A “run time error” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The exact wording, number, named executable or DLL, Windows build, and moment of failure determine the right fix. A missing Visual C++ component, an application defect, a failed prerequisite installer, a device driver, damaged hardware, or another program can all produce a similar message. Copy the complete dialog before closing it, then follow the matching path below.
- Missing DLL at launch: reinstall the application or its required prerequisite.
- Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library dialog: install or repair the supported Visual C++ Redistributable generation and architecture required by the application.
- Redistributable installer failure: collect the installer logs and investigate files in use, security software interference, policy restrictions, or corrupted files.
- Recurring crash or stop code: treat it as a broader stability problem involving software, drivers, or hardware.
Start by recording the error exactly
Do not rely on the phrase “run time error” alone. Before restarting or reinstalling anything, copy the full dialog text and numeric code. A screenshot is useful, but selectable text is better when you later contact the application developer or Microsoft support.

- Record the application and executable. Write down the program name and, if shown, the executable file such as
game.exeor a launcher process. - Record every named DLL or module. A filename such as
vcruntime, msvcp, or another library narrows the diagnosis more than the generic heading. - Note when it fails. Distinguish a crash at launch from a crash while loading a level, joining a match, installing an update, or closing the game.
- Write down recent changes. Include a Windows update, game patch, newly installed mod, driver change, peripheral, memory upgrade, or security-policy change.
- Capture your Windows edition and build. Also note whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit when the vendor documents that information.
- Preserve supporting reports. Event Viewer entries, the application’s crash report, and any stop-code or dump details can identify a failing module.
This record prevents a common mistake: installing a random library because the dialog contains the word “runtime.” The same wording can describe unrelated failures.

“A .dll was not found” when the program starts
A message that names a missing library usually means the application cannot locate a component it expects. The file may be absent, damaged, the wrong architecture, or unavailable because an installation was incomplete. Microsoft documents this pattern and notes that reinstalling the application may resolve it.

Use the game or application publisher’s installer first. A launcher repair or reinstall can restore private files and prerequisites that a standalone DLL download cannot. Do not obtain individual DLL files from random download sites: the file may be modified, mismatched, or bundled with unwanted software, and it does not repair the underlying installation.
“Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library” appears
The heading identifies the family of runtime code used by many Windows applications, not necessarily a defect in Microsoft’s library. Microsoft states: “Even though each message refers to the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library, it doesn’t mean there’s a bug in the library.” The game may have a programming error, a damaged installation, or a prerequisite mismatch.
When the evidence points to a missing or damaged Visual C++ component, use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable download and the generation and architecture requested by the application vendor. Microsoft defines the package as software that “installs Microsoft C and C++ Runtime libraries.” Do not assume that installing one architecture or one generation covers every program.

The Visual C++ Redistributable installer will not complete
An installer failure is a separate problem from a game crash. Microsoft recommends collecting the redistributable installer logs and searching them for Error, Failed, or System Error. Documented causes include files being in use, antivirus interference, group-policy restrictions, and corrupted files.
Close the game, launcher, and other programs that might hold the runtime files, then retry. If the same failure returns, preserve the logs rather than repeatedly running the installer. An administrator or IT team may need to review policy, security software, or file-system corruption.
A recurring crash, restart, or Windows stop code
If Windows itself restarts, displays a blue-screen stop code, or crashes across several applications, do not treat it as a single game prerequisite. Microsoft says unexpected restarts can result from hardware, a device driver, or software. In Microsoft’s current troubleshooting guidance, 70% of analyzed Windows stop errors were attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% had unknown causes. Those figures describe the analyzed stop-error set, not the frequency of all runtime messages or a guarantee about your PC.
Recent hardware, a graphics or audio driver, unstable memory, and a faulty peripheral are possible directions. The stop code and any identified module determine which one deserves priority.
The program alone crashes while Windows remains stable
An application-only crash can be a defect in the program, a damaged local installation, an incompatible update, or a conflict with another component. Capture the application version, exact reproduction steps, and crash module. If other programs work normally, avoid making broad system changes until the publisher’s repair or support procedure has been tried.
Apply the manual fixes in a safe order
1. Restart once and reproduce the failure
Restart Windows, allow any pending restart to finish, and try the same action once. A process left in memory or an update waiting for reboot can create a transient failure. If the error returns, record whether it appears at the same point; consistent reproduction is valuable evidence.

