the profile directory can produce secondary warnings that obscure the original failure. Create the directory in advance, verify that the account running DayZ has write permission, and avoid protected locations where Windows blocks application writes.
6. Read the newest log, not an old startup attempt
After each test, open the most recent log in the profile directory. The DayZ debugging guidance treats the latest log as the primary trace. Compare its timestamp with the failed launch and search for the first warning or error, rather than jumping to the final shutdown line.

- Path, “cannot open,” or “not found” wording: check the spelling, extension, working directory, and read permissions.
- Parse, syntax, or invalid-value wording: the file was located, so inspect its contents and formatting.
- Profile or access-denied wording: fix the profile directory’s location or permissions, then retest.
- No new log at all: you may be starting a different executable, using a different profile path, or being blocked before normal initialization.
Keep the old log until the new attempt is complete. Renaming logs with the attempt time makes it easier to prove which command produced which message.
7. Validate configuration contents after the path works
Once the log indicates that the file was opened, a remaining startup failure is usually a content problem rather than a missing-file problem. Check for unmatched braces, missing semicolons, stray quotation marks, truncated lines, and values copied from a different DayZ version or server setup. Do not add random parameters to “make it load”; remove the last change and retest if you are unsure which line is responsible.
Use a plain-text editor with visible line endings and a clear encoding option. Keep a backup of the last known-good file, then change one setting at a time. A configuration can be present and readable yet unusable when its syntax is malformed, so the absence of a “not found” message does not by itself prove that every setting is valid.
8. Retest with one simple command
After correcting a path, launch argument, permission, or syntax issue, return to the controlled command from the server directory. Do not simultaneously change the port, mods, service wrapper, and configuration contents. A single-variable retest tells you whether the fix addressed file discovery or introduced a new problem.

- Stop every existing DayZ server process.
- Open a command prompt in the directory containing the executable and configuration file.
- Run the explicit
-config,-port, and-profilescommand. - Wait for initialization to finish, then open the newest profile log.
- Only after the server loads the configuration should you return to the shortcut, service, panel, mods, or other automation.
Diagnose the common failure patterns

Choosing a launch setup after the repair
The configuration fix is the same conceptually, but the amount of control differs by setup. Choose based on how much access you need to the file system and command line.

Managed hosting features, availability, and pricing vary by provider and are not established by the error itself. Before moving a server, verify that the panel exposes a startup-parameter field, lets you upload or edit serverDZ.cfg, shows current logs, and permits a writable profile location. A hidden or automatically generated command can recreate the same error if it drops -config.
Keep the configuration reliable
Use one canonical server directory
Maintain a clearly named directory containing the executable, the active serverDZ.cfg, and the profile folder used by the launch command. Multiple copies are a frequent source of confusion: you edit one file while the service loads another. Record the full path in the shortcut or script and avoid moving only the configuration file without updating the argument.
Back up before editing
Copy the working configuration before changing it. When a new setting causes a parse error, restore the backup, confirm that the server starts, and then reapply changes individually. This is faster and safer than rewriting an entire file while troubleshooting.
Keep launch parameters visible
Put the complete command in one documented batch file or service definition. Include the configuration and profile arguments explicitly instead of depending on an editor, panel default, or remembered working directory. When another administrator takes over, the command itself should show where the server expects its configuration and logs.
Separate file-discovery tests from gameplay changes
Do not troubleshoot a missing configuration file while also changing ports, mods, permissions, or content packs. First prove that the executable can load the configuration with the minimal command. Then add your normal launch options one at a time and check the newest log after each change.
A concise recovery checklist
- Stop all running DayZ server processes.
- Enable file-name extensions and verify the exact name
serverDZ.cfg. - Confirm the file is in the directory used by the process, or replace the relative name with the correct path.
- Attach
-config=...to the shortcut, batch file, service, scheduler, or hosting-panel command that actually launches DayZ. - Set a writable
-profilesdirectory so the newest logs are easy to locate. - Run one controlled command from a known directory.
- Read the newest log and classify the first error as path, permission, or syntax related.
- Fix one variable, then repeat the controlled test before restoring automation.
When the message is finally gone but startup still fails
A missing-file message and a server that cannot complete initialization are different problems. If the log proves that serverDZ.cfg was opened, stop treating the issue as a path problem. Work through the first parse or invalid-value error, restore a known-good backup if necessary, and verify that the profile directory remains writable. Only after the dedicated server starts cleanly should you investigate network reachability, firewall rules, ports, mods, or client connection errors; those checks cannot make an undiscoverable configuration file appear.
