The message “DirectX encountered an unrecoverable error” is a broad crash symptom, not proof that DirectX is missing. It can come from a graphics driver, game files or shaders, unsupported hardware, system instability, or a game-specific bug. Start by checking whether one game or several are affected, then work through the fixes below in order—testing after each major change.
Before changing anything, identify the pattern
Write down the game and edition, the exact error wording and any code (for example, 0x887A0005), when the crash occurs, your Windows version, and your GPU and driver version. Note whether it began after a Windows, game, or driver update, and whether other games also fail. That pattern helps narrow the cause:
- One game only: start with that game’s files, settings, shaders, mods, launcher, and known issues.
- Several games: investigate the GPU driver, temperatures, overclocking, Windows files, and hardware stability.
- Older games only: check compatibility and whether the title needs legacy DirectX components.
- Crash after several minutes: check temperatures, tuning, VRAM use, and monitoring or overlay software.
Restart Windows before testing. If you use mods or custom DLLs, temporarily remove them using the game’s instructions and keep a note of what you changed.
Check DirectX and your graphics driver with dxdiag
- Press Windows key + R, enter
dxdiag.exe, and press Enter. - On the System tab, note the DirectX version.
- Open each Display tab and record the GPU name, driver provider, date and version, display-memory information, and any text under Notes.
- Select Save All Information… if you need to send a diagnostic report to the game’s support team.
Microsoft describes dxdiag as a way to inspect DirectX and save diagnostic information. A PC with more than one display adapter may show multiple Display tabs. If the device is listed as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using a generic driver; install the appropriate manufacturer driver instead. See Microsoft’s guidance on Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

A DirectX 12 entry does not establish that your GPU supports the game’s required feature level, shader model, or VRAM, nor that its driver or the game’s renderer is working correctly.
Update Windows and install the correct GPU driver
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.
- Test the game before making several other changes at once.
This is a sensible baseline, not a guaranteed fix. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft says Windows Update supplies the latest DirectX version available for that Windows version. You do not normally need a separate DirectX 12 installer. Check Microsoft’s dxdiag and DirectX guidance.
Update or reinstall the graphics driver
- Identify the exact GPU model in dxdiag or Device Manager.
- Download the driver for that GPU and your Windows edition from its manufacturer’s official site: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Laptop owners should also check the laptop maker’s support page for model-specific drivers.
- Prefer a stable production or recommended release unless the game publisher specifically advises otherwise. If the installer offers a clean-install option, you can use it.
- Restart, leave the game’s graphics settings at defaults for the first test, and check whether the crash returns.
A reinstall is especially worth trying if the problem began after a driver update, the installation was interrupted, Windows switched to the generic display driver, or multiple games are crashing. If the game worked before a particular driver update and the timing strongly points to a regression, consider a supported rollback; record the current version and obtain an older driver only from the GPU maker’s official archive. NVIDIA explains its current, beta, and archived driver options. The newest driver is not automatically the best choice for every game.
Avoid generic driver-updater utilities. They are not required to install official drivers and may select an unsuitable package.

For a one-game crash, repair the game before Windows
Verify the installation
For Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Steam’s interface and wording can change; the documented route appears in its announcement on file verification.
In Epic Games Launcher, open the game’s menu, select Manage, then Verify. In the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, look for the game’s Repair or Reset controls where available. Battle.net and other publisher launchers generally provide a scan-and-repair function; exact labels vary by version. Verification may redownload files, but it does not necessarily fix a damaged user configuration, shader cache, mod, or graphics driver.
Disable overlays, mods, and injectors as a test
Close the game and temporarily turn off overlays and tools that hook into a game or display performance data: Discord, NVIDIA or AMD in-game overlays, Xbox Game Bar, Steam overlay, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, capture or RGB utilities, ReShade, and unofficial launchers. These are possible conflict sources, not proven causes in every case. Restart the game; if it works, re-enable tools one at a time to find the conflict.
Reset settings or rebuild the shader cache cautiously
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Back up saves and configuration folders, especially if the game stores local saves or settings alongside its cache.
- Use the game’s own Reset graphics settings option if it has one.
- Delete only a cache or shader-cache folder identified by the game’s official support instructions. There is no safe universal folder path.
- Relaunch and let shader compilation finish without interrupting it.
Do not delete a similarly named AppData folder just because a general guide suggests it; locations and contents differ by game.

