A failed WordPress migration is usually recoverable without reinstalling WordPress. Keep the old server online, make fresh copies of the files and database, then isolate the failure in this order: database connection, file and table completeness, site URLs, serialized data, rewrite rules, plugins, caches, and finally DNS. Do not point the domain permanently at the new server until the replacement passes a complete test.

Preserve the working site before changing anything
Do not delete the old hosting account or overwrite the only copy of the destination. The WordPress migration handbook explicitly says that moving to a new server does not require a reinstall. Treat the old installation as your rollback source while you repair the new one.

Make independent backups
- Copy the complete WordPress directory from the old server, including
wp-content/uploads, themes, plugins, language files, and hidden files such as.htaccess. - Export the production database again and keep the SQL dump separate from the files. A backup made by the migration tool is useful, but an independently saved dump gives you a clean recovery point.
- Record the old database name, user, host, table prefix, PHP version, active theme, and active plugins. These details help you distinguish a missing component from a configuration error.
- Do not run search-and-replace or bulk cleanup against the only copy of the database. Work on a verified duplicate.
Verify what arrived at the destination
Compare the destination with the old copy before debugging WordPress itself. Confirm that the SQL dump was imported into the intended database, that the uploads directory contains recent media, and that the theme and plugin directories are complete. A site can appear to have a database problem when it is actually reading an empty database, the wrong database, or a database with a different table prefix.

Fix an “Error establishing a database connection” page
That message means WordPress cannot establish a usable connection to the database; it does not identify a single cause. Check every part of the connection rather than changing one value at random.

Confirm the destination database exists and was imported
In the destination host’s database panel, verify the database name exactly, including capitalization where the host treats names as case-sensitive. Open the database and confirm that WordPress tables are present. If the database is empty or contains an unrelated site, import the verified SQL dump again into the intended database.
Check the four connection settings
Open wp-config.php on the new server and compare these values with the destination host’s credentials:

Also verify that the database user has permission to use the database. A correct password is not enough if the user was created but never granted access.
Match the table prefix
WordPress reads the prefix assigned to $table_prefix in wp-config.php. If the imported tables begin with a prefix such as site7_ but the configuration still expects wp_, WordPress will behave as if its options and content do not exist. Set the prefix to the one used by the imported tables, then test both the front end and /wp-admin/.
Recover from a white screen or HTTP 500
A blank response and a 500 status generally indicate a fatal PHP error, a server configuration problem, or a component that is incompatible with the destination environment. Do not display diagnostic output to visitors.

Enable controlled logging
In wp-config.php, use WordPress’s logging constants so errors are written to a log while display remains disabled:

Remove or disable debugging after the investigation, especially on a public site.
Isolate plugins and themes
Temporarily deactivate all plugins. If the site recovers, reactivate them one at a time until the failing component is identified. If the dashboard cannot be opened, rename the plugins directory temporarily or deactivate plugins through the database, then restore the directory name after testing. A theme can cause the same symptom; switch temporarily to a default theme or restore the known-good theme files. Once the cause is found, update, replace, or remove that component instead of reactivating everything at once.
Correct the site URL without locking yourself out
After a move, WordPress must know the destination scheme and hostname. The WordPress Address is where the core files are installed; the Site Address is where visitors reach the site. Both normally use the new HTTPS scheme and hostname, including any intentional subdirectory.
Use a temporary override when the dashboard is unavailable
Add these constants above the line in wp-config.php that says to stop editing:

define('WP_HOME', 'https://example.com'); define('WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com');Replace the example with the real destination address. These constants override the values stored in the wp_options table and can restore access long enough to repair the database. They do not rewrite old URLs inside post content, widgets, menus, serialized plugin settings, or other tables.
Repair the stored values
If you can reach the dashboard, check the two fields under Settings > General. If not, update the home and siteurl rows in the destination database’s options table, using the actual table prefix. Remove temporary WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL definitions after the database values are correct; leaving them in place can hide future changes in the dashboard.
Replace old URLs safely
When the domain, protocol, or path changes, old addresses can remain in content and settings. Use a migration tool or script that understands PHP serialization. Serialized values include a character count, so a blind whole-database text replacement can leave lengths incorrect and corrupt settings or widgets. Back up first, run the replacement on the verified copy, and search for every relevant old form, such as the old HTTP scheme, old HTTPS scheme, hostname, and subdirectory. Then clear caches and test representative content.
Repair 404 errors on internal pages
If the front page loads but posts, pages, categories, or custom URLs return 404, the database is often fine and the rewrite layer is not.

- Without changing the selected structure, click Save Changes. WordPress regenerates its rewrite rules.
- Inspect the document root for the correct
.htaccessfile when the server uses Apache. Confirm that the web server allows overrides and that its rewrite module is enabled. - On another server type, verify that the equivalent rewrite configuration routes requests to
index.php. A migration can copy files without copying the virtual-host rules that made pretty permalinks work. - Retest a normal post, a page, a category archive, and any custom post type URL.
Fix missing CSS, images, and media
First determine whether files are absent or merely referenced with the old address. Open a missing image URL directly. A 404 means the file or path is missing; a redirect to the old host or a mixed-content warning points to URL configuration.

