Next, compare its behavior docked and undocked. If it works wirelessly but is not recognized while attached, use Nintendo’s separate attachment troubleshooting path instead.
First identify the connection problem
These steps are for Joy-Con 2 wireless pairing problems and repeated wireless disconnections. A controller that works wirelessly but is not recognized while physically attached has a different issue; follow Nintendo’s attached Joy-Con 2 recognition troubleshooting. Joy-Con 2 are designed for Switch 2; original Joy-Con are a separate controller family with separate troubleshooting guidance.
Update the console and controller, then restart
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings, scroll to System, and select System Update. If the console is already current, restart it.
- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers to check for a Joy-Con 2 controller update. If multiple controllers are paired, Nintendo says they are updated one at a time.
Nintendo recommends checking for updates before testing detached use. Use the console’s update check rather than relying on a firmware version number. See Nintendo’s repeated connection/disconnection guidance.
Reset the Joy-Con 2 and pair it again
- Press the affected Joy-Con 2’s SYNC button once.
- Press another button, such as A, to pair it again.
- If pairing from the menu, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and follow the on-screen prompt for the controller type and how you intend to hold it.
If more than one Joy-Con 2 is affected, reset each one separately. Nintendo’s UK support instructions recommend this reset-and-pair procedure for repeated disconnections: Joy-Con 2 repeatedly connects/disconnects.

Compare docked and undocked play
Test whether the fault happens only in TV mode or also when the console is out of the dock. Nintendo’s Americas guidance says to test the console docked, confirm that the dock is connected with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, then remove the console from the dock and test again. Nintendo says the cable supplied with Switch 2 is Ultra High Speed.
- Works undocked, disconnects only while docked: continue with Nintendo’s dock and connection guidance. That pattern alone does not establish that the controller needs replacement.
- Disconnects both docked and undocked: the dock is less likely to be the distinguishing factor; proceed to the charge check only if there are power symptoms, then contact Nintendo if the issue persists.

Check charging if the controller will not power on or stay powered
A charge check is relevant when the controller will not power on or shows other power symptoms; it is not a general fix for wireless interference or pairing failure. Nintendo estimates a full Joy-Con 2 charge takes approximately three-and-a-half hours. Attached controllers charge when the console is connected to its AC adapter and is powered on or in Sleep Mode. Battery duration can be shorter depending on the software and functions being used. These are Nintendo’s support estimates, not a guarantee of runtime: Joy-Con 2 controller power issues.
- Use the correct Switch 2 AC adapter and leave the console connected to it while powered on or in Sleep Mode.
- If available, compare charging while attached to the console with charging in a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010).
- If the Joy-Con 2 charges in the grip but not while attached, Nintendo says the console may have an issue and may need service.
When to contact Nintendo for repair
If updating, resetting and re-pairing, and the relevant dock or charging checks do not resolve the wireless problem, follow Nintendo’s support or repair pathway. For a controller that is not recognized while attached, detach and reattach it a couple of times and, if possible, test another Joy-Con 2. Nintendo says that if another controller works, the affected controller needs repair; if no Joy-Con 2 works, the console and affected controller may need repair. Use the separate attached recognition steps for that symptom.
