How to Fix a Hytale Server Not Loading Chunks

A Hytale server can connect successfully while world data remains blank or slow. Follow this evidence-based sequence to isolate Windows QUIC adapter drivers, resource pressure, mismatched versions, UDP transport, storage problems, damaged columns and plugin chunk flags.

If a Hytale server accepts your connection but terrain stays blank, appears very slowly, or never fills in, isolate the cause in this order: test the Windows network adapter path, reduce the server’s view distance, verify the Java/server files and UDP transport, check SSD space and world files, then repair a specific column or disable a plugin if the fault is localized. Do not delete the world before making a backup.

Identify which failure you have

“Not loading chunks” can describe several different failures. A singleplayer world that works while a multiplayer world is slow or empty points first to the client’s network adapter and Hytale’s QUIC traffic. If every player sees delayed terrain while exploring, server resource pressure is more likely. A repeatable hole or frozen area at one coordinate suggests a damaged column or generation problem. A failure that begins immediately after an update raises a protocol or file-version mismatch. If the problem exists only with plugins enabled, treat plugin chunk requests as a separate branch.

  • Singleplayer works; a server connection is slow and the world remains missing: perform the USB Ethernet-adapter test before changing world settings.
  • All players see delayed terrain, especially while exploring in different directions: lower view distance and watch RAM, CPU and garbage-collection pressure.
  • Only one location or column fails: back up the world and use the Update 7 chunk diagnostics for that coordinate.
  • The problem starts after an update: update both client and server and confirm that their protocol versions match.
  • The problem disappears when plugins are disabled: inspect plugin chunk-loading flags and configuration.

1. Rule out the Windows adapter and QUIC path

Hytale uses QUIC for its game connection. Hypixel Studios’ support guidance, published January 13, 2026, identifies rare driver issues on some Intel and Realtek network devices that can affect QUIC over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Ordinary web browsing can remain normal while Hytale world data fails to stream, so a general internet speed test does not eliminate this cause.

Use a USB Ethernet adapter as a controlled test

  1. Leave the Hytale server, world and client configuration unchanged.
  2. Connect a USB Ethernet adapter to the Windows computer that cannot load the world. Connect that adapter to the router with an Ethernet cable rather than using the computer’s built-in network device.
  3. Reconnect to the same server and wait through the same loading sequence.
  4. Compare the result with the original adapter. If terrain loads normally through the USB adapter, the built-in adapter or its driver path is implicated. If nothing changes, return the adapter to its original state and continue with the server-side checks below.

This is a diagnostic isolation step, not a universal fix. It cannot repair insufficient server RAM, a slow disk, malformed world data or a plugin that suppresses generation.

Change the documented advanced settings one at a time

When the USB adapter works, use Windows’ adapter properties on the affected built-in device. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, open the device’s Properties, and select the Advanced tab. Change one setting, reconnect to the Hytale server, and record the result before changing another.

  1. Disable Priority & VLAN. Apply the change and test Hytale.
  2. If the symptom remains, restore or keep the first change as appropriate for your test, then disable Recv. Segment Coalescing (IPv4) and test again.
  3. If necessary, apply the corresponding Recv. Segment Coalescing (IPv6) change and retest.

Hypixel Studios also lists additional energy-saving and offload options, but describes that broader settings block as invasive. Do not change a large group at once: you lose the ability to identify the setting that matters and may reduce performance or power efficiency for other applications. Keep a note of every original value so you can reverse the experiment.

2. Reduce view distance before chasing corruption

Hytale’s server manual recommends a maximum view distance of 12 chunks (384 blocks). The loaded area grows in two dimensions, so the cost is multiplicative rather than linear. Hytale’s hardware guidance gives the concrete example that increasing the distance from 192 to 384 blocks doubles the distance but loads and simulates four times the world area.

