To switch only your own player to Creative, change your personal game mode—not the world’s default. In Java Edition, open Pause menu > World Options and set Personal Game Mode to Creative. In Bedrock Edition, choose Creative in the world settings, or enable cheats and use a command; enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world.

On a server, permission and target matter
On someone else’s multiplayer server or world, you need sufficient command permissions; if you are a guest, ask the owner or administrator. A command’s target determines whose mode changes. To explicitly target the player running the command, use /gamemode creative @s where that selector is supported. Command details and menu labels can vary by edition and release. In Java multiplayer, Personal Game Mode is distinct from Force Game Mode. The latter controls whether joining players are made to match the world’s default mode; it is not the setting for changing only your own mode. Minecraft Java Edition release notes