Check requirements, temperatures, and system stability
Compare the PC with the game’s requirements
Use the game’s official minimum and recommended requirements to check GPU model and feature support, dedicated VRAM, system RAM, CPU, Windows edition and 64-bit requirements, DirectX requirements, and storage. A current DirectX version cannot add a feature level or memory capacity that the GPU does not have.
Return tuning to defaults and watch for heat-related symptoms
Temporarily restore GPU and CPU core and memory clocks, undervolts, and custom power or temperature limits to defaults. If system stability is generally questionable, test without XMP or EXPO as well. Monitor GPU and CPU temperatures with a trusted tool and note whether the crash follows extended play, visual artifacts, a freeze, or a full system shutdown. Do not increase voltage or edit the registry as a first-line response.
If the whole PC freezes or reboots, or if artifacts appear, the problem may extend beyond the game. Check Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer around the crash time for a recorded display-driver or hardware error. Those logs can help support staff, but an event entry alone does not prove a particular component is defective.
Repair Windows system files if several games fail
DISM and System File Checker can address Windows component or protected-file corruption; they do not repair a GPU driver or game installation. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Run each command and wait for it to finish before starting the next:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use another graphics API only if the game supports it
Some games document a launch option for DirectX 11, DirectX 12, or Vulkan. These options are title-specific: do not assume that -d3d11, -d3d12, or -vulkan works in your game. Check the game’s official support page or launcher instructions before trying one. A publisher’s game-specific announcement listing rendering launch options illustrates why a flag documented for one title should not be copied to another.
DirectX 11 can be a useful test on older hardware or with a troublesome game-and-driver combination; DirectX 12 may expose a different set of engine or driver issues. Vulkan is available only in games that implement it. Switching renderers can trigger shader rebuilding or change performance and graphics settings.
For older games, check legacy components and compatibility
Some older titles need optional side-by-side DirectX runtime components associated with DirectX 9-era games. That is different from replacing DirectX 12. Use the runtime installer supplied by the game or an official Microsoft source, and follow the game’s support instructions. Do not download DLLs from unofficial sites.

For an older title, check its official patches and compatibility notes first. Use compatibility mode or disable fullscreen optimizations only as a targeted test when the publisher recommends it. Run the game as administrator only when its support guidance calls for that change. Historical advice about changing display scaling or editing registry keys is not a general repair; avoid registry changes unless a trusted, game-specific support source explicitly requires them and explains a backup procedure.
Know when the evidence points to a game bug or hardware issue
Escalate to the game’s publisher when it is one title
If one game alone fails—particularly just after a game update—check the publisher’s known-issues page and support channels. Verify files, remove mods or custom DLLs, rebuild the documented shader cache, and test only renderer options the publisher supports. If the failure is widespread or reproducible on otherwise stable systems, a game patch may be needed rather than another Windows tweak.
When contacting support, provide the game edition, exact error and code, crash timing, recent update history, Windows version, GPU and driver version, steps that reproduce it, and the dxdiag report. Include whether other games fail and what troubleshooting steps changed the result.
Seek hardware diagnosis when failures cross games or affect the whole PC
Consider professional diagnosis if several games continue to crash after an official driver reinstall and default clocks, or if the GPU disappears from Device Manager, artifacts appear, temperatures are abnormal, or the PC repeatedly freezes or reboots. Those symptoms justify further hardware testing; the DirectX message alone does not establish that a GPU is defective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not pay for a “DirectX repair” utility
The practical fixes here are Windows updates and repair tools, the game’s own launcher, and free official GPU drivers. A paid DirectX repair tool, registry cleaner, unofficial DLL pack, or one-click PC optimizer is a poor fit for this error and can add risk without addressing the cause. Permanent antivirus disabling is also not a fix; if a security tool quarantined a game file, confirm its authenticity and consult the publisher before restoring or allowing it.
