A Steam pending transaction can mean either an unfinished order in Steam’s purchase history or a temporary authorization hold at your bank. Check Account Details > View purchase history first, then cancel an eligible order, correct billing details, switch checkout methods, or contact Steam Support. A pending bank entry alone does not prove Steam received the money.
Identify which transaction is pending
| Where you see it | What it means | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Steam purchase history | Steam recorded an incomplete or pending order. | Open the order and use Cancel this transaction if the option appears. |
| Bank or card account only | A failed checkout may have created an authorization hold. Steam says it will not collect a failed card transaction. | Check Steam history, avoid duplicate purchases, and ask the card issuer about its release policy. |
Steam explains this distinction in its incorrect billing address and pending bank charges guidance. Do not repeatedly click Buy while you are still determining whether Steam created an order.

1. Cancel the pending Steam order
- Open Steam or go to the Steam website.
- Click your account name in the upper-right corner.
- Select Account Details.
- Under Store & Purchase History, select View purchase history.
- Open the pending purchase.
- Select Cancel this transaction, then confirm with Cancel my purchase.
Steam documents the account-history route in its Purchasing and billing FAQ. The cancellation wording can vary by transaction type, and some unfinished orders do not offer cancellation. If several incomplete purchases are listed, open and handle each one separately. If no cancellation control appears, use Steam Support rather than assuming the order can be canceled.
Cancellation does not instantly remove a bank hold
Canceling an order changes Steam’s record; it does not control the card issuer’s authorization. Steam says it cannot force acceptance of a payment that failed address verification, even if the bank still displays a pending amount. The issuer releases that hold under its own policy.

- Visa Virtual eGift Cards are designed for online use only. Gift Cards are subject to Terms and Conditions: a.co/5bw3qXJ
- When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.
- This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
- Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
- This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.
2. Switch between Steam website and desktop client
If you checked out on the website, try the Steam desktop client; if you used the client, try the website. Steam’s official purchase FAQ also recommends:
- Disable or completely remove VPN and IP-proxy software.
- Restart the computer.
- Retry only after checking Purchase History for an existing order.
This addresses a failed checkout session. It is not a guaranteed way to erase an order already recorded as pending.

3. Correct the card billing information
For the error stating that your credit card was declined because an incorrect address was entered, compare the checkout billing address and ZIP or postal code with the details held by your card issuer. Steam says the address must match its records for the Address Verification System check.
A pending bank entry after this error does not mean Steam successfully received payment. Steam says it will not collect the failed transaction; the issuer should return or release the authorization according to its policy. If the details are correct and the error persists, contact the bank or use another payment method. See Steam’s billing-address guidance.

4. Use another available payment method
Checkout shows the payment methods available for your account’s current region. If the same card or provider keeps failing, choose another listed method instead of repeatedly submitting the same authorization. Steam’s Steam Wallet FAQ notes that Wallet funds can be combined with another method when the Wallet balance does not cover the full purchase.
5. Restore a missing Steam Wallet top-up
For a Wallet purchase that appears paid but has not increased your balance, follow Steam’s sequence:

- Check the email receipt and confirm that it says the purchase completed.
- Make sure you are signed in to the Steam account named on the receipt.
- Restart the Steam Client.
- If the balance is still missing more than two hours after a completed purchase, contact Steam Support.
A pending card authorization is not proof that a Wallet top-up completed. Verify both the receipt and Purchase History before trying again. The timing and steps are from Steam’s Wallet FAQ.
6. Clear Download Cache only for client or download problems
- Open the top-left Steam menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Click Clear Download Cache.
- Select Confirm, then sign in again.
Steam’s download-cache instructions say this signs you out but does not affect installed games. Steam documents it for games that will not download or start, not as a payment reset. Use it only when a completed purchase is missing or malfunctioning in the client; it is not a verified fix for a pending payment or bank authorization.

7. Retry a failed purchase from its saved cart
For eligible failed purchases, Steam saves the cart for exactly 72 hours. Discounts attached to the failed order remain with that saved cart during the retry window.
- Open the email Steam sent with the saved-cart link, or open Purchase History.
- Find the qualifying entry marked with a shopping-cart icon.
- Select the purchase, then choose I want to repurchase this saved cart.
Steam Support cannot extend the 72-hour period. Steam lists purchases that may not receive a saved cart, including coupon purchases, bundles, recurring subscriptions, and failures that occurred before payment was attempted on the checkout page. Details are in Steam’s saved-cart FAQ.
8. Contact Steam Support with the right evidence
- Open Steam Support and sign in.
- Select Purchases.
- Select I can’t complete my purchase on the Steam Store.
- Choose the relevant purchase or issue and follow the prompts.
Include the item, exact date and amount, Steam’s status (pending, failed, or completed), payment method, bank status, and screenshots of any error. Never send your full card number, expiration date, or CVV. Steam says Support will never request those details; see its unrecognized-charges guidance.
When the charge is completed but the item is missing
Check Account Details > View purchase history and your Library before buying again. Steam notes that it may temporarily grant access while a card payment is being authorized; if the card is later declined, Steam can remove the game from the Library. Its explanation is available at Steam is asking me to purchase a game I already paid for. If Steam marks the order completed but the content remains missing, contact Support instead of placing a duplicate order.

Community Market transactions follow different rules
Do not apply the normal Steam Store procedure to a Community Market transaction. Market purchases use Steam Wallet funds. Completed Market purchases are final and cannot be reversed or refunded. Active buy orders can be canceled from the Community Market, and they may remain active until matched, canceled, or automatically canceled under Steam’s listed conditions. See the Community Market FAQ.
Quick Recap
Timing, refunds, and common misconceptions
- There is no universal 24-hour rule. Steam specifies two hours for escalating a missing completed Wallet top-up and 72 hours for an eligible saved cart, but does not publish one clearing time for every pending transaction.
- A pending bank charge does not prove Steam charged you. A failed purchase can leave an authorization that Steam will not collect.
- Steam Support cannot force a declined card payment through. This is especially true when address verification failed.
- A refund does not immediately remove a bank entry. Steam says approved refunds can take up to seven days to appear. When an authorization is canceled, a bank may take up to 30 days to confirm that Steam never received the funds and release the hold. See Steam’s common refund questions.
- Changing the download region is not a verified payment fix. Steam’s current purchase guidance instead points to the website/client switch, VPN or proxy removal, restart, payment correction, and Support.
- There is no documented command-line reset. Steam provides no command that cancels, completes, or clears a pending purchase.
