Start by checking the game platform’s service status, then restart the launcher or console and retry. If downloads still stop, use the repair steps for your platform and check whether the error points to the network, storage, or installation permissions. A percentage alone is not enough to identify the cause.
Before troubleshooting, note what is happening
Record the device and launcher or storefront, the game, any error code or message, and the point where the download stops. Note whether it is a new download or an update and whether other downloads work. These clues help distinguish a single-game problem from an issue affecting the platform, connection, or storage.
Check for a platform outage
Look at the service-status page for the platform you are using before changing local files or reinstalling. Steam says a system-wide outage can make Steam inaccessible; Epic recommends checking its status for slow downloads, and PlayStation’s stuck-download guidance includes checking service status. If the service reports an incident, wait for it to clear and retry.
Restart and apply the fix for your platform
Steam
Restart Steam and your computer, then retry the download. If it still fails, use the repair options that match the problem rather than running every possible fix at once. Steam lists clearing the download cache, repairing the library folder, verifying installed game files, changing the download region, and trying another drive as troubleshooting options for update and installation problems. Its download-cache instructions are under Steam > Settings > Downloads. Clearing the cache does not affect installed games, but you will need to sign in again.

For more installation and update steps, follow Steam’s update and installation troubleshooting. Use Verify integrity of game files when an installed game may have corrupted files; it checks and repairs installed files, rather than serving as a general network fix.
Epic Games Launcher
If a download is stuck, Epic’s download troubleshooting guide describes signing out, force-closing Epic tasks, enabling debug logging, then signing in and retrying. For slow speeds, Epic also recommends checking service status, trying Ethernet or another connection, clearing the device cache, and confirming that the download speed limit is off. DNS and proxy configuration can also matter. Follow the current official instructions, since launcher menus and steps can change.

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Test the console’s network connection and check PSN status first. For relevant stuck-download problems, PlayStation’s download troubleshooting instructions point PS5 owners to Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option; PS4 instructions say to rebuild the database. Use the instructions for your exact console model and follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode guidance.
EA app
For EA app download problems, try the App Recovery cache-clear option if it applies to your case. EA identifies two specific error clues in its download and installation troubleshooting guide: a PC download that stops at 4 GB may be going to a FAT32 drive, which cannot handle files larger than 4 GB, while a “Create Folder Error” indicates a permissions problem. These clues apply to those symptoms; they do not explain every failed download.

Test the network if the symptoms point to it
If several downloads fail or the launcher reports a connection problem, test one network change at a time and retry. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.
- Try a wired Ethernet connection if your device and router support it, or test another internet connection. This checks whether the Wi-Fi path or current network is contributing; it will not resolve an outage, an account entitlement issue, a damaged launcher cache, or a failing drive.
- Restart the router and check the launcher’s speed-limit settings. Epic’s slow-download guide also discusses DNS and proxy configuration.
- Review firewall settings and applications that may interfere with the connection. Steam notes that university networks and proxies may block required ports; connection trouble limited to particular hours can point to an ISP-related issue. See Steam’s network and connectivity troubleshooting.
Check free space, the destination drive, and permissions
Confirm that the selected drive has enough free space for the game and its update, is available, and allows the launcher to write files. An update may need space to install its files, so a drive that is nearly full can still cause trouble even when some space remains.

Steam’s installation guide includes a Repair Folder option for library-folder permission problems and suggests trying another drive if installation errors persist. If an installed game may be damaged, use Steam’s file-verification option rather than deleting game data. Do not remove local game files or saves unless you have checked the platform’s backup and recovery guidance.

- All downloads are affected: Check service status and investigate the launcher or network before focusing on one game’s files.
- Only one game is affected: Check that title’s installed files, destination drive, and any error specific to its installation.
- The download repeatedly stops at a particular size: Read the exact error and check the destination’s file-system limits where relevant; EA specifically flags a 4 GB stop as a possible FAT32 issue for its PC downloads.
- The launcher reports a folder or access error: Check whether the destination is writable and use the platform’s folder-repair or permission guidance.
- The problem changes with network or time of day: Test another connection and investigate router, proxy, firewall, or ISP conditions before reinstalling.
Prefer reversible checks—status, restart, connection test, and launcher repair—before removing files or reinstalling. The exact error message, platform, and whether other downloads work are usually more useful clues than the percentage where a download stops.
