Check the Deck compatibility details first, then work through the reversible steps below one at a time, retrying the game after each change.
1. Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck Compatibility section. Steam uses four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. The label describes known compatibility conditions; it does not diagnose why a particular launch attempt failed.
- Verified: Steam has assessed the game against its Deck compatibility criteria.
- Playable: The game works, but may require manual configuration. Check the listed details for the specific adjustment it may need.
- Unsupported: Steam has identified a compatibility issue under its assessment. This does not explain every possible launch failure.
- Unknown: Steam has not tested the game; it does not mean the game is necessarily broken.
Steam explains its compatibility categories and criteria in its Steam Deck compatibility troubleshooting guide. Compatibility can change as games, SteamOS, and Proton are updated.
2. Update and restart the Deck
Install any available SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, and try the game again. Steam also recommends temporarily exiting or disabling third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode when troubleshooting software instability. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the launch.

3. Try a different Proton version for this game
Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux-based systems. Forcing a Proton version is a per-game troubleshooting option, not a guarantee: results vary by title, and forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version if only the Linux build is installed.
- In the Steam Library, highlight the game and open its menu.
- Select Properties > Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose a current Proton version and retry the game.
Steam recommends trying the latest Proton version in its Deck troubleshooting guide. If you test another version, note which one you used and whether the result changed.

4. Verify the installed game files
A damaged or incomplete installation can prevent a game from starting. Steam’s verification checks the installed files against the expected game files; it may take several minutes.
- Open the game’s Properties page in your Library.
- Select Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- When verification finishes, try launching the game again.
Steam notes that one or more files may fail verification normally when they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. See Steam’s instructions for verifying game files.

5. Check platform support and the exact error
If Steam says “Game is not available on your current platform,” Steam defines that message as meaning the game is unsupported on the current operating system. Check the game’s Store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements. A game that runs on a Windows PC does not thereby have native Linux support; Proton is a possible compatibility route, not a promise that it will work. Steam explains the platform error here.
For other failures, record what actually happens: for example, whether the game returns to the Library, shows an error, or remains on a loading screen. The exact behavior helps distinguish a platform or compatibility problem from an installation or system issue.

6. When to contact the game developer
If the game still will not launch, contact the developer or publisher through its current support channel. Include details that make the problem reproducible:
- The game name and exact error message, or a description of what happens when you press Play.
- Your Deck model and SteamOS version.
- The Proton version you tried, if you forced one.
- Whether the game is installed on internal or removable storage.
- Which troubleshooting steps you completed and what changed after each one.
Steam’s general game launch troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking requirements, updating the operating system, verifying files, and disabling non-essential software. Its driver-update advice is aimed at PCs; the Deck runs managed SteamOS, so do not apply generic Windows driver instructions to it.

Steam documents two recovery options with different consequences. Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve games and personal content. Re-image Device resets the Deck and replaces its data with a fresh SteamOS installation. These are system-level recovery steps, not routine fixes for one game that fails to start. Back up important local content before a destructive reset, and follow Steam’s recovery instructions if recovery is genuinely needed. Steam’s instructions specify a USB key of at least 8GB to prepare recovery media.
