When a social media plugin fails in WordPress, first identify what broke: front-end buttons or feeds, the editor connection, automatic publishing, or a failure that began after an update. Then test in a private window, verify the plugin is actually placed and visible, clear caches, isolate conflicts on staging, inspect REST/AJAX and loopback requests, check server requirements, and reconnect the social account. This order fixes the common causes without risking the live site.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Start by matching the symptom to the likely layer
“Not working” can describe several unrelated failures. A missing share button is usually a placement, cache, browser-extension, or CSS problem; an editor that cannot save may involve REST or AJAX requests; failed automatic publishing often points to expired permissions, the wrong account, or a social-network API restriction; and a failure immediately after an update commonly indicates a plugin, theme, PHP, or WordPress compatibility conflict.

| Posts will not publish to Facebook or Instagram | Account selection, business permissions, authorization expiry, app mode, outbound HTTPS | Selected page or business account, authorization date, and any numbered error |
| The plugin stopped after a WordPress, theme, PHP, or plugin update | Version incompatibility or a newly introduced conflict | All component versions and the time the failure began |
Keep this record while troubleshooting. It prevents a vague support request and lets you tell whether a change fixed the original failure or merely altered its symptoms.
Make a safe diagnosis before changing the live site
Reproduce the failure
- Open the affected page in a private browser window while logged out. Test the WordPress editor separately in a normal window.
- Repeat in a second browser or on another device. Note whether every visitor is affected or only one browser profile.
- Write down the exact error, the social network involved, the page or template, and the action that fails (rendering, saving, connecting, or publishing).
A failure that disappears in a private window is usually local browser state or an extension, not a broken WordPress installation. A failure reproduced by every browser and visitor deserves server, configuration, or conflict testing.

Protect production with staging
Create a current staging copy before deactivating plugins, changing the theme, or editing server settings. WordPress guidance describes a conflict as two components that each work alone but fail when active together; staging lets you test that condition without taking the public site offline. Confirm that staging has a recent database and uploads, and do not send test posts to a real social audience.
Check that the output is enabled and visible
Verify the plugin’s placement
Open the plugin’s settings and the relevant WordPress editing surface. Confirm that output is enabled for the affected post type and location:
- A block must be inserted in the page or template where you expect it.
- A widget must be assigned to the active widget area.
- A shortcode must be present in the content and permitted by the template.
- A floating-button feature must be enabled for the current device and content types.
- A feed or profile integration must be assigned to the page, sidebar, or template being viewed.
Test a page that uses the default theme template as well as the custom template where the failure was reported. If the default template works, the integration is present and the custom template, conditional display rule, or CSS is suppressing it.
Look for CSS and markup suppression
Use the browser’s inspector to determine whether the plugin’s markup exists. If the element is present but invisible, check for display:none, zero dimensions, an overflowing container, a low z-index, or a theme rule that sets the text and icon color to the background. If no markup is generated, return to placement and plugin settings rather than trying to fix CSS.

Account for privacy and ad-blocking tools
Ad blockers and privacy extensions can block social scripts, iframes, tracking endpoints, or third-party fonts. Temporarily disable them for the test, or use a clean private window. Do not ask every visitor to weaken privacy protection; the goal is to establish whether the browser is the cause. If disabling an extension restores the feature, document the blocked request and look for the plugin’s privacy-compatible or server-rendered option.
Clear caches without destroying useful evidence
- Purge the WordPress page or object cache used by the site.
- Purge any reverse-proxy or content-delivery-network cache.
- Hard-refresh the browser, then retest while logged out.
- Clear only the affected site’s browser storage if the problem persists; keep a screenshot of the error first.
A stale page can continue displaying an old template after you place the block correctly. Conversely, purging cache cannot repair a failed API request, so inspect the Network panel if the fresh page still lacks output. Test both a cache-bypassed logged-in view and a normal logged-out view; some cache systems serve different HTML to each.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIsolate plugin and theme conflicts on staging
Use a controlled one-by-one test
- On staging, deactivate every plugin except the social media plugin.
- Switch to a default WordPress theme.
- Reproduce the original action: load the feed, save the editor, or run a non-public connection test.
- If it works, reactivate the other plugins one at a time, testing after each activation.
- When the failure returns, deactivate the last component and confirm that the social feature works again. Then test the suspected pair together to verify the conflict.
- Restore the original theme on staging and repeat the test. A theme-only failure points to template markup, JavaScript, or CSS rather than the social plugin itself.
Do not reactivate everything at once; that removes the information about which combination caused the error. Keep a written sequence and timestamps so another administrator can reproduce it.
Interpret the result
- Works with all other plugins off: investigate the reactivated plugin that brings the failure back, its JavaScript, or its security rules.
- Fails with the default theme and only the social plugin: inspect the plugin, WordPress, PHP, server requests, and social-account connection.
- Fails only with the production theme: compare template hooks, enqueued scripts, CSS, and any custom optimization code.
- Cannot reproduce on staging: compare URLs, PHP settings, cache layers, credentials, and server security rules between staging and production.
Inspect REST, AJAX, and loopback requests
Open browser developer tools, select Network, reproduce the failing action, and filter for wp-json, admin-ajax.php, or requests made by the plugin. Record the request URL, method, response status, and response body. In Tools → Site Health, review REST API and loopback warnings as well.

