If a Rust dedicated server closes immediately, freezes during boot, or never reaches the “Server startup complete” message, do not guess at launch flags first. Start it with -logfile, read the complete log, validate app ID 258550 with SteamCMD, then test without custom maps and plugins. That order separates damaged files, broken map prefabs, outdated extensions, bad ports, and Rust+ connectivity failures without destroying your world or configuration.

Use this order before changing anything
Most failed Rust starts become straightforward once the full log is captured. The Rust Wiki FAQ says that startup errors are attributed to user error in 99% of cases, but “user error” can mean anything from a stale plugin to a single incorrect launch parameter. Work through these checks in sequence:

- Stop every RustDedicated process and make a backup of your server configuration, map files, world save, and plugin folder.
- Launch the server with
-logfileand record the last 30–50 lines before it exits or stops responding. - Look for
Server startup complete. If it is present, the process started; a later connection problem is not a startup failure. - Run SteamCMD’s update for dedicated-server app ID
258550with thevalidateoption. - Start once with a clean, procedural map and no third-party plugins or server-side extensions.
- Only after a clean boot, restore your map, plugins, launch flags, and Rust+ integration one change at a time.
Capture the complete startup log
Launch with a logfile
Add -logfile to the same command or panel field you use to start RustDedicated. Use a dedicated filename if your panel supports one, for example -logfile "logs/startup.log". Keep the console visible as well; the console often shows only that an exception occurred, while the file contains the object, plugin, or map operation that failed.
Facepunch’s server-creation guidance notes that a normal boot can produce a large amount of output, including errors that are harmless during initialization. Treat the final state, not an isolated warning, as the first indication of success: the important confirmation is Server startup complete.

Where to look on disk
On installations that use the standard layout, the Unity output file is commonly RustDedicated_Data/output_log.txt. A LinuxGSM issue shows this file containing useful startup diagnostics. Your control panel may redirect output elsewhere, so use the path displayed by the panel or the path supplied to -logfile rather than assuming a location.
Search for the first real failure
Search the log for NullReferenceException, failed, and the last occurrence of Exception. Read several lines above each match; the first exception is often the cause and later errors are consequences. A LinuxGSM example includes Console.dll load messages that are harmless and a Player data archive not found line that can appear when the server runs from the local filesystem. Do not treat either line as proof that the server failed.
Validate the Rust dedicated-server installation
Run SteamCMD validation
With the server stopped, run SteamCMD’s app update for app ID 258550 and append validate. Keep the install directory pointed at the directory from which your panel launches RustDedicated. A generic command is:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <rust-server-directory> +app_update 258550 validate +quitReplace the bracketed path with the real absolute path; do not leave the brackets in the command. If you manage several servers, validate each installation separately so that one instance does not repair another instance’s files.

What validation does—and does not do
Validation compares the installed dedicated-server files with Steam’s manifest and redownloads missing or damaged files. It does not repair a broken custom map, an incompatible plugin, a duplicate port assignment, or a malformed server configuration. Back up configuration and save files first, because those are separate from the binaries being checked.
A patch can invalidate an extension even when validation reports no missing files. Re-run validation on each patch day, as recommended by practitioner guides, then test a clean launch before restoring custom content.

Capture the complete SteamCMD output, including the app ID, install directory, and the exact error. A containerized-server report describes the message “steamcmd needs to be online to update”; a later post in that thread says panel version 29.4.3 resolved that particular report. That is a single forum experience, not a universal fix. First verify outbound network access from the container, DNS resolution, the mounted install directory, and the panel’s SteamCMD version. Upgrade the panel only after confirming that its release notes apply to your environment.
Remove custom maps and plugins from the equation
Perform a clean-start test
- Stop the server and copy the current map, save, configuration, and plugin directories to a backup location.
- Temporarily select a normal procedural map or another known-good map.
- Move third-party plugins and server-side extensions out of the active plugins directory, or disable them in the panel.
- Launch with only the basic server settings and a logfile.
- If the clean server reaches
Server startup complete, restore one map or plugin at a time and restart after each change.
This test preserves your original files while identifying the first component that reintroduces the failure. Never overwrite the only copy of a world save while experimenting.

