There is no single Windows 11 setting that fixes every game-launch problem. Start by identifying whether one game or every game is affected, note the exact error message, and work from low-risk checks toward repairs. Restarting, updating, verifying the installation, checking requirements, and disabling conflicts solve many cases without reinstalling Windows.
Windows 11 supports games from Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox and Game Pass, Microsoft Store, GOG, publisher launchers, and standalone installers. The correct fix depends on the storefront, the game’s age, and what changed before it stopped working. Before changing anything, record the exact error code, the game version, launcher, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, and whether the game worked previously.

- Restart Windows rather than only shutting down the launcher.
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.
- Update the game and its launcher.
- Check the game publisher’s support page for a known outage, hotfix, anti-cheat issue, or Windows compatibility notice.
If the problem started immediately after a Windows, game, or driver update, that timing matters. Look for a newer patch first. If it began directly after a graphics-driver update, test the latest official driver and, if necessary, roll back to the previous stable version.

2. Check requirements and the selected GPU
Compare the game’s published requirements with your system:
- Windows edition, version, and architecture
- CPU and supported instruction sets
- GPU model, dedicated video memory, and required DirectX feature level
- System RAM
- Available storage space
- Required launcher, online connection, anti-cheat, Secure Boot, or TPM features
Minimum requirements may only mean that the game can start at low settings. Recommended requirements generally target a smoother experience at a stated resolution and quality level. If the hardware lacks a required GPU feature, memory capacity, or supported processor, a Windows setting cannot reliably compensate. Steam likewise warns that games may fail to launch when a computer is at or below the published requirements: Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance.
On a laptop, Windows may assign the game to integrated graphics. Set the preferred GPU through Settings > System > Display > Graphics:

- Select Options.
- Choose High performance, if that is the dedicated GPU.
- Select Save, then restart the game.
These settings are separate from Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations, which target compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless modes. They are not a universal launch repair. See Microsoft’s per-app graphics and windowed-game settings.
3. Verify or repair the game installation
Close the game, exit and reopen the launcher, and use its Verify, Repair, Scan, or Verify integrity function. Wait until it finishes, restart the launcher, and test again.
Steam
Open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam may redownload damaged files.
Epic Games Store
Open Library, select the three-dot menu beside the game, and choose Manage > Verify.
Xbox app and Game Pass
Open the Xbox app, select the game, open its … menu, and look for Manage or a repair/verify option. The exact controls can differ by game and app version.

Microsoft Store
Open Microsoft Store and choose Library > Get updates. Then repair the affected app or game as described below.
GOG, publisher launchers, and standalone installers
Use the launcher’s repair or scan command. Depending on the title, this may be in the game’s properties, installation settings, or a separate launcher menu. EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Rockstar Games Launcher, and other publishers use different labels, so follow the current support page for that launcher.
Verification does not necessarily repair a damaged configuration file, save, mod, launcher cache, or failing drive. If verification repeatedly finds the same files, check free space, folder permissions, storage health, and antivirus interference.
4. Disable mods, overlays, and background conflicts
Temporarily test a clean launch with nonessential integrations disabled:
- Discord, Steam, NVIDIA, AMD, or Xbox overlays
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- Recording, streaming, RGB, and hardware-monitoring tools
- Mods, injectors, ReShade, and compatibility wrappers
- Third-party antivirus or endpoint-security controls
- VPNs or traffic filters for online games
Disable one category at a time so you can identify the conflict. Do not permanently disable Windows Security or antivirus protection. Confirm that the game and launcher are legitimate, update the security product, and use a narrowly scoped exception only when the publisher or security vendor supports it. Remove the exception if it does not help. Microsoft lists antivirus and system-utility programs among possible causes of games that crash or close unexpectedly: Microsoft’s game-crash troubleshooting page.
5. Update or roll back the graphics driver
- Identify the GPU in Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Download the driver from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or your computer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install it and restart if prompted.
- Test the game again.
A newer driver is the sensible first test for a long-standing problem, but a rollback is reasonable when the game stopped working immediately after a driver update. Avoid generic “driver updater” utilities; they make it harder to know exactly what changed.
6. Repair Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services
Game Pass and Microsoft Store games can fail because the Store, Xbox app, Gaming Services, or Microsoft account is broken even when the game files are intact.

- Update Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library > Get updates.
- Update the Xbox app and Gaming Services if updates are offered.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or affected game.
- Choose Advanced options > Repair.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset.
- Restart Windows and test the game.