| Status | What it commonly indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| 401 Unauthorized | Missing or expired login, cookie, token, or account authorization | Log in again, verify cookies, and reconnect the social account. |
| 403 Forbidden | Web-application firewall, security rule, capability check, or blocked origin | Review security logs and test on staging; ask the host which rule blocked the request. |
| 404 Not Found | Missing route, rewrite issue, stale script, or incompatible endpoint | Regenerate permalinks, clear caches, and confirm the plugin version matches the installed WordPress version. |
| 429 Too Many Requests | Rate limiting by the host, firewall, or social API | Stop repeated retries, check limits and logs, then retry after the limit window. |
| 500 or another 5xx response | PHP fatal error, server failure, or an upstream API failure | Check PHP and web-server logs and the response body; do not hide the error by repeatedly refreshing. |
Do not disable the REST API
WordPress Developer Resources’ REST API FAQ warns: “You should not disable the REST API; doing so will break WordPress Admin functionality that depends on the API being active.” If a security plugin or server rule blocks the endpoint, repair the failing route or allow the required authenticated request instead of turning REST off.
Check authentication details
Logged-in requests and manual AJAX calls may require the browser’s cookies and a valid wp_rest nonce. A request copied into a tool without those credentials can fail even though the WordPress editor succeeds in a normal session. Compare the request generated by the editor with the failed request, and never paste cookies, nonces, access tokens, or app secrets into a public ticket.
Resolve activation and server-side dependencies
If the plugin will not activate
- Confirm that the uploaded ZIP is a plugin package, not a documentation archive or nested ZIP.
- Check that the main plugin file has a valid WordPress header.
- Review file and directory permissions and available disk space.
- Clear a plugin or object cache that may still contain an incomplete installation.
- Read the exact activation error and the PHP error log before trying again.
WordPress troubleshooting guidance identifies invalid headers, cache issues, and permissions errors as common activation causes. If the error is a PHP fatal, record the PHP version and the file and line named in the log; that information is more useful than a screenshot of the dashboard notice.
Confirm outbound HTTPS and cURL
Social counts, feeds, and publishing integrations often need the server to make outbound HTTPS requests. Ask the host to confirm that PHP cURL is enabled, certificate verification is functioning, and outbound connections to the required social endpoints are not blocked. Several vendor-documented numbered errors are associated with cURL failures, so include the number and timestamp in the support request.

Do not “fix” an outbound failure by disabling TLS verification or opening unrestricted firewall access. The host should identify the blocked destination and provide the narrowest secure allowance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reconnect Facebook or Instagram safely
Verify the account and page selection
In the plugin’s connection screen, confirm that the selected Facebook Page, Instagram professional account, or business account is the one that owns the content. A personal profile may not provide the permissions required for publishing or feed access. If the page is missing from the picker, sign out of unrelated accounts in the same browser and reconnect with the account that administers the page.
Review business permissions and authorization
Open Meta Business Integrations and inspect the plugin’s granted permissions. Reauthorize if access has expired, a password changed, an administrator removed the integration, or the page was transferred to another business. Grant only the scopes the plugin documents as necessary. If the integration is in development mode, only approved test users or assets may work; production publishing requires the app to be configured for the intended audience.
Retest without exposing credentials
- Disconnect the stale connection in the plugin.
- Remove the integration’s old permission only if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Reconnect the correct business or page account in a fresh browser session.
- Run a limited test on staging or a private draft, then verify the result in the social account.
Never include access tokens, app secrets, cookies, or full authorization URLs in a support ticket. Provide the error text, request time, site and plugin versions, and the affected page or business asset instead.

Recover from an update-related failure
When a feature stops immediately after an update, write down the versions of WordPress, PHP, the active theme, the social plugin, and any security or caching plugin. Check the plugin’s compatibility notes and changelog for the exact release that preceded the failure. Then reproduce the issue on staging with the same versions.
- If updating all components together caused the failure, test the social plugin with the previous theme and PHP combination.
- If only the social plugin changed, test the prior plugin release on staging when the vendor provides a supported rollback package.
- If the update introduced a JavaScript or REST error, preserve the Network response and browser console output for the vendor.
- Do not roll back a security-sensitive component on the live site without a recovery plan and a tested replacement.
Keep the live site on the safest supported versions while the cause is investigated; use staging to compare combinations rather than repeatedly changing production.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When replacing the plugin is justified
Replacement is a last step, not the first response to a hidden button. Consider it when staging confirms a reproducible incompatibility, the vendor has not updated an API the integration requires, or support confirms that the social connection has been retired. Before switching, export settings or document them, record every version, and plan a rollback.
| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| WordPress and PHP compatibility | Are the currently supported versions documented, and do they match the site’s host? |
| Social networks and APIs | Does the plugin support the exact networks, account types, and current API versions you use? |
| Permissions | Does it explain required page, business, or publishing permissions and how to revoke them? |
| Rendering method | Will it use a block, widget, shortcode, template hook, or floating control that fits your theme and cache? |
| Performance and caching | Can output be cached safely, and does the plugin document third-party requests and failure behavior? |
| Update cadence and support | Are releases current, conflicts acknowledged, and support responses specific about API changes? |
| Privacy and data handling | What data leaves the site, which cookies or embeds are used, and can consent be managed? |
| Migration and rollback | Can settings, shortcodes, and connections be migrated, and is a tested rollback path documented? |
After installing a replacement on staging, recreate the original placement, test logged-out rendering, run the editor connection, and verify a non-public publishing workflow before changing the live site.
Prevent the next outage
- Keep a staging site that mirrors production and test major WordPress, PHP, theme, and plugin updates there first.
- Maintain a version inventory and note the date of every social-account authorization.
- Test both logged-in editor actions and logged-out front-end output after updates.
- Monitor Site Health for REST and loopback warnings.
- Document cache purges, firewall exceptions, required cURL support, and the social permissions the integration needs.
- Keep a private test page or staging account so publishing tests do not send accidental public posts.
The practical rule is simple: prove where the failure occurs before changing anything. Visibility and browser interference are common, conflicts are safest to isolate on staging, REST should be repaired rather than disabled, and social publishing depends on both server networking and account permissions.
