Work from the least disruptive fixes first: update and restart the Steam Deck, then check whether the problem affects one game or the whole system. For a single game, check its Steam Deck compatibility details, verify its installed files, and—if it is a Steam game—try a per-game Proton setting. If the game starts before crashing, reduce its graphics load. No one step is guaranteed to fix every title.
Start with updates and a restart
- Press the Steam button and open Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck.
- Launch the affected game again before changing other settings.
Steam Support recommends updating and restarting as an initial step for system instability in its Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.
Check whether it is one game or a wider problem
- Only one game fails: focus on that game’s compatibility details, files, and game-specific support.
- Several games or applications are unstable: update and restart first, then temporarily disable third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode and retest. Steam recommends exiting or disabling these apps and restarting when applications running through Steam are unstable.
This distinction helps avoid changing game-specific settings to address a broader system issue. Steam’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide covers system and application troubleshooting.
Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Store page and find its Steam Deck Compatibility section. The Deck Verified categories indicate whether a game works by default, needs configuration, is currently considered unsupported, or has not been tested. For a Playable or Unsupported rating, the Store page also identifies requirements the game does not meet.

Use the rating as a clue, not a diagnosis: it may explain setup limitations, but does not establish why a particular game is crashing. If an error says the game is unavailable on your current platform, Steam says the game does not support the current operating system. Check the Store page’s supported operating systems and hardware requirements; this is different from a Deck-compatible game that crashes during startup. See Steam’s guidance on games unavailable on the current platform.
Verify the game’s installed files
- Open the game in your Library and select its gear icon or open its properties.
- Choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then try launching the game.
Steam says verification can repair missing or corrupted installed files. A message that one or more files failed verification does not always mean the repair failed: Steam notes that local configuration files may normally be left unreplaced. See Steam’s file-verification guidance.
Try a Proton compatibility tool for a Steam game
If a Steam game still will not launch, try changing its compatibility tool for that game only:
- In the Library, highlight the game, open its gear menu, and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available, then launch the game again.
Steam recommends trying the latest Proton version for Steam-app issues. This is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed fix, and a different title may behave differently. Steam also notes that forcing Proton can make Steam download the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed. This setting is for Steam games; it is not a general fix for non-Steam applications. See Steam’s Deck software troubleshooting guide.

If the game launches, reduce graphics load
When a game starts but becomes unstable or crashes during play, lower its graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings. Steam recommends reducing graphics load as a troubleshooting step for instability. Change one or two demanding settings at a time and retest, so you can tell whether they affect the crash.
For connection errors, test the network separately
If the symptom is a connection failure or timeout rather than a crash, try another Wi-Fi network or band. Steam Support also suggests a wired connection as a way to isolate network trouble where possible. A Steam Deck needs additional USB-C-to-Ethernet hardware for that test; an adapter is only useful here and is not a general remedy for launch failures or crashes. Refer to Steam Hardware Network + Wi-Fi Troubleshooting.
Escalate without risking local data
For a game-specific failure
If other games work and this one still fails after the steps above, contact the game developer through its support channel. Include the game name, the exact error message, whether the problem began after an update, and what you have already tried. That gives support a focused account of the failure.
For broader Steam Deck instability
If several applications remain unstable, consult Steam Deck discussions or contact Steam Support. Steam’s recovery documentation lists rollback, factory reset, erasing local data, and re-imaging as broader recovery options—not first-line fixes for one game. Some actions erase local data or installed games, so review the consequences before proceeding in SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting.
