If a PC game crashes on launch or runs poorly, start with a restart, check the game’s system requirements, update Windows and graphics drivers from official sources, and verify the game files in its launcher. Then test for software conflicts and adjust graphics settings if performance is the problem. The right fix depends on whether one game closes, gameplay slows down, or the whole PC freezes or restarts.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing settings, note when the problem occurs and how widely it affects the PC. A game that closes before its menu presents a different clue from one that starts normally and stutters later. A blue screen, forced restart, or shutdown points beyond the game itself.
- Does one game fail, or do several games?
- Does it close before the menu, during loading, or after you have been playing?
- Is there an exact error message?
- Does the game process close, or does Windows freeze, restart, or shut down?
- Did the problem begin after a game patch, Windows update, driver update, or other change?
Record the game and version, launcher, Windows version, CPU, graphics card (GPU), memory, graphics-driver version, and recent changes. Many different hardware and software issues can cause an immediate crash, so the symptom alone does not establish a cause; Steam likewise describes launch failures as having multiple possible causes (Steam’s game-crash troubleshooting guide).
Try these launch-failure checks in order
1. Restart the PC
Restart Windows, then try the game again before making other changes. A fresh restart is a useful first check in Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance (Steam Support).

2. Compare the PC with the game’s requirements
Check the current requirements on the game’s official store page or support site. Compare the listed CPU, GPU, memory, and operating-system requirements with your PC. A system that only just meets the stated minimum may still have trouble launching or running well, as Steam notes in its guidance for games that crash on launch. Requirements are specific to each game and can change, so generic hardware cutoffs are not a reliable substitute.
3. Update Windows and graphics drivers through official sources
Install pending Windows updates. Then check the GPU maker’s official site—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—or the computer manufacturer’s support page for a suitable graphics-driver update. On laptops, the manufacturer may provide device-specific drivers. Steam says outdated graphics drivers can affect performance even when the GPU meets or exceeds a game’s stated requirement (Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide; Steam’s driver guidance).
If the problem began immediately after an update, record the driver or update version and check the game or GPU maker’s support guidance before attempting a rollback. Avoid downloading drivers from unofficial sites.

4. Verify or repair the game files
A damaged or missing game file can prevent a title from launching. Use the launcher’s built-in verify or repair option; for Steam, follow its current instructions for verifying installed game files. If you use another launcher, consult that platform’s own instructions because menus and labels differ. Steam advises against running file verification while another system-intensive process is active.

Close non-essential applications and overlays temporarily, then try the game. If that changes nothing, restore them and test a different item rather than changing several settings at once. This makes it easier to tell what affected the result. Steam recommends disabling non-essential software when troubleshooting launch problems (Steam Support).
If a persistent failure still suggests background interference, a clean-start test can help narrow it down. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions rather than older operating-system-specific procedures (Microsoft: troubleshoot game crashes and stop errors).

Improve poor performance during play
Reduce demanding graphics settings
Open the game’s video or graphics menu and lower resolution and demanding options such as shadows or effects. Apply one or two changes, test the same area of the game, and adjust further only if needed. EA also recommends lowering in-game graphics settings for poor performance (EA graphics troubleshooting).
Lowering resolution or using a particular graphics API launch option may help some games, but those options are game-specific—not universal fixes. Steam’s advice about shader detail and windowed mode, for example, is specifically for some situations involving integrated graphics (Steam performance guidance).

Close unnecessary applications and disable unneeded startup programs, then check whether performance changes. Keep essential security software running. Steam recommends stopping unnecessary applications when investigating poor game performance (Steam Support).

Check airflow if performance worsens under load
If the game starts acceptably but slows or stutters after the PC has been working hard, check that vents are unobstructed and look for dust around vents and fans. Poor ventilation and accumulated dust can contribute to heat-related performance problems, according to Steam’s hardware and performance guidance. If cleaning is needed, follow the computer maker’s instructions rather than opening or cleaning components in a way it does not recommend.
When a DirectX error appears
Use Microsoft’s DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) to inspect DirectX details and gather information when the game names a DirectX or graphics-API requirement or error. A missing required DirectX version can stop a game working properly. Microsoft directs Windows users to Windows Update for the current DirectX version available for their installation; do not download DirectX from third-party sites (Microsoft’s DirectX guidance).

A blue screen, forced restart, or shutdown is a PC-level stability problem, not just a game closing. Use Windows or computer-manufacturer diagnostics, and consider a qualified technician if the issue repeats. Heat may be one contributing factor when performance has already slowed or stuttered under load, but that symptom alone does not prove overheating (Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide; Steam’s hardware guidance).

What to send the game’s support team
If the steps above do not resolve a game-specific failure, contact the developer or publisher with information that can narrow down the problem:
- Game title and version, launcher, and Windows version
- Exact error text, or a note that no error appeared
- Whether it closes before the menu, during play, or after a period of normal performance
- CPU, GPU, memory, and graphics-driver version
- When the problem began and any recent game, Windows, or driver changes
- Checks already tried and what happened after each one
Steam recommends contacting the game’s developer for in-depth help when its general launch troubleshooting does not solve the problem (Steam Support). If several games trigger full-PC restarts or stop errors, include that system-wide pattern when seeking manufacturer or technician help.
