Identify what has disappeared
Decky Loader is a community homebrew launcher that adds a plugin interface to Steam Deck. The word plugin can therefore describe two different failures: the Decky interface may be gone, or Decky may be present while a particular plugin does not load. The recovery path is different, so check the symptom before changing anything.

Decky’s README states, “Sometimes Decky will disappear on SteamOS updates.” That behavior does not by itself mean your Steam Deck needs a factory reset, a SteamOS reimage, or deletion of all plugin data.
Restore Decky Loader after it disappears
Use the stable installer first
The official Decky Loader project recommends rerunning its installer when an update removes the loader. Perform the recovery from Desktop Mode:

- Save any open work and choose the Steam menu’s power option to Switch to Desktop.
- Open the official Decky Loader GitHub project and follow its current installation instructions. The installer and labels can change, so use the instructions shown by the project rather than an old command copied from a forum post.
- When the installer asks which channel to use, select Latest Release, the stable channel intended for most users.
- Let the installer finish, then return to Gaming Mode through the desktop’s return-to-gaming option.
- Open Quick Access with the … button and check whether the Decky entry and its settings gear are back.
A keyboard and mouse can make Desktop Mode navigation more comfortable, but they are optional. Decky’s installation guidance says the right trackpad and the on-screen keyboard can be used instead.
If the stable reinstall does not recover Decky
Decky’s README lists Latest Pre-Release as a fallback when reinstalling the stable release does not restore the loader after an update. Select that channel only as a troubleshooting step. The project describes prereleases as intended primarily for plugin developers and warns that they may be less stable than the latest release.

After installing a prerelease, test the Decky menu and the plugins you actually use. If it restores the loader but introduces new instability, record the channel and version in any issue report; that detail helps maintainers distinguish a prerelease problem from a SteamOS compatibility problem.
Do not start with destructive cleanup
Neither the Decky project’s recovery guidance nor its common-issues notes recommends a factory reset, SteamOS reimage, or blanket deletion of plugin data for a missing loader. Those actions create additional risk and can erase unrelated files without addressing the cause.
Uninstalling an individual plugin is different from wiping the Deck. The README says a plugin uninstall removes that plugin’s files, but it may not remove other files the plugin created elsewhere. If you later need to reinstall that plugin, keep this limitation in mind and remove leftover files only when the plugin’s own documentation or maintainer gives a safe, specific procedure.

- Enter Decky.
- Open the settings gear.
- Use the plugin-management controls to check for a loader update, update the affected plugin, reload it, or uninstall it.
- If Decky or Steam asks for a reload or a Steam restart, accept it before judging whether the change worked.
A June 2026 troubleshooting guide describes checking for loader updates in this area, updating individual plugins, and confirming the requested reload or restart. The official README likewise directs users to the settings gear for updating, uninstalling, and reloading plugins.

Isolate the failing plugin
If only one plugin is broken, do not immediately reinstall Decky. First update or reload that plugin and test the function that was failing. If it remains unusable, uninstall the plugin from the same settings screen and check whether the rest of Decky works again. This separates a plugin-specific fault from a loader-wide failure.
Because each plugin is maintained by a different developer, there is no single Decky-wide fix for every plugin error. A plugin can become incompatible with a SteamOS change, depend on a service that is not running, or retain configuration outside its own plugin files. Treat the plugin’s current source and issue tracker as the authority for its particular requirements.
When several plugins fail together
Several failures at once suggest checking the loader rather than repeatedly removing unrelated plugins. Confirm that Decky itself opens, check for a loader update in the settings gear, and then inspect the port conflicts described in the next section. If the loader menu cannot open at all, return to the Desktop Mode reinstall procedure instead of trying to manage plugins from a missing interface.
Check for port conflicts
Decky’s official README identifies software using ports 8080 or 1337 as a common source of interference. Its wording is explicit: software using either port should be moved to another port or uninstalled. A conflict can prevent the loader from starting correctly, make a reinstall appear ineffective, or cause the problem to recur after a reboot.

Syncthing on port 8080
The README specifically calls out Syncthing when it is running as a service on port 8080. If Syncthing is installed on your Deck, check its service configuration and move its web interface off 8080. The README names 8384 as Syncthing’s recommended port. Apply the change using Syncthing’s own settings and restart that service before testing Decky again.