2. Install current Windows updates
Open Settings, choose Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install the updates offered for your edition. Restart when requested and test the application again. Updates can address operating-system components and compatibility issues, but they cannot correct an application’s own programming defect.
3. Repair the Visual C++ prerequisite from an official source
- Identify the application’s required Visual C++ generation and architecture from its installation instructions or support page.
- Download the supported redistributable from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Choose the architecture that matches the application and the package specified by its vendor. A 32-bit application can require the 32-bit package even on 64-bit Windows.
- Run the installer, accept the repair or install option it presents, and restart if requested.
- Launch the application again and note whether the same code, DLL, and point of failure remain.
If the publisher bundles a prerequisite in its own installer, follow that procedure instead of substituting an unrelated package. Microsoft directs application users to the application vendor for guidance about which runtime version their software needs.
4. Reinstall the application or use its repair option
For a missing DLL, incomplete update, or damaged game files, use the launcher’s built-in verify or repair function when available. If the publisher provides no repair function, uninstall and reinstall through the publisher’s supported installer. Keep saved games and configuration files only if the vendor documents where they are stored and how to preserve them.
Reinstalling is most appropriate when the error names a file belonging to the application or appears immediately after an interrupted patch. It is less useful for a system-wide stop code or a redistributable installer that fails before the game is installed.
5. Handle a failed redistributable installation using its evidence
- Close the affected application, launcher, editors, and background tools that may be using runtime files.
- Run the supported redistributable installer again with the required administrator approval.
- If it fails, collect the installer logs as Microsoft recommends.
- Search the logs for Error, Failed, and System Error, and record the surrounding entries.
- Check whether a security product blocked the operation, a group policy prevents installation, files are locked, or corruption is reported. Do not weaken security controls permanently; involve an administrator or IT team when policy or protection software is managed centrally.
Share the relevant log entries with the application vendor or Microsoft support. Repeated blind retries do not provide new information and can make it harder to identify which attempt produced the useful log.
6. Investigate recurring crashes and stop codes
- Remove newly added hardware temporarily. Disconnect a recently installed peripheral or component and test again, following the manufacturer’s safe-removal guidance.
- Start Windows in Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers. If the crash disappears there, a normal-startup driver or service becomes more likely.
- Update or roll back the implicated driver. Use the hardware manufacturer’s supported package when the stop code or dump identifies a device. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back to the previous working version is a reasonable diagnostic step.
- Use dump analysis when a module is identified. Preserve the dump and stop code rather than deleting reports. Deeper analysis can distinguish a driver failure from an application or hardware fault.
Microsoft’s guidance specifically recommends updates, removing newly added hardware, Safe Mode, and deeper dump or driver analysis for recurring Windows crashes. A driver change should be tied to evidence from the stop code, module, or timing; changing unrelated drivers at random makes the result harder to interpret.

7. Test the application after each meaningful change
Change one category at a time: Windows updates, the required redistributable, the application installation, or a driver. Reproduce the same action after each change and record the result. This creates a reversible path and shows support staff which intervention changed the behavior.

What not to do
- Do not download a single DLL from an unverified website. A matching filename does not prove that the binary is genuine, compatible, or complete.
- Do not assume the runtime library is defective. Microsoft’s explanation makes clear that the wording can point to an application bug or another condition.
- Do not install every Visual C++ package at random. Match the application’s documented generation and architecture, and keep the installer result for your records.
- Do not disable antivirus or policy controls as a permanent fix. Security software or group policy can interfere with an installer, but the correct response is to identify the blocked operation and involve the responsible administrator.
- Do not buy hardware before a fault is identified. A stop code may involve a driver or software, and a runtime dialog alone does not establish a hardware defect.
Prepare an effective support request
Escalation is faster when the recipient can reproduce and classify the failure. Include:
- The complete error text and numeric code, copied rather than paraphrased.
- The application name, executable, version, and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The named DLL, module, stop code, or crash-report entry.
- Your Windows edition and build, plus the date of the last update or hardware change.
- The exact action that triggers the failure and whether it happens every time.
- Which steps you tried, in order, and what changed after each step.
- Redistributable installer logs with the surrounding lines containing Error, Failed, or System Error, when installation was involved.
- Dump or Event Viewer details for recurring Windows crashes.
When reporting a toolset problem, Microsoft advises describing the exact runtime behavior and the behavior you expected. That distinction helps separate a reproducible application defect from a damaged prerequisite or system instability.
