Measure which symptom you have before changing settings. Start with time ssh user@host true, compare the hostname with the server’s IP address, and test IPv4 and IPv6 separately. Then inspect DNS, packet loss, SSH logs, and VPS CPU, memory, swap, disk I/O, and network usage.

First identify what “slow SSH” means
Do not treat every delay as an SSH configuration problem. The fix depends on when the delay occurs.

There is no universal “acceptable” lag number. The practical comparison is your own baseline from a healthy network, the same VPS, and the same command.
Measure a baseline before changing configuration
Time a non-interactive SSH command
Run a command that does almost no work on the VPS:
time ssh user@host trueThis separates connection and authentication overhead from shell startup and application work. Repeat it several times. A slow first connection followed by fast repeats can indicate setup or name-resolution work; consistently slow runs suggest a persistent path, server, or authentication problem.

Compare names, addresses and protocols
- Run the timed command with the normal hostname.
- Run it again with the VPS’s numeric IP address. If the IP is fast and the hostname is slow, investigate forward DNS and reverse DNS rather than changing ciphers or authentication.
- Force IPv4 with
ssh -4 user@hostand force IPv6 withssh -6 user@host. A large difference identifies an address-family or route problem. - Repeat the test from another network if possible. This distinguishes your local connection from the VPS and its provider.
During a reproduction, record the client-side latency and packet-loss results, the SSH service log entries, and the VPS’s resource graphs. A timestamped comparison is more useful than changing several settings at once.
Fix a long delay before authentication
Check forward and reverse DNS first
The OpenSSH FAQ notes that delays longer than 10 seconds are typically caused by name resolution. SSH can perform lookups involving the client and server addresses; a broken, unreachable or misconfigured DNS path can therefore make the handshake appear frozen even when the VPS is otherwise healthy.
- Compare the hostname and numeric-IP timings from the baseline test.
- Check that the hostname resolves promptly from your client.
- Check reverse DNS for the client address and the VPS address where your operating system and provider expose those records.
- Look for timeouts or failed lookups in the SSH service log while making one test connection.
Do not infer that DNS is the cause solely because the pause feels long. Confirm it by comparing addresses and by checking logs.
Use IPv4 as a diagnostic, not a blind permanent fix
If ssh -4 is quick while the default or ssh -6 path stalls, the problem may be an unusable IPv6 route or address configuration. You can make the test persistent for one host in your client configuration:
Host vps-example
HostName your-hostname.example
AddressFamily inetAddressFamily inet selects IPv4 for that host. Keep the hostname in HostName so you can continue to use the same alias, and remove the override after the IPv6 path is repaired if you need IPv6.

Test server-side reverse lookups with UseDNS
On configurations where server-side lookups are responsible, the OpenSSH FAQ documents UseDNS no as a way to disable most of those lookups. This is a targeted test: edit the server’s SSH daemon configuration only if you have console or another out-of-band recovery path, validate the configuration, restart or reload the SSH service according to your distribution, and then repeat the timed test.

UseDNS noDo not change firewall or authentication settings at the same time. If the delay does not change, revert an unnecessary setting and continue with authentication and network checks. A configuration change that hides a DNS symptom without fixing records or reachability can make later diagnosis harder.
Inspect authentication and service logs
If hostname-versus-IP and IPv4-versus-IPv6 tests are equally slow, inspect the SSH service log at the exact time of a test. Look for delays involving the authentication backend, account lookups, key retrieval, or policy modules. Also check whether the VPS is CPU-starved or swapping; an overloaded daemon can make every stage of the handshake appear slow.
Keep one administrative session open while editing SSH settings. A syntax error, an incorrect bind address, or a firewall change can otherwise lock you out. Validate the daemon configuration using the check mode provided by your operating system before reloading it.
Fix delayed keystrokes and screen updates after login
Understand why ordinary SSH feels frozen
The official Mosh documentation explains the interaction: SSH waits for the server’s reply before showing your own typing. On a high-latency or lossy path, every character and redraw can wait for a round trip. The VPS may be idle while the connection still feels unusable.

Measure round-trip latency and packet loss from the client while typing and while running a small command. Check the route from the client to the VPS and the return path if your provider exposes that information. A busy Wi-Fi link, VPN tunnel, mobile connection, congested peering path or overloaded VPS network interface can all produce the same visible symptom.
Try Mosh when UDP is available
Mosh is designed to provide immediate local echo, tolerate packet loss and roam when your network changes. It still uses SSH for the initial login, then starts mosh-server on the VPS and carries the interactive session over UDP.
- Install the Mosh client on your computer and confirm that the
mosh-serverbinary is installed on the VPS using your operating system’s package source. - Verify that the VPS firewall, cloud firewall and any intervening network permit the UDP path required by your Mosh installation.
- Connect with the Mosh client using the same account and host you tested with SSH.
- Move between networks or introduce ordinary packet loss only as a controlled test; do not use a production workload to validate an unknown firewall change.
Mosh does not repair a slow SSH handshake, a saturated VPS or a failed DNS lookup. It helps after the SSH login succeeds and the remaining problem is interactive network behavior.
Troubleshoot Mosh startup failures
If Mosh hangs while starting, the remote shell or the launch of mosh-server may be failing. If the client and server start but cannot exchange packets, the Mosh debugging guidance identifies that as a network problem.

