How to Fix a Handheld Gaming PC That Won’t Detect a New SSD

Troubleshoot a new SSD in a handheld gaming PC by separating firmware detection problems from Windows disk setup issues—and using steps specific to your model.

First check whether the handheld’s firmware detects the SSD. If it does, the issue is likely in Windows or the disk’s setup; if it does not, check that the drive matches the exact device and is installed correctly. A fresh operating-system install cannot fix an SSD the firmware cannot see.

Start by identifying the handheld and SSD

SSD size and interface vary by handheld, so confirm compatibility with the exact model before troubleshooting software. For example, ASUS specifies a compact 2230 M.2 NVMe drive for the original ROG Ally; that specification should not be assumed to apply to every handheld or every Ally variant. See the original ROG Ally SSD upgrade guide.

If the new drive is not compatible, or is not seated properly, Windows settings will not make it appear. Follow the manufacturer’s service guidance for your exact model when checking or reseating the drive.

Check whether the SSD appears in firmware

Enter the device’s BIOS or UEFI using the method specified for that handheld. Do not assume another model’s button shortcut or menu path applies. On the ROG Ally, ASUS says to hold or repeatedly press volume down while powering on. From Windows, its FAQ also gives this route: Settings > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart Now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. See the ROG Ally FAQ.

  • SSD absent from firmware: Prioritize exact-model compatibility, installation, seating, and connector inspection under the manufacturer’s instructions. Windows Disk Management and OS recovery cannot resolve a drive the firmware does not detect.
  • SSD visible in firmware: Continue with the operating system’s disk-management and driver checks below.

If Windows detects the disk, check Disk Management

In Windows, open Disk Management and find the new disk. ASUS’s Windows SSD troubleshooting guidance distinguishes several states that need different actions:

What you see What to do Important caution
The disk is offline Bring the disk online. Confirm you selected the new SSD, especially if other disks are listed.
A recognized volume has no drive letter Assign a drive letter to the volume. Do not create or format a volume when the existing volume may contain data.
The disk has unallocated space Create a new simple volume only if you have confirmed the space is empty and you intend to set up a new volume. Creating or formatting volumes can destroy data. Stop if you need to recover files or are unsure what the disk contains.

If the disk does not appear in Disk Management even though firmware detects it, check Windows updates and drivers next. ASUS recommends current BIOS, Windows packages, and drivers. Its guidance also describes enabling or uninstalling the disk device in Device Manager, then restarting Windows so it can reinstall the driver. These steps apply to Windows and do not replace the firmware check.

Reinstall the operating system only when the SSD is detected

OS recovery is appropriate when the drive is visible but the handheld cannot boot or needs a fresh system installation. It is not a remedy for an SSD missing from BIOS or UEFI.

Original ROG Ally

For the original ROG Ally, ASUS recommends updating the BIOS before an SSD replacement and documents ASUS Cloud Recovery to reinstall Windows afterward. Its guide says to reduce the battery charge to 25% or below and remove microSD cards before opening the device; it lists a size 0 Phillips screwdriver and a guitar pick or other thin plastic piece among the tools. After replacement, it directs owners to enter BIOS by powering on while holding volume down, then use Cloud Recovery. These instructions are specific to the original Ally; follow the guide and confirm your exact model before using them.

When to stop and get model-specific help

If the SSD remains absent from firmware after you have verified compatibility and checked installation according to the exact model’s instructions, contact the manufacturer or use its official repair guidance. There is no single safe opening or repair procedure for all handheld gaming PCs; avoid forceful handling or repeatedly opening the device on guesswork.