- Compare
wp-content/uploadsby year and month with the old server, including file permissions and capitalization. - Confirm that the active theme and required plugin assets exist on the destination.
- Correct the WordPress URL values and run a serialization-aware replacement for old content URLs.
- Purge browser, server, CDN, and plugin caches. A cache can continue serving old HTML or asset URLs after the database is fixed.
Stop redirect loops and HTTPS warnings
All layers must agree on the public scheme. Check the WordPress URL values, the certificate and HTTPS listener, reverse-proxy headers, and any forced-HTTPS rule in the web server or control panel. A proxy that terminates TLS but does not correctly communicate the original scheme can make WordPress redirect an already secure request back to HTTPS repeatedly.
Temporarily disable duplicate force-HTTPS rules while testing, then keep one deliberate rule at the appropriate layer. Test in a private browser window after purging caches so an old redirect is not mistaken for a current one. Inspect links and asset requests for HTTP URLs when the page is served over HTTPS.
Restore content that is only partially present
When some posts, users, settings, or media are missing, stop adding new content to the destination and compare it with the preserved old copy. Check that the destination is using the expected database and prefix, then compare the database tables and row counts at a practical level. Confirm that uploads, themes, and plugins were copied completely. If a migration tool restored only part of a backup, repeating individual file copies can create a site made from mismatched versions. The safer recovery is an end-to-end transfer from one verified database and file backup.
Regain administration after a URL change
If the front end redirects correctly but /wp-admin/ loops, redirects to the old host, or refuses login, use a temporary WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL override as described above, or correct the home and siteurl values directly in the options table. Check for a hard-coded old URL in a security, login, or redirect plugin after access returns. Remove temporary overrides once the stored values are fixed, then clear all caches and test a fresh private session.
Test the new server before changing DNS
Use a temporary host mapping on your own computer, the destination server’s IP address, or a staging URL. Some migration tools also provide a destination URL and a server_ip option for this pre-DNS check. The test must exercise the real destination files and database, not a cached copy of the old host.

- Open the home page and sign in to
/wp-admin/. - Open several recent and older posts, pages, category archives, and custom post types.
- Load images, downloadable files, theme assets, and responsive layouts.
- Submit every important form and verify delivery, storage, and confirmation messages.
- Test redirects from old paths, canonical URLs, HTTPS, and any application-specific rewrite rules.
- Check scheduled tasks, publishing, cron-driven jobs, backups, and integrations that use absolute URLs or server credentials.
- Review search-engine visibility settings, robots behavior, XML sitemaps, and canonical links so a staging configuration is not accidentally published.
- Inspect logs for new PHP, database, permission, or rewrite errors while performing these tests.
Keep the old server available until this checklist passes and DNS is serving the intended new IP. Lowering DNS time-to-live before the move can reduce waiting time, but it does not remove resolver caching; maintain the old site long enough to handle visitors who still reach it.

If files, database tables, or settings came from different backup points, do not try to patch every discrepancy in place. Put the destination into maintenance mode if appropriate, take a fresh destination backup for forensic reference, and repeat the transfer from one verified source set. Import the database, copy the complete WordPress directory, verify wp-config.php, correct URLs, run a serialization-aware replacement, regenerate permalinks, and repeat the pre-DNS checklist. This creates a known state that can be rolled back instead of preserving an unknown mixture of old and new data.
Manual migration, a plugin, or managed help?
The method changes the amount of work, not the responsibilities. Every approach still needs an independent backup, URL validation, a test before DNS, and a rollback plan.

A simpler transfer is not a substitute for verification. Whichever method you choose, insist on a backup you can restore independently and a destination test completed before the domain is switched.
Post-cutover checks and rollback triggers
After DNS changes, monitor both the new server and the remaining traffic to the old one. Confirm that the domain resolves to the intended IP from more than one network, then repeat the critical front-end, administration, form, media, redirect, and scheduled-task checks. Watch logs for database errors, PHP fatals, authentication failures, and unexpected 404s.
Roll back by restoring DNS to the old server when the new site loses data, cannot maintain database writes, exposes a security problem, or fails a critical business function that cannot be repaired quickly. Keep the old site’s database and uploads unchanged while deciding whether to repair the destination or repeat the migration. Once the new site has operated correctly for an agreed retention period and backups are verified, decommission the old server deliberately rather than immediately.

The Bottom Line
The safest fix is a controlled recovery: preserve the old site, verify the database and files, correct URLs with serialization-aware replacement, regenerate rewrites, isolate plugins, test through a temporary host mapping, and keep the old server until DNS and the full checklist pass.