- Check that the server binary is in the expected executable path and can start for the target account.
- Inspect client output and server logs for the assigned UDP endpoint and any permission or shell-startup error.
- Check every firewall layer, including the VPS host firewall and provider-level rules.
- If UDP is blocked by policy, keep SSH and use a multiplexer for durability; Mosh cannot bypass a denied UDP path.
Fix commands that are slow on the VPS itself
When login and typing are responsive but a command takes a long time, the network is not necessarily at fault. Reproduce the slowdown and watch the VPS at the same time.

Check CPU pressure and runnable work

htopThe load average is meaningful only alongside the number of virtual CPUs and the processes consuming CPU. Identify whether one workload, a build, a database, backup, or another tenant process is competing with your command. If the spike is temporary, reschedule the job; if it is sustained, reduce concurrency or add capacity.
Check memory, swap and reclaim activity
free -h
vmstat 1Low available memory and active swapping can make an otherwise simple shell command stall. In vmstat, watch for sustained swap activity and unusually high wait or blocked-process indicators while reproducing the issue. Stop or reschedule memory-heavy work only after identifying what owns it; killing an unknown service can create a second outage.
Check disk I/O wait
iostatHigh I/O wait means processes are waiting for storage rather than using CPU. A full or heavily contended volume, burst-credit exhaustion, database checkpoint, log rotation or backup can affect both commands and interactive redraws. Correlate the timing with provider disk graphs and the application’s own logs.
Check the provider’s instance and network view
Provider monitoring can reveal CPU health, network connectivity and instance-state events that are invisible inside the guest. Google Compute Engine’s SSH troubleshooting workflow, for example, checks network connectivity and VM instance status alongside CPU health. Use the equivalent checks in your VPS control panel. If only this instance is unhealthy, migrate or replace it; if several instances show the same route issue, investigate the provider region or upstream network.

A multiplexer detaches the shell from the SSH transport. The process continues on the VPS after your laptop sleeps, your route changes or SSH disconnects, and you can reattach later.

A minimal tmux workflow
- Connect to the VPS and create a named session:
tmux new -s work- Start the long-running command inside that session.
- Detach without stopping the command by pressing
Ctrl-b, thend. - Disconnect SSH normally or allow the network to recover.
- Reconnect and reattach:
tmux attach -t workUse a separate named session for unrelated jobs so that reconnecting to one workload does not disturb another. The same durability principle applies to screen; use whichever multiplexer is installed and familiar to your team.

Reduce repeated setup time with SSH connection reuse
If every new SSH command repeats the same handshake, connection reuse can eliminate much of that setup. OpenSSH supports ControlMaster and ControlPersist on a per-host basis.
Host vps-example

ControlPersist 5m
ControlPath ~/.ssh/cm-%CThe first connection creates the control connection; later connections to the same host can reuse it while it remains available. Test this with one host before applying it broadly. Make sure the control-socket directory is private and writable, and remove stale sockets if a crashed client prevents reuse. Connection reuse does not improve an already-laggy interactive path and does not help when the server itself is overloaded; it targets repeated connection setup.
Correct terminal rendering before blaming the network
Verify TERM outside and inside tmux
The tmux FAQ identifies an incorrect TERM value as a common cause of broken colors, cursor movement and line-drawing characters. Compare the value in your normal shell with the value inside tmux:

echo "$TERM"The outer terminal and tmux environment must advertise capabilities that are actually installed and supported. Common compatible values include tmux-256color and screen-256color; do not force one merely because it looks familiar. Choose the value supported by your local terminal database and the VPS’s terminfo files. An incorrect value can make a fast connection look broken because applications redraw incorrectly.

tmux automatic window renaming can consume substantial CPU on a slow computer. If local CPU usage rises while tmux is open, disable it:
setw -g automatic-rename offThis setting addresses local tmux overhead, not packet loss or VPS load. Re-enable automatic names if the feature is useful and your client can handle it.
Choose the remedy from the symptom

A safe troubleshooting order
- Run
time ssh user@host trueand record whether the delay is before authentication, during interaction, or inside the command. - Compare hostname, numeric IP, IPv4 and IPv6 so name resolution and address-family problems are not confused with server load.
- During one reproduction, collect client latency and packet-loss observations, SSH service logs, and VPS CPU, memory, swap, disk-I/O and network data.
- Apply one targeted change, such as a DNS correction, an IPv4 test, a verified SSH lookup setting, a route repair or a resource reduction, then repeat the same baseline.
- If interaction remains laggy after login, test Mosh only after confirming the server binary and UDP path.
- Put every job that must survive a disconnect in tmux or screen, regardless of whether the network issue is fixed.
- Correct
TERMand tmux overhead when the problem is display behavior rather than transport latency.
An old OpenSSH FAQ example measured a 0.22-second SSHv2 connection on an otherwise unloaded 2.1 GHz Athlon XP 2600+ system. That historical illustration is not a modern VPS target or a performance guarantee. Use your own repeated baseline and the evidence from the failing path to decide whether the connection is healthy.
