Start by checking the symptom: a stuck download usually points to the download queue, service status, or storage; a padlock or missing game points to account, membership, catalog availability, or licenses; and a game that installs but will not start needs launch-specific troubleshooting. Work through the steps below for your console, then use the exact error code if the problem persists.
First check your account, membership, and game access
Make sure the console is signed in to the account that has access to the game. If access comes through PlayStation Plus, confirm that the membership is active and that its plan includes the benefit you are trying to use. For a Game Catalog title, check that it is still available in the catalog; a game appearing there previously does not guarantee that it remains available. If another account owns or shares the game, check the console’s sharing setup: Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5, or primary-console activation on PS4. If the account and entitlement look right but the game is still locked or missing, restore licenses.
Restore licenses on PS5
Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the affected game if prompted, and follow the on-screen steps.

Restore licenses on PS4
Go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses and follow the on-screen steps. PlayStation Support says restoring licenses “won’t affect your data.” See PlayStation’s license-restoration guide.
If the download will not start or is stuck
Try these steps in order on PS5 or PS4. Check the PlayStation Store download troubleshooting guide for Sony’s console-specific instructions.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- Open the console’s download list, select the game, and pause the download. Resume it and check whether it progresses.
- If it remains stuck, cancel and delete the queued download. Find the eligible game in your Game Library and start the download again.
- Check PlayStation Network service status. If Sony reports a relevant service issue, wait for service to return before retrying.
- On PS5, check for available system software updates and confirm there is enough storage. Compare the free space shown under Settings > Storage with the space required on the game’s product page.
If the download still fails, note any displayed error code and use Sony’s error-code lookup rather than trying unrelated fixes.
If the game downloads but will not launch
Restart the console first. Then confirm that the account still has access to the game and try restoring licenses using the path for your console above. PlayStation’s game launch troubleshooting guide also recommends deleting and re-downloading the game and installing the latest system software.

PS5: move a game off USB storage if needed
If the PS5 game is installed on USB extended storage, move it to the console’s internal storage and try launching it again. If ordinary steps do not resolve the problem, Sony lists clearing the cache and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode; reinstalling system software is a later troubleshooting step. Follow Sony’s current Safe Mode instructions carefully.
PS4: retry the basic launch checks
On PS4, restart the console, restore licenses, update system software, and delete then re-download the game if it still will not start. Use Sony’s launch guide for the current steps for your console and any error shown.

Optional network check
If you have re-downloaded the game and suspect a connection problem, Sony suggests trying a wired connection if possible. Connect the console to the router with Ethernet and retry. This is only a network check: it cannot restore an expired catalog listing, activate a membership, repair an entitlement, or resolve a PlayStation service outage.

If the official troubleshooting steps do not fix the problem, contact PlayStation Support and provide the exact error code or message, what happens when you try to download or launch, and the steps that reproduce the issue. Include the date and time of the access attempt and, if possible, a screenshot or video. This helps distinguish a download failure from an account, license, installation, or launch problem.
