If your Nintendo 3DS says “SD Card Could Not Be Read” or “Could Not Detect an SD Card,” first check that the card matches your console model. Original 3DS-family systems use full-size SD cards; New Nintendo 3DS-family systems use microSD cards. Then power the console off, reseat and inspect the card, and test with a second compatible card before formatting or replacing anything.
Check that the card matches your 3DS model
The original and New Nintendo 3DS families use different card sizes. Nintendo’s published compatibility guidance supports SD and SDHC cards for original models, and microSD and microSDHC cards for New models. It does not list SDXC or microSDXC as compatible.
| Console family | Card format | Nintendo-listed capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS | Full-size SD or SDHC; a microSD card in an SD adapter can be used | SD up to 2 GB; SDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB |
| New Nintendo 3DS, New 3DS XL, and New 2DS XL | microSD or microSDHC | microSD up to 2 GB; microSDHC from 4 GB through 32 GB |
These are Nintendo’s stated supported categories, not a guarantee for every third-party card. A larger card is not automatically a better fit: confirm the model, physical size, and card standard before troubleshooting further. See Nintendo’s SD and microSD compatibility guidance.
Reseat and inspect the card safely
- Turn the 3DS completely off. Nintendo instructs: “Do not remove or insert SD cards while the system is on.”
- Remove the card and check it. Look for visible damage to the card body or contacts, then reinsert it carefully so it is seated correctly.
- Check the lock tab on a full-size SD card. A locked tab prevents saving or erasing. microSD cards do not have a lock switch.
- Turn the system on and check whether it recognizes the card.
On a New Nintendo 3DS XL, the microSD card is behind the battery cover. Nintendo specifies a size #0 cross-head screwdriver to remove that cover. Follow the appropriate steps for your exact model in Nintendo’s “SD Card Could Not Be Read” instructions.

Back up readable data before changing the card
If a computer can still read the card, copy its contents somewhere safe before attempting repairs, formatting, or replacement. Formatting erases the card, so it is not a sensible first step when the 3DS cannot detect it. Nintendo’s support index points users to the SD Association’s SD Memory Card Formatter for formatting cards used with Nintendo products, but formatting should come only after protecting any readable data. See Nintendo’s 3DS accessories support index.
Use a second card to identify the likely fault
Cross-testing is the clearest way to distinguish a failing card from a console-side problem. Use a known-good card that matches the 3DS model, and, if possible, test the suspect card in another compatible 3DS-family system. Change one thing at a time and note which device recognizes each card.

| Test result | What it suggests | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A known-good compatible card works in your 3DS; the suspect card fails in another compatible system too | The suspect card is likely faulty. | Replace the card. Back up its contents first if it is still readable. |
| The suspect card works in another system, but your 3DS cannot read it | The issue may be with this console’s card slot or with the interaction between that card and the console. | Try a second known-good compatible card before concluding the slot is faulty. If the issue persists, seek a service assessment. |
| More than one known-good compatible card fails in your 3DS | A console-side problem is more likely than a single bad card. | Seek a service assessment. |
| The card is readable on a computer, but the 3DS does not recognize it | The card may be incompatible, damaged, or not making reliable contact; computer readability alone does not establish 3DS compatibility. | Check model and card standard, then use the cross-tests above before considering a replacement. |
Nintendo’s general SD and microSD troubleshooting guidance recommends replacing a card when another card works in the console or when the suspect card fails in another system.

- For an original 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS, choose a full-size SDHC card of up to 32 GB under Nintendo’s published guidance. A microSD card in an SD adapter is also an option, but the adapter adds another possible contact or fit issue.
- For a New 3DS, New 3DS XL, or New 2DS XL, choose a microSDHC card of up to 32 GB under Nintendo’s published guidance.
- If a damaged or lost card is replaced, Nintendo warns that downloaded content may need to be downloaded again and save data may be lost. Copy data first whenever the card remains readable.
Nintendo’s current US troubleshooting page lists the New Nintendo 2DS XL for service and says it no longer services the original 3DS, original 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, or 2DS.
