You can’t legitimately bypass a Steam Family Sharing lock. First check whether the game is shareable and your accounts are in the same eligible Steam Family. If the family owns only one copy and someone is playing it, wait for that copy to become available or add another copy for simultaneous play. Remote Play Together can help with a supported local-multiplayer session, but it does not unlock a shared-library license.
What Steam Family Sharing means now
Valve’s Steam Families feature replaced the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View systems, becoming generally available on September 11, 2024. Valve describes Steam Families as intended for a household of up to six close family members. When accounts join a family, shareable games in members’ libraries become available to the others, while each person keeps their own account, saves, achievements, and progress. Why a shared game may be locked
The game cannot be shared
Developers can opt games out of sharing, and some titles are excluded for technical reasons—for example, because they require a third-party key, account, or subscription. Check the game’s current Steam store information rather than assuming every library title is eligible.
Another family member is using the only copy
A family can play the same game at the same time only if its shared library contains multiple copies of that game. If there is one copy in use, another member must wait or play a different available game. Valve describes this rule in its Steam Families FAQ.

The accounts may not meet family requirements
Steam Families is intended for immediate family in a household, not as a general way to share games with anyone. Valve says it may adjust its rules as it monitors use, so verify the current eligibility requirements in its official announcement and FAQ.
You may be following instructions for the old system
Some older guides describe the 2013 Family Sharing rules. Those instructions do not necessarily apply to Steam Families, which replaced the earlier feature. Use Valve’s current FAQ for troubleshooting; the 2013 announcement is historical background, not a current eligibility guide.
Legitimate ways to resolve the lock
- Check the game’s sharing eligibility. Look at its current Steam store information for any sharing restriction.
- Confirm the accounts are in the same eligible Steam Family. Review Valve’s current family requirements before changing membership.
- Wait for the copy to become available. While another member uses the only copy, you can play a different game in the family library.
- Add another copy for simultaneous play. Valve’s example says a second copy is needed for two family members to play the same title at once. If sharing is unavailable, the other account can buy the game directly.
When Remote Play Together helps—and when it does not
Remote Play Together lets an owner host a supported local-multiplayer game and invite others into that session. Remote Play can also stream play from a gaming PC to another device. These features are for supported multiplayer or streaming use; Valve does not describe them as a way to unlock an otherwise inaccessible shared-library game. Consider the cost of changing family membership
Adults may leave a Steam Family, but Valve’s rules require a one-year wait after joining a previous family before creating or joining another. A vacated family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can fill it. Children cannot leave a family themselves. Changing groups to get around a lock can therefore leave accounts unable to join another family for a substantial period; check Valve’s current family rules before making changes.

Offline play and game-ban risk
A family member may play a shareable game offline if that game supports Family Sharing. Valve also warns that if a family member is banned for cheating while playing another member’s copy, the game owner may be banned as well. See Valve’s Steam Families FAQ for these conditions.