Diagnose a server-side NullReferenceException
The Facepunch FAQ associates a [Server-side] NullReferenceException during startup with a custom map containing a broken prefab. The short console line is not enough to identify it; use the full logfile to determine which map asset was being loaded. Switch to a known-good procedural map. If that fixes the boot, repair or regenerate the custom map before putting it back into production.
Check Cargo Ship paths on custom maps
Facepunch also documents a freeze when a custom map has no ocean area for Cargo Ship routes. The server may appear to hang rather than exit with a useful error. Use a map with a valid ocean route, or disable the Cargo Ship event with the current startup parameter documented by Facepunch. Parameter names can change, so copy the spelling from the current Rust server documentation instead of relying on an old panel preset.
Bring plugins back only after the map works
Outdated plugins are a common practitioner-reported cause of startup failures after a Rust update. Check each plugin’s compatibility with the current server build, remove duplicate copies, and restore extensions individually. If the logfile identifies a plugin assembly or hook immediately before the exception, leave that plugin disabled while you obtain a compatible release or roll back its configuration.
Correct launch flags and port assignments
Use the server’s current syntax
Launch arguments are parsed before the map loads, so one misspelled or duplicated option can stop the process early. An old Oxide forum thread specifically recommends +server.port rather than -port. Because that advice dates from 2016, test it against the current Rust build and your panel’s generated command line; do not assume an old flag is still accepted.

Inspect the final command shown by your panel, not just the template you edited. Remove duplicate +server.port, RCON, query, or identity arguments, and quote paths that contain spaces. Start with one authoritative command line before adding performance or mod-specific flags.

Published hosting guides do not agree on the conventional Rust port layout. One guide lists ports 28015–28017 and places RCON on 28017; another lists RCON on 28016 and query on 28017. These are guide-specific examples, not a guaranteed standard. Use the values in your own configuration and logfile, and make sure every instance on the machine has a unique set.

Check whether another process owns the port
If the logfile reports that a socket cannot bind, identify the process using that port before changing random numbers. On Windows, run netstat -ano | findstr :28015 and match the returned process ID in Task Manager. On Linux, use ss -ltnp | grep 28015. Substitute the port shown in your log. Stop the old RustDedicated process or assign an unused port, then update the firewall and client connection details together.
Handle Rust+ companion-server failures
A server can finish most initialization and still report a Rust+ problem. The distinctive message is Rust+ companion server connectivity test failed! The documented remedy is to allow the server to reach companion-rust.facepunch.com over outbound network access. Check container egress rules, DNS, proxy settings, and host firewall policies. A successful local game boot does not prove that this outbound destination is reachable.

If you do not use Rust+, disable the Rust+ integration through the current server configuration method rather than deleting random files or suppressing the log line. Leave the rest of the server configuration unchanged, restart, and confirm that the companion test is no longer requested.
Windows and Linux checks
Windows 10
- Run the launch command from the Rust dedicated-server directory so relative paths for maps, logs, and plugins resolve to the intended installation.
- Use quoted paths in a batch file or panel field when the install directory contains spaces.
- Check that the account running the service can read the server files and write the logfile, save directory, and configuration files.
- If the process reaches
Server startup completebut remote players cannot connect, investigate Windows Firewall and port forwarding separately; that is a connectivity problem, not a failed startup.
Linux
- Confirm that the service and panel point to the same Rust installation directory; a successful SteamCMD update in one directory does not repair another.
- Check ownership and write access for the logfile, save, and configuration directories used by the service account.
- Read
RustDedicated_Data/output_log.txtas well as the systemd or panel log, because Unity exceptions may be written only to the game’s output file. - A “Player data archive not found” message can be normal when the server is running from the local filesystem; judge success by the complete startup sequence.
Interpret the outcome of each test
The process exits before map loading
Prioritize SteamCMD validation, the generated command line, executable permissions or service ownership on Linux, and duplicate ports. The earlier the exit occurs, the less likely a map prefab is to be the first cause.
The process freezes while loading a custom map
Switch to a procedural map. If the procedural map starts, investigate broken prefabs and the missing-ocean Cargo Ship condition in the custom map, then restore the map only after it passes a clean test.
The process starts only when plugins are removed
Leave all plugins disabled, then re-enable them individually. The first plugin that reproduces the exception needs an update, a configuration reset, or removal.
The server starts locally but the panel reports failure
Compare the panel’s health check with the logfile. A panel may be watching the wrong port, expecting a different RCON assignment, or launching a second instance. Use the line Server startup complete and the actual bound ports as the source of truth.

- Keep dated backups of the world save, configuration, custom map, and plugin directory.
- Record the exact Rust build, SteamCMD install path, launch command, game port, query port, and RCON port.
- After every Rust update, validate app ID 258550, boot without plugins, and inspect the logfile before restoring extensions.
- Maintain a known-good procedural-map profile that can be started without custom content.
- Keep a copy of the last working panel or container configuration so a newly generated command can be compared line by line.
- Document whether Rust+ is enabled and whether the host permits outbound access to
companion-rust.facepunch.com.
What to include when asking for help
Post the complete command line with passwords and tokens removed, the Rust build date or version shown by SteamCMD, the operating system, whether the server runs directly or in a container, and the final section of the logfile beginning before the first exception. Include whether a procedural map with all plugins disabled starts successfully. This information lets others distinguish damaged binaries, map data, plugin incompatibility, port conflicts, and Rust+ network failures without asking you to repeat the same tests.