View-distance example Block distance Relative loaded area What to watch
Lower reference 192 blocks 1× reference area RAM, CPU and generation latency
Higher reference 384 blocks 4× the 192-block area RAM headroom, CPU saturation and garbage-collection pauses
Official recommended maximum 384 blocks (12 chunks) Use as an upper baseline, not a guarantee for every player count Actual players and how independently they explore

Apply a conservative setting and observe

  1. Stop the server cleanly and back up its configuration.
  2. Set the server’s maximum view distance to 12 chunks or lower while diagnosing. If several players explore in separate directions, use a lower value until resource use is stable.
  3. Start the server and watch RAM and CPU while one player remains near the spawn area and another explores. Note whether terrain begins appearing promptly at the lower distance.
  4. Increase the value only after the server has sustained the player count and exploration pattern you actually expect. A setting that works for one nearby player may fail when several players generate different regions at once.

Java’s -Xmx value must leave enough memory for the operating system and other server processes. The manual calls for tuning it to the real player count and exploration pattern rather than selecting a value from a generic recommendation. If RAM is exhausted, the operating system may page to disk and chunk generation can look like a network stall; if CPU is saturated, new terrain can arrive in bursts even when the connection itself is healthy.

3. Verify Java, the server layout and current assets

The supported server baseline is Java 25. Running another Java major version, starting the wrong JAR, or launching without the asset archive can produce failures that look like missing terrain.

Check the expected files and launch form

Run the server from the expected Server/ layout with Assets.zip available. The normal launch form in the manual is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

java -XX:AOTCache=HytaleServer.aot -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip

  1. Confirm that the Java executable used by your service, batch file or panel is Java 25, not merely the version installed system-wide.
  2. Confirm that HytaleServer.jar, HytaleServer.aot and Assets.zip are the files belonging to the same server release.
  3. Start from the directory that contains the expected Server/ contents, or use explicit paths consistently. A command that silently points at an older copy can leave clients and servers on different builds.
  4. Use Hytale’s official downloader or bootstrap update flow when binaries or assets are stale. Do not copy only the JAR while leaving an older asset archive in place.

Match client and server protocol versions

Update 7 changed chunk-environment packets and states that clients and servers must use matching protocol versions. Update the client and the server together after a release. If the failure began immediately after updating one side, stop troubleshooting view distance until both ends report the same release. Do not open a world written in a newer chunk format with an older server; make a backup before any rollback experiment.

4. Check QUIC transport and the forwarded port

Hytale’s server traffic uses QUIC over UDP. The server manual specifies forwarding UDP port 5520, or the UDP port you deliberately selected for a custom configuration. Forwarding only TCP 5520 does not satisfy that requirement.

  1. Check the server configuration for the actual listening port.
  2. Allow that UDP port through the host firewall and forward the same UDP port on the router to the server machine.
  3. Make sure an old port-forward rule is not sending traffic to a different host or a previous server installation.
  4. After changing the rule, restart the server and test from the normal client connection. Keep the Windows adapter test separate: a successful external connection does not prove that the built-in adapter’s QUIC handling is healthy.

If local players can connect but remote players cannot, prioritize the UDP forwarding and firewall path. If every player connects but terrain is delayed, transport may be working and resource, storage or generation checks become more valuable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check SSD space, I/O and the world directory

Hypixel Studios reports approximately 27 KB per 32×32 chunk and recommends an SSD with at least 10 GB of free space; it describes 20 GB free as a safer amount. Those figures are storage guidance, not a promise that a particular world will stay below a fixed size. Generation, temporary files and other server data also need room.

Measure the storage condition before deleting anything

  • Check the free space on the volume that contains the server and its worlds, not only the system drive.
  • Use an SSD when possible. A nearly full or slow disk can make chunk generation and save operations appear frozen even though the process is still running.
  • Watch disk activity while a player explores. Sustained saturation or long pauses point to I/O pressure rather than a QUIC adapter problem.
  • Keep at least 10 GB free; 20 GB is the safer target stated by the hardware guidance.

