If your PS5 controller’s R1 button feels stuck or won’t spring back, start with a cautious exterior check, then try Sony’s general controller reset and software-update steps. If the button still catches, the next options are a revision-appropriate mechanical inspection or PlayStation Repairs. Resetting is not a proven fix for physical binding.
R1 is the right shoulder button; R2 is the separate right trigger. These steps apply to the DualSense wireless controller.
Step 1: Power down and clean the outside cautiously
- Turn off the controller and disconnect it. This avoids handling it while it is in use.
- Inspect the edge of R1. Look for visible dust or debris around the button perimeter. Do not force the button or probe the gap with a sharp object.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Sony’s manual does not give an R1-specific cleaning procedure, so keep this to gentle exterior care. Do not pour or spray cleaner into the seam.
Sony warns: “Do not use thinner, benzine, or alcohol.” Avoid wipes or chemical cloths containing those substances, too. An exterior wipe may remove visible surface dirt, but it cannot be expected to free an internal part that is binding.
Step 2: Reset the controller and check PS5 system software
Sony recommends resetting the DualSense as a general troubleshooting step. This can help with a general controller issue, but Sony does not identify it as a mechanical cure for an R1 button caught by debris, deformation, or damage.

Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press and hold the small reset button on the back of the controller for at least five seconds. Sony’s instruction is: “Use a pin or a similar tool (not included) to press and hold the reset button for at least 5 seconds.”
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable, then press the PS button.
- If you can operate the console, check for and install available PS5 system software updates.

Step 3: Choose careful inspection or official repair
If R1 still catches after the exterior check and general troubleshooting, a mechanical issue may need inspection or service. Choose based on your repair experience, tools, confidence about the controller revision, and whether the button or mechanism appears damaged.

| DIY removal and inspection | Experienced repairers with suitable tools and a confirmed controller revision. | Removing a button can damage clips or the button; instructions and parts may differ by revision. If the mechanism is damaged, cleaning alone may not help. |

For experienced repairers: verify the revision before removing R1
iFixit documents removing R1 with the flat end of a spudger after powering down and disconnecting the controller. Cover the button while releasing it: it can eject. The instructions describe button removal or replacement, not a guaranteed cure from cleaning.
Check the controller’s FCC ID before following a guide or ordering a part. iFixit says its v2 instructions apply to FCC IDs ending in A; IDs ending in 1 have internal differences. Do not assume a button or guide fits until the revision is confirmed. See iFixit’s R1 button replacement guide and its DualSense button guide for revision-related guidance.