For persistent Xbox app or Gaming Services failures, use Microsoft’s official Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC if it is currently offered in the Xbox app or Microsoft support documentation. Avoid old PowerShell removal commands copied from forums as a first-line fix; they may be outdated or damage Store and Xbox components.
7. Fix older games with compatibility tools
Windows 11 does not guarantee that every Windows 10 or earlier game will work. Older installers, deprecated APIs, 16-bit components, copy-protection systems, and unsupported drivers can fail even when the game itself is legitimate.
- Locate the game’s executable file.
- Right-click it and choose Properties > Compatibility.
- First select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Alternatively, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- If needed, test compatibility mode for Windows 8 or Windows 7.
- Apply the setting only to the game executable and test it.
- Undo the setting if stability gets worse.
Compatibility mode is a test, not a guarantee. It can interfere with modern launchers, anti-cheat, and games that require newer graphics APIs. For abandoned titles, reputable community documentation such as PCGamingWiki may provide workarounds, but distinguish those from official publisher support. If an error mentions d3dx9_*.dll, the game may need legacy DirectX 9 side-by-side components. Having a modern DirectX version installed does not guarantee that every older component is present.
- Type
dxdiaginto Start and open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - Review the DirectX information and the Display and Sound tabs for reported problems.
- Install missing DirectX components only from Microsoft or the game publisher.
- Restart and test the game.
Microsoft explains the legacy-component issue and provides the official DirectX installation guidance. If the error names Visual C++, use the redistributable installer supplied by the publisher or the game’s Redist, Prerequisites, or _CommonRedist folder where appropriate.
Do not download individual DLL files from random websites or replace them manually. A file can be malicious, the wrong architecture, or the wrong version.
9. Reset damaged graphics settings
A black screen or crash immediately after changing resolution, HDR, ray tracing, or fullscreen settings often points to a damaged configuration rather than the main installation.
- Use the publisher’s safe-mode or launch-options feature if available.
- Try windowed or borderless mode.
- Temporarily disable HDR and ray tracing.
- Back up saves first.
- Find the configuration folder using the game’s official support page.
- Rename the folder instead of deleting it, then launch the game.
- Restore settings gradually after a successful launch.
Configuration paths vary. They may be under Documents, Saved Games, AppData, or the installation directory, and renaming the wrong folder can affect saves.

10. Check storage, permissions, and anti-cheat requirements
Leave enough free space for updates, shader caches, and temporary files. If the launcher reports access or write errors, check the game-library folder permissions and confirm that the drive is available. Avoid routinely running games as administrator; use it only as a diagnostic test or when the publisher specifically requires it.
If a drive is failing, repeated verification and reinstallation will not fix the underlying problem. Back up important data before investigating disk errors. Windows’ chkdsk /f C: command can repair certain file-system errors and may require a restart, but it is not a routine game-launch fix.
Competitive games may require a particular anti-cheat service, Secure Boot, TPM, or virtualization configuration. These requirements are title-specific and can change after a BIOS, firmware, Windows, or anti-cheat update. Follow the publisher’s error-code documentation and repair or reinstall the anti-cheat component through the publisher’s official instructions. Do not disable Secure Boot or core Windows security features merely to make a game start.
11. Repair Windows system files
Use Windows repair tools after game-specific and launcher-specific checks, or earlier if multiple unrelated games and applications are failing.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannowAllow SFC to reach 100 percent, restart Windows, and test the game. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the files SFC needs to repair corrupted Windows components: Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions.

Reinstalling is reasonable when verification fails repeatedly, the launcher cannot repair its installation, or the game’s files are clearly corrupted. Back up saves and screenshots first; cloud synchronization is not a substitute for a local backup.
Choose the smallest relevant repair:
- One broken game: reinstall that game after verifying files and checking its configuration.
- Several games in one launcher: repair or reinstall the launcher first.
- Xbox or Store games: repair or reset the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or affected game before reinstalling everything.
- Failures after a driver update: test a driver rollback rather than reinstalling every game.
- Every game and application fails: investigate Windows, hardware, storage, and security software.
Reinstallation cannot fix unsupported hardware, a publisher bug, a defective anti-cheat update, or a failing drive.

A title-specific bug, DRM limitation, unsupported hardware feature, or anti-cheat update may require the publisher, not another Windows tweak. If the game is genuinely incompatible, consider a publisher patch, supported remaster, legally appropriate compatibility layer or virtual machine, an older supported Windows system, an official console or cloud version, or a refund under the store’s current policy.

Why does a game work on Windows 10 but not Windows 11?
Windows 11 can expose incompatibilities involving old installers, deprecated APIs, copy protection, drivers, security features, or changed system requirements. Use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and check the publisher’s current support information rather than assuming Windows 11 is universally incompatible.
Should I always run the game as administrator?
No. Use administrator mode only as a short diagnostic test or when the publisher specifically requires it. Permanently elevating games can create permissions problems and does not repair missing dependencies.

Why is DirectX missing if Windows already has DirectX 12?
Some older games require legacy DirectX side-by-side components, such as DirectX 9 files. Install the official legacy runtime from Microsoft or the publisher; do not download individual DLL files.
Should I reinstall Windows?
Usually not. First verify files, repair the launcher or Store components, test the GPU driver, disable conflicts, repair runtimes, and run DISM and SFC. A Windows repair becomes more reasonable only when many unrelated applications fail and system corruption is suspected.
Why do Game Pass games fail while Steam games work?
Xbox and Microsoft Store games depend on Microsoft account authentication, the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services. Update and repair those components before reinstalling the game.
What if every game crashes?