Back up the playable worlds

Playable worlds are under universe/worlds/. Each world includes a config.json with sections including WorldGen, ChunkStorage and save/unload settings.

  2. Copy the entire universe/worlds/ directory to a separate disk or clearly named backup location.
  3. Record which world and coordinates show the failure, plus the server version that created the backup.
  4. Inspect configuration only after the backup exists. Avoid deleting a world, a region or a chunk as a first response; deletion removes evidence and can turn a recoverable storage issue into permanent data loss.

Do not infer corruption merely from a delayed first load. A large view distance, independent exploration by several players or an overloaded disk can all delay generation without damaging the world.

6. Repair one bad column on Update 7 or newer

Use targeted repair only when logs or a reproducible test identify one column or a small location. Update 7 adds two administrator commands: /chunk height dumps a column heightmap, and /chunk fixheight rebuilds that column into a fresh backend.

Safe procedure

  1. Stop normal player activity and make the complete universe/worlds/ backup described above.
  2. Confirm that the server is running Update 7 or a later release that provides the commands.
  3. Reproduce the problem and record the exact world and coordinates. Do not run a repair across an entire world simply because several distant areas load slowly.
  4. Run /chunk height for the implicated column and save the output with your notes.
  5. If the heightmap is the specific fault, run /chunk fixheight for that column. Allow the server to complete the rebuild, then reconnect and test the same location.
  6. If the rebuild does not help, restore the backup or continue with version, storage and plugin diagnosis rather than repeatedly rewriting the column.

The command is a focused repair, not a substitute for fixing a full disk, an incompatible server build or a plugin that is preventing generation. Keep the backup until the repaired world has been loaded, explored and saved successfully.

Correct an out-of-range view-radius value

Update 7 clamps MaxViewRadius values outside the supported range of 1–32 and emits a warning instead of refusing to boot. Treat the warning as a configuration error: set a deliberate value within that range, and remember that the server manual’s recommended maximum is 12 chunks (384 blocks). Relying on automatic clamping can conceal an accidental value and make later performance diagnosis harder.

7. Isolate plugins and explicit chunk-request flags

Hytale exposes chunk request flags including HIGH_PRIORITY, NO_GENERATE and NO_LOAD. A plugin that requests NO_LOAD or NO_GENERATE can intentionally prevent the behavior an administrator expects, even though the base server is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On a backup copy of the server and world, stop the production instance.
  2. Disable all plugins and reproduce the same coordinates and player actions.
  3. If chunks load with plugins disabled, re-enable plugins in small groups until the failure returns.
  4. Inspect the plugin that reintroduces the problem for explicit chunk-request flags, custom world-generation hooks and unload logic.
  5. Test the corrected plugin on the backup before putting it back into the live world.

If the failure remains with every plugin disabled, stop treating plugin flags as the primary cause and return to the adapter, resource, runtime, transport and storage branches.

A practical order for a live server

Use this sequence when you need the shortest safe path without destroying data:

  1. Ask whether singleplayer works and whether the failure affects every location or one column.
  2. For the Windows singleplayer-works pattern, test a USB Ethernet adapter. If it fixes the connection, change Priority & VLAN, then the IPv4 and IPv6 receive-segment-coalescing settings one at a time.
  3. For delayed terrain affecting several players, lower the maximum view distance to 12 chunks or less and observe RAM, CPU and disk activity during exploration.
  4. Confirm Java 25, the expected Server/ layout, matching HytaleServer.jar and Assets.zip, and synchronized client/server versions.
  5. Verify the configured UDP port, forwarding UDP 5520 when that is the selected port.
  6. Check SSD health and free space, preserving a copy of universe/worlds/ before edits.
  7. For one reproducible column on Update 7+, use /chunk height and, only after the backup, /chunk fixheight.
  8. Reproduce with plugins disabled when plugin involvement is plausible.

Document the result of each test. A change that affects only one adapter, one coordinate, one update boundary or one plugin is valuable evidence; changing several variables simultaneously is not.
