How to Fix Netflix Playback, Buffering, and Black-Screen Problems

Find the right Netflix fix by checking the exact symptom, device, error code, and whether one title or all titles fail.

The right Netflix fix depends on what you see, which device is affected, and whether one title or all titles fail. First note any error code, distinguish a black screen with sound from one without sound, and try another title. Then follow Netflix’s instructions for your device and symptom.

Start by narrowing down the problem

Before changing settings, check the scope of the failure. These comparisons help separate a title problem from a device or network problem.

  • Try another title. If only one show or movie fails, report that title through Netflix rather than treating the whole device as broken.
  • Try another device on the same network, if available. If Netflix fails on several devices, the network may be involved. If it fails on just one, focus on that device and its Netflix app.
  • Write down the exact symptom and message. Note whether Netflix buffers, freezes, returns to the title page, or shows a black screen—and whether you can hear sound. Record any error code exactly.

For a code or specific message, search Netflix’s error-code and troubleshooting index. Instructions vary by platform, so use the page that matches your device rather than applying a fix intended for a different one.

If Netflix keeps buffering or loading slowly

Netflix says slow loading or buffering may mean the device has a weak or unstable internet connection, or needs an update. Its buffering troubleshooting page provides platform-specific steps.

  1. Check whether the network allows Netflix. Public networks may block video services. On a private network, check whether the connection meets Netflix’s current recommendations. On a computer or mobile device, Netflix suggests testing with Fast.com and comparing the result with its speed guidance. Netflix’s recommendations can change, so don’t treat an old speed threshold as a guarantee.
  2. Restart the affected device. Follow the instructions for that device, and install an operating-system update if Netflix’s platform-specific steps call for one.
  3. Restart the home network. Turn off the device. Unplug the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in. Wait about one minute for the network to reconnect before trying Netflix again; some equipment takes longer.
  4. Improve the Wi-Fi signal. Move the device and router closer together, ideally into the same room. Put the router in an open, elevated spot and away from other wireless devices or appliances.
  5. Contact your internet provider if the problem persists. Explain whether other devices are affected and whether the device uses Wi-Fi or a wired connection. Netflix suggests checking Fast.com again before ending the troubleshooting conversation with your provider.

These checks come before buying equipment. A placement change or help from your provider may resolve a weak or unstable connection without replacing the router.

If the screen is black but you can hear sound

On a TV or TV-connected streaming device, sound with no picture can point to the device or its video connection. Netflix’s black-screen-with-sound instructions recommend restarting the device and checking the video connection.

  1. Fully restart the TV-connected device.
  2. Check that the HDMI cable is securely connected. If the problem remains, try reversing the cable ends, as Netflix suggests.
  3. If only one show or movie has a black screen while other titles play, report that title through your Viewing Activity instead of assuming the cable or device is at fault.

Try your existing cable before considering a replacement. HDMI troubleshooting is relevant to a TV-connected setup; it is not a universal fix for a phone or browser.

If the screen is black and there is no sound

A black or blank screen without sound has a separate troubleshooting flow. Netflix says the cause is usually an issue with the device or the cable connecting devices. Its no-sound black-screen page has separate guidance for smart TVs, streaming players, phones and tablets, and computers.

  • On a TV-connected streaming player, check that the TV is set to the correct input and that connected cables are secure.
  • On a phone, tablet, or computer, use the instructions for that platform rather than assuming the TV input or HDMI steps apply.
  • If basic checks do not help, follow the page’s device-specific steps; contact the device manufacturer or your internet provider when the symptoms point to their equipment or service.

If the platform-specific instructions call for clearing Netflix app data or reinstalling the app, first note the consequence: downloaded titles will be removed and you will be signed out. Have your Netflix password available before proceeding.

If Netflix will not play one title—or returns to its description

Only one show or movie fails

The message “We’re having trouble playing this title right now” can result from a network issue or a problem with the title. If other Netflix titles play normally, use Netflix’s instructions for this playback message and report the affected show or movie through Viewing Activity using “Report a Problem.” Netflix’s video-issues guide also separates single-title problems from issues affecting all titles.

Codes are clues, not interchangeable instructions. Search the exact code in Netflix’s troubleshooting index, then follow the instructions for the affected device. For example, Netflix describes these codes as follows:

  • Service error (-2): a network-connectivity issue is preventing the device from reaching Netflix. See Netflix’s instructions for error -2.
  • Video error (1.1): on Android, information stored on the device may need to be refreshed. Netflix’s error 1.1 page gives the relevant steps.
  • tvq-pb-101 (3.1.5): stored device data may be interfering with playback. Use Netflix’s instructions for this error.

Some fixes involving app data or reinstallation remove downloaded titles and sign you out. Check Netflix’s device-specific instructions before taking those steps, and make sure you can sign in again.

Restart a TV or streaming player safely

Netflix’s general TV and streaming-player support page describes a device restart that differs from the home-network restart above: make sure the device is fully off, leave it off for 15 seconds, then turn it back on. For a home-network restart, the page describes unplugging modem and router power for 30 seconds. Use the timing for the specific restart you are performing rather than combining the two procedures.
