First check whether the problem is limited to one game, affects several apps, or prevents the app store from opening. Then follow the matching steps for your iPhone or iPad, or Android device. Start with connection, storage and restart checks; reserve store-data resets for later because they can remove settings or saved information.
Identify what is failing
A stalled or pending download does not, by itself, identify the cause. The pattern helps choose the next check:
- One game fails: check the game’s store listing for device availability. If the listing says it is unavailable for your device, Google says it cannot be downloaded on that device through that listing.
- Several apps fail: check the connection, device and store before trying advanced store troubleshooting.
- The store will not open: on Android, use Google’s Play Store app troubleshooting after the basic checks. On iPhone or iPad, try Apple’s download steps and contact Apple Support if the issue continues.
- The download is pending or stalled: check the connection, then retry after the basic steps below.
Google organizes its advice into basic checks, problems with one app, problems with multiple apps, and problems with the Play Store app. Basic troubleshooting, one app, multiple apps, and Play Store app troubleshooting.
Try the low-risk checks first
Android: connection, storage, updates and restart
- Check your connection. Make sure Wi-Fi or mobile data is working reliably. If you can, try Wi-Fi.
- Check free space. Open Settings > Storage and review the available space. Google notes that less than 1 GB free may be a sign of low storage; it is not a universal minimum for every game. Google says low storage can prevent apps from downloading and installing.
- Check for Android system updates. Install an available update, then try the download again.
- Close and reopen Google Play Store. Retry the download.
- Restart the device. A restart is a useful basic check when a download will not finish.
- Check date and time. In your device’s settings, confirm the date, time and time zone. If automatic date/time and time zone are both off, enable them. Google says that if both automatic settings are already on, date and time probably are not the cause.

iPhone or iPad: update, billing prompt, queue and restart
- Check for an app update. If the game is already installed and will not update, look for an available update in the App Store.
- Address any payment or billing message. Apple says a valid payment method might be required even to download a free app. Follow the message shown in your account or App Store.
- Prioritize the download. If the game is waiting in the queue, touch and hold its app icon on the Home Screen, then choose Prioritize Download if that option appears.
- Restart the device and try again.
- Confirm your age if prompted. Some regions require age confirmation for certain apps.
These steps follow Apple’s guidance for downloading or updating apps, dated March 30, 2026. If they do not resolve the problem, Apple advises contacting Apple Support.
If only one Android game will not install
Check whether the game supports your device
Open the game’s Google Play listing and check whether it says the app is available for your device. If Google Play lists it as unavailable, Google says that listing cannot be used to download the game on that device. Do not assume a stuck download is a device-compatibility problem until you have checked the listing.

Consider reinstalling only after checking save data
Google lists uninstalling and reinstalling the affected app as a troubleshooting option. Before removing a game that is already installed, check the game’s own support information or account settings: local progress may not be preserved unless the game’s save system backs it up. The Google Play guidance does not guarantee how an individual game stores saves.

If several Android apps will not download
After the basic checks, Google recommends clearing the Google Play Store cache and storage/data. The path and wording vary by Android device, but you can usually find Google Play Store in the device’s app settings and open its storage options. Clear the cache first; use the storage/data option only when you are ready to reset store settings.
Clearing Play Store data may remove settings such as parental controls and password protection, and you may have to agree to the Play Store Terms of Service again. Check and restore relevant settings afterward.

Leave Google Play services data for a later step
Google advises against clearing Google Play services data unless other troubleshooting has failed. Doing so may remove saved information such as passwords and payment cards and require you to sign in again. This is a broader-impact step than clearing the Play Store cache, so do not use it as an initial fix.

If Google Play Store itself will not open
Try the basic connection, storage, update and restart checks first. Google’s advanced guide includes reinstalling Play Store updates, removing and re-adding the Google Account, and clearing Play Store cache or data. Account changes and data clearing can affect saved information or settings, so follow Google’s instructions carefully and make sure you can sign back in before changing account settings.
Google includes a factory reset only as a final escalation. Do not treat it as a routine download fix: back up important data and contact device or Google support before considering it. See Google’s Play Store app troubleshooting guide.
Check family and content restrictions
For a child’s iPhone or iPad
Ask the family organizer or parent/guardian to check whether the download requires Ask to Buy approval, whether app installation is restricted, or whether age-based content limits block the game. Apple’s controls and defaults can vary by software version, age and region; use the family settings rather than trying to bypass them. For Android
If an age or family restriction appears to block a game, check with the family manager and review the game’s Play Store listing. Clearing Play Store data can remove parental-control settings, so check those settings afterward if you use that troubleshooting step. Google’s cited guidance does not provide a single diagnostic path for every Family Link restriction.