Other software using 8080 or 1337
Look for background services, development tools, servers, or homebrew utilities that bind to either port. Change the conflicting application to an unused port according to its documentation, then restart the application and Decky. Do not assume that every missing plugin is caused by a port: this check is most useful when the loader itself will not start, when multiple plugins fail, or when the same failure returns after a successful reinstall.
If you cannot identify which process owns a port, avoid deleting random configuration files. Record the application name, its service status, and the port it uses, then include those details in a Decky issue report or the application’s support channel.
Use trusted plugin sources and the right maintainer
Decky is a launcher, not a single publisher for every plugin shown in its menu. Different developers maintain different plugins, and their update schedules and compatibility decisions can differ. Install or update a plugin only from a source you can verify, and avoid untrusted repositories or copied packages that do not identify a maintainer.
For a plugin-specific error, check that plugin’s current source, release notes, and issue tracker. Include the plugin name and version, the Decky channel, and the SteamOS version when asking for help. A maintainer can then tell whether the failure is a known incompatibility, a missing dependency, or a configuration issue that Decky itself cannot repair.
Escalate with useful technical details
If stable reinstall, plugin management, and port checks do not solve the problem, use the Decky Loader issue tracker. The project README recommends looking for an existing matching report first and filing a new report when none exists. A precise report is more actionable than a statement that the plugin is gone.
- Identify the system: state the Steam Deck model if relevant and the exact SteamOS version, including the update channel.
- Identify Decky: provide the Decky Loader version and whether it is on Latest Release or Latest Pre-Release.
- Identify the plugin: give the plugin name and version, and say whether one plugin or several are affected.
- Describe the change: note the SteamOS update, Decky update, plugin update, reboot, or other event immediately before the failure.
- Quote the error: copy the exact message, including capitalization and any error code, instead of paraphrasing it.
- Attach available logs: include the relevant Decky or plugin logs if the project’s issue template requests them, while removing passwords, tokens, private keys, and personal data.
- List tests already performed: say whether you reinstalled stable, tried the prerelease fallback, reloaded or uninstalled the plugin, restarted Steam, and checked ports 8080 and 1337.
Version and channel details matter even when two users report the same symptom. A September 2024 issue report described startup failures on SteamOS 3.5.7 Stable, but it is a single user report and does not establish how common that failure was or what causes current versions to fail. Use it as an example of why precise versions belong in a report, not as proof that the same diagnosis applies to your Deck.

For a plugin-only failure, contact that plugin’s maintainer through its own issue tracker as well as checking Decky’s tracker when appropriate. Steam Support provides general Steam troubleshooting resources, but the support material available for this problem does not provide a Decky-specific repair procedure.

Use this order so that each test tells you something useful:
- Look for the Decky entry in Quick Access. If it is absent, switch to Desktop Mode and rerun the official installer.
- Choose Latest Release first, then return to Gaming Mode and test the menu.
- If stable does not restore Decky, try Latest Pre-Release and note that it can be less stable.
- If Decky opens, use the settings gear to update or reload the affected plugin. Accept any requested reload or Steam restart.
- Uninstall only the failing plugin if updating and reloading do not help, then test the remaining plugins.
- When several plugins fail or the loader repeatedly disappears, check applications using ports 8080 and 1337. Move Syncthing’s interface from 8080 to the README’s recommended 8384 when applicable.
- If none of those steps works, search the matching issue tracker and report the exact SteamOS, Decky, channel, plugin, error, and log details.
This sequence avoids treating a single broken plugin as a complete Decky failure and avoids destructive fixes that are not part of the project’s documented recovery path.

The practical decision is not between competing hardware or paid services. It is between repairing the loader, repairing one plugin, and changing the installer channel only when necessary:
- Missing Decky interface: reinstall from Desktop Mode using Latest Release.
- Decky present and one plugin broken: use the settings gear to update, reload, or uninstall that plugin.
- Stable reinstall fails: try Latest Pre-Release as a fallback, understanding its instability warning.
- Failure persists or returns: investigate ports 8080 and 1337, especially Syncthing on 8080.
- No resolution: use the relevant issue tracker with exact versions, channels, errors, and logs.
Bottom line
A SteamOS update that removes Decky usually calls for a non-destructive reinstall, not a factory reset. If Decky still opens, manage the individual plugin from its settings gear; only broaden the investigation to port conflicts and issue trackers when that targeted path fails. Should I install the prerelease version immediately?
No. Latest Release is the stable channel intended for most users and should be the first recovery attempt. Use Latest Pre-Release only when reinstalling stable did not restore Decky. The project says prereleases are primarily for plugin developers and may be less stable.

Does uninstalling a plugin remove every file it created?
