You can usually move a PC game without downloading it again, but the safe method depends on the launcher that installed it. Use Steam’s built-in move command when available; Epic’s documented method copies the game files and then verifies them through a new install; Microsoft Store titles may be movable through Windows. Don’t simply drag a folder and assume the launcher will recognize it.
Before moving a game
Identify the storefront or launcher that manages the game, then use its supported move or recovery process. Keep the original files or a backup until the launcher has finished moving or verifying the game and you have confirmed it launches from the destination.
- Make sure the destination drive has enough free space. Copying or verifying files takes time, and the available guidance does not establish a universal duration.
- Keep the destination drive connected and available at the same path while you play, especially if it is external.
- Treat the game installation and its saves as separate things. Save files and settings may be stored elsewhere or handled by cloud saves; check the particular game’s support information.
Move a Steam game
Steam supports moving an installed game to another library folder. Create or select a library on the destination drive, then use the game’s Properties and Move Install Folder command. Steam’s instructions are in Moving a Steam Installation and Games; consult them if the labels or layout differ in your client.
Steam cautions that it does not recommend installing Steam on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. That warning concerns external-drive use; it does not establish a performance result for every individual game or drive.

Move an Epic Games Launcher title
Epic’s documented process uses a temporary install to register the destination folder, then verifies the copied files. Follow the sequence carefully so you retain a backup until verification is complete.
- Close the game and make a backup copy of its installed folder.
- In Epic Games Launcher, uninstall the game.
- Start installing it again and choose the desired destination folder.
- After the download begins, cancel it at about 2–3%.
- Copy the backup files into the newly created installation directory, replacing duplicate files when prompted.
- Resume the install in the launcher and let it verify the files. Epic says that after verification, the game should be launchable. See Epic’s instructions for moving an installed game.
This process avoids downloading all game content again, but still relies on Epic’s install and verification workflow. Moving the Epic Games Launcher application itself is a separate task from moving a game; Epic covers its launcher installation path in a separate support article.

Move a Microsoft Store or Xbox app game
Use Windows Installed Apps
For the title covered by its instructions, Age of Empires Support describes moving it through Windows settings: on Windows 11, search for Installed Apps, select the game, choose Move, select a drive, and confirm. On Windows 10, use Apps & features. The exact availability of the Move option can depend on the title and Windows setup. See Age of Empires Support’s move instructions.
For that Age of Empires title, the support article says save files, recorded games, and crash reports remain on C: and must stay there to be accessible in-game. This is a title-specific warning, not a rule for every Microsoft Store or Xbox game.

Xbox app management options
Xbox Wire described move and repair controls in the Xbox app’s Manage view in an announcement dated November 18, 2021, initially for Insiders. Menu names, feature availability, and which games can be moved may vary with the current app and title. The announcement also listed possible launch problems for Xbox app games installed on external drives, so consult Xbox Wire’s feature notes as historical guidance rather than a guarantee about every current installation.
If the launcher says the game is uninstalled
Don’t immediately download the game again. First check that the files are still in the destination folder and that the launcher is pointed at the correct library or location. For Steam, its recovery instructions for games appearing as uninstalled address checking game folders and alternate library locations.

If the launcher recognizes the game but reports missing or damaged files, let its verification or repair process finish. If the game still will not start, use the game publisher’s support route rather than editing launcher manifests or registry entries.
