First identify the guitar’s model and the platform it was made for: there is no universal pairing sequence, and a legacy Rock Band guitar may need its original wireless adapter while a Rock Band 4 guitar for PS4 pairs through the console’s Bluetooth menu. Then check whether the problem is pairing with the system or recognition inside a game; those are separate issues.
Identify the guitar and where the connection fails
Check the instrument’s label or model name, the console or PC family it supports, and how it connects. In particular, distinguish a Rock Band 4 guitar from a legacy Rock Band instrument, and Bluetooth pairing from a model-specific wireless USB adapter. Do not assume a generic Bluetooth receiver or USB dongle can replace an instrument’s original adapter.
Next, determine what “not connecting” means: the system cannot see the guitar, the guitar pairs but disconnects, or the game does not respond to it. The steps below address those different failure points.
Check power before pairing
For a battery-powered guitar, install fresh batteries before troubleshooting. Epic Games’ official Rock Band 4 PS4 pairing instructions specifically recommend fresh batteries. In that pairing process, a red indicator means the batteries should be replaced.

Pair a Rock Band 4 guitar with a PS4
- On the PS4, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices.
- Hold the PlayStation button on the guitar, then press the small wireless button on the instrument—the white button where an amp plug would be.
- When the guitar appears in the Bluetooth device list, select it and assign a profile.
- Wait for the guitar’s indicator to turn solid blue. Epic Games says a solid blue light means the controller is connected. If it continues blinking, repeat the pairing steps.
- Open Rock Band 4 and press Options to join.
These steps apply to the cited Rock Band 4 PS4 process; they are not a universal pairing path for every Rock Band guitar or platform.
Sync a legacy Rock Band guitar with its original adapter
Epic Games’ legacy Rock Band guitar support instructions say these controllers require the original adapter. Connect that adapter to the console, press its sync button, and then press the guitar’s sync button. A successful connection shows solid lights on both the adapter and the guitar.

If pairing fails, remove other instruments while syncing and try a different USB port. You can also try pressing the guitar’s sync button first, followed by the adapter or console button. If both devices keep blinking after repeated attempts, the problem may be hardware-related.
Address repeated disconnects
If a PS4 Rock Band 4 wireless guitar disconnects frequently despite fresh batteries, Harmonix says its PS4 Wireless Guitar firmware update addresses potential connection issues. The published procedure requires a Bluetooth-capable Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 PC, or a Mac running OS X 10.10 or later. The page is legacy documentation, so confirm its updater download is still available before attempting the procedure. Harmonix says the Xbox One Wireless Guitar does not need a firmware update.

When a guitar connects but is not recognized in a game
A system-level connection does not guarantee that a particular game or mode supports the guitar. For example, Epic’s Fortnite Festival v30.00 announcement, published May 23, 2024, says Pro Lead and Pro Bass can be played on console or PC without a supported guitar controller. Keyboard-and-mouse keybinds and controller-to-keyboard remapping provide an input fallback for those modes; they do not repair the guitar or establish support in other games.

If the instrument is faulty or unavailable, match any replacement to the platform. PDP’s official product pages list separate RIFFMASTER wireless guitar controller versions:

These are distinct platform versions, not one universal controller. Check the current manufacturer listing and the game’s compatibility requirements before buying. A new guitar also will not resolve a missing original adapter or an incorrect pairing method for an existing legacy instrument.
