If your PS5 DualSense controller keeps blinking blue, it is usually failing to complete pairing or reconnecting—not proof that the controller is broken. Start by connecting it directly to the PS5 with the included or a known-good USB data cable, then press the PS button. If that does not work, restart the console, reset the controller, and work through the checks below.
First, confirm which light is blinking
This guide is for the light bar on a DualSense controller. Sony does not identify a separate “blinking blue” fault code; its controller instructions show the light bar blinking during pairing, followed by the player indicator lighting when pairing succeeds. A controller that continues blinking has not completed pairing or reconnection. Sony’s controller support describes the pairing behavior.
The PS5 console has its own power indicator. It can briefly blink blue during startup before turning white; that is not the controller light. See PS5 console support if the light is on the console.
1. Pair the controller with a USB cable
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the controller directly to the console using the USB cable included with the console or controller, or a compatible USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and the player indicator to light up.
- After pairing succeeds, disconnect the cable if you want to use the controller wirelessly.
This is Sony’s standard PS5 pairing procedure. A controller needs to be paired with the particular PS5 console where you want to use it. See Sony’s controller instructions and the DualSense instruction manual.

If the cable charges but does not pair
A USB cable can provide power without carrying the data needed for pairing. Try the original cable or a known-good USB data-and-charging cable, connected directly to the PS5. Sony recommends the included cable or a compatible cable when reconnecting a controller; see Reconnect a DualSense controller.
2. Fully restart the PS5
A complete shutdown is more useful for troubleshooting than relying on Rest Mode alone.

5. Check whether the controller is targeting another device
Current DualSense software supports up to four registered device pairings, stored in four slots. If you have set up multiple devices, the controller may be trying to connect to a different one. The target device must be turned on with Bluetooth enabled.
| Pairing slot | Hold these buttons for more than five seconds |
|---|---|
| 1 | PS + Triangle |
| 2 | PS + Circle |
| 3 | PS + Cross |
| 4 | PS + Square |
The light bar and player indicators flash twice when the slot-switch command is accepted. See Sony’s instructions for pairing a DualSense with other devices and its announcement about multiple-device pairing. Although the controller can store pairings for supported devices, it still needs to be paired with the specific PS5 console on which it is being used.

6. Update PS5 and controller software
Check for a PS5 system update
On the console, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If an update is available, select Update System Software. To see the installed version, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information; the console reports Up to date if no newer version is available. See Sony’s PS5 system software instructions and version-check guidance.
Check for a DualSense device update
Go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. Sony says controller-device updates are added through PS5 system software updates, and this menu lets you check manually. You can also update a controller on a Windows PC using Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application. Sony controller support and DualSense support for PC and other devices
7. Use Safe Mode if no controller connects normally
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the console’s power button for about three seconds.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
Safe Mode requires a USB-connected controller. Its options include Restart PS5, Repair Console Storage, Update System Software, Restore Default Settings, Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, Reset PS5, and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). For system-feature or performance problems, Sony identifies Clear System Software Cache as an option; Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database. Both Reset PS5 options delete user data, and reinstalling system software also removes the PS5 system software. Do not use either reset as an early pairing fix. See PS5 Safe Mode instructions.
8. Isolate the controller, cable, or console
- Try a second controller. If it pairs successfully, the original controller or its cable is more likely to be the issue. If neither pairs, investigate the PS5, its USB ports, or system software.
- Try another USB port and a confirmed data cable. Keep the connection direct to the console while testing.
- Test the DualSense on another supported device. Sony supports USB and Bluetooth connections on supported Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and tvOS versions. See supported-device and connection guidance.
- Inspect the USB-C port. Look for lint, debris, looseness, or physical damage. Do not force the connector or put metal objects in the port.
If the controller still will not pair after a reset, a confirmed-good cable, software updates, and a test on another device, use PlayStation Repairs for diagnosis.

Common fixes that are wrong or outdated
- “Blinking blue proves the controller is broken.” It does not. Sony documents blinking during pairing; persistent blinking means pairing has not completed, but the light alone does not establish a hardware failure.
- “Resetting erases the pairing.” Sony says the DualSense reset procedure does not affect pairing settings.
- “Hold PS + Share to pair.” The DualSense button is labeled Create. Create + PS enters Bluetooth pairing mode; standard PS5 pairing is USB connection followed by pressing PS.
- “Any USB-C cable will work.” Not necessarily: a power-only cable may charge without carrying pairing data.
- “Reinstall system software first.” Reinstalling is a destructive Safe Mode option that deletes user data. Try the non-destructive pairing, reset, restart, and update steps first.
- “You must pair it again every time you change devices.” Current DualSense support includes four stored device pairings and button-based slot switching, though the controller still must be paired with the PS5 console where it will be used.
Recommended order to troubleshoot
- Confirm the blinking light is on the controller, not the console.
- Use the original or a known-good USB data cable, connect directly to the PS5, and press PS.
- Fully turn off and restart the PS5.
- Reset the DualSense for at least five seconds, then reconnect by USB.
- If another controller works, try Bluetooth Accessories pairing.
- Update PS5 system software and DualSense device software.
- Use Safe Mode only if normal pairing still fails.
- Test another controller, cable, USB port, or supported device to isolate the fault.
- If the problem follows the controller, use PlayStation Repairs.
