Disconnect accessories, charge it, reset the display path, and perform the force-restart sequence for your model. If that does not restore Windows, use a Surface USB recovery drive or the appropriate Windows Recovery Environment tools, understanding that a reset can erase personal data.
The exact screen matters: a drive-cache icon, blinking cursor, UEFI boot-device message, Recovery screen, or Automatic Repair loop requires a different branch. Follow the matching steps below rather than repeatedly holding the power button at random.

What the logo-then-black-screen symptom means
Microsoft treats a Surface that remains at the Microsoft or Windows logo on a black background as a stuck-on-logo startup problem. At that stage, firmware has started and the display has shown the logo, but Windows has not completed its startup sequence. The cause can be a temporary power or display-state problem, a failed boot configuration, an inaccessible internal drive, or damaged Windows startup files.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo not confuse the following screens:
- Windows logo on a plain black screen: use the stuck-on-logo procedure first.
- Drive-cache icon: the Surface may be rebuilding SSD cache after an unexpected shutdown.
- Black screen with a blinking cursor: UEFI/BIOS may not be finding a boot device.
- “Couldn’t find a bootable operating system” in UEFI: check the boot configuration and internal storage selection.
- Recovery or Automatic Repair: use the Windows Recovery Environment options instead of the basic logo procedure.
Microsoft’s official guidance reviewed in 2026 does not publish a prevalence or success-rate percentage for this symptom. Its timings are procedural: charge for at least 15 minutes, hold the power button for about 20 seconds on current models, and wait at least five minutes for a drive-cache rebuild.

Before you start: remove variables and charge the Surface
- Shut down or leave the Surface at the black screen while you remove every external device: USB drives, SD cards, USB hubs, other USB accessories, external monitors, Surface Dock, and Type Cover. A peripheral can alter the boot order, hold the system in a bad power state, or create a display-output conflict.
- Connect the correct Surface power supply directly to the device. Leave it charging for at least 15 minutes before trying recovery steps. A low battery can make a force restart appear ineffective.
- If you have a keyboard, press
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + Bonce. This resets the Windows display path. You may hear a beep or see a brief flicker; that response is useful, but the shortcut cannot repair damaged boot files. - Keep the Surface on a stable, hard surface and allow it to cool. Do not open the case or disconnect the internal battery while following these software procedures.
Force-restart the Surface using the correct model sequence
Choose the sequence that matches your hardware. Do not combine the two procedures or keep buttons held indefinitely.
| Surface family | Procedure |
|---|---|
| Surface Pro 5th Gen and later; Surface Pro X; Surface Laptop families; Surface Go; Surface Studio; Surface Book 2 and later | Press and hold the power button until the Surface shuts down and restarts and the Windows logo appears again—about 20 seconds—then release it. |
| Surface Pro, Pro 2, Pro 3, Pro 4; Surface Book; Surface 2; Surface 3; Surface RT | Press and hold Volume Up and the power button together for about 15 seconds. Release both, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button normally. |
Microsoft describes the current-model instruction this way: “Press and hold down the power button until your Surface shuts down and restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.” The logo can appear more than once during the restart. Give it several minutes after releasing the button before deciding that the attempt failed.
If the screen returns to the logo and then goes black again, repeat the sequence only once after confirming that accessories are removed and the charger is connected. Repeated forced shutdowns can push Windows into Recovery Mode, which is useful for the recovery branches below but does not itself repair the underlying cause.

If the Surface shows a drive-cache icon
A drive-cache icon is a separate startup state. After an unexpected shutdown, the SSD cache may be rebuilding. Leave the Surface alone for at least five minutes rather than interrupting it immediately. Keep the power supply connected.

If the icon remains after that wait, perform the model-appropriate force restart above. If Windows still does not load, proceed to a Surface USB recovery drive. A cache icon that repeatedly returns can also indicate storage or Windows corruption, so note whether it appears after every restart.
If Windows Recovery or a BCD screen appears
After two failed boots, Windows may open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options. Start with the least destructive option that addresses your symptom.
Try System Restore first when a restore point exists
Select System Restore and choose a restore point created before the logo problem began. Restore points affect Windows system files, drivers, and settings; they are not a substitute for a personal-file backup. If no restore point is available, return to Advanced options.

bootrec /scanosbootrec /rebuildbcdbootrec /fixmbrbootrec /fixboot
Read each result before moving to the next command. A command can report that it found no Windows installations or that access is denied; that result is diagnostic, not proof that the Surface is fixed. WinRE may ask for the BitLocker recovery key before it permits access to the encrypted Windows volume. Use the key associated with that Surface, and do not guess repeatedly.
When the commands finish, choose Continue to attempt a normal boot. If the logo-black-screen cycle returns, go back to Advanced options or use recovery media rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.
If the screen says “Couldn’t find a bootable operating system”
This message means UEFI is not finding a usable boot device. Enter the Surface UEFI interface using the on-screen instructions for your model, then open Boot configuration. Confirm that Windows Boot Manager and the internal storage are selected and that an unintended USB or network option is not taking priority.

Save the UEFI change, exit, and force-restart. If the message persists, try a Surface USB recovery drive. If UEFI does not list the internal storage at all, or the storage selection repeatedly disappears, stop software troubleshooting and request Microsoft or authorized service; the behavior can indicate a hardware-level storage or mainboard problem.

If you see a blinking cursor on a blank screen
Microsoft’s Windows guidance associates a blank screen with a blinking cursor with UEFI/BIOS being unable to find a boot device. First remove USB and SD media, confirm the internal Windows Boot Manager selection in UEFI, and force-restart.
If repeated forced shutdowns enter WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Depending on what changed immediately before the failure, Startup Settings can provide Safe Mode, while System Restore can reverse a recent driver or system change. In Safe Mode, a recently updated graphics driver can be rolled back or updated through Device Manager. Do not remove a driver blindly if the display works only through a specialized Surface component; record the existing driver first.
If Automatic Repair keeps looping
On the Automatic Repair screen, select Restart once. If it returns, choose Advanced options and then select the least destructive applicable action:
- Continue: attempt to boot Windows normally.
- System Restore: revert system changes when a suitable restore point exists.
- Command Prompt: use the bootrec sequence when startup configuration is suspected.
- Reset this PC: reinstall Windows when other recovery choices fail, after deciding whether personal files should be retained.
If Automatic Repair returns after these choices, use Surface recovery media or arrange service. A loop is not evidence that Windows is still repairing successfully; it means the same startup failure is being encountered again.

Create and use a Surface USB recovery drive
A USB flash drive for Surface recovery is the appropriate physical item for this step. Use a separate Windows computer to create or download the recovery media for the affected Surface model, and use a drive whose contents can be erased. Recovery media is model-specific enough that you should identify the Surface family before creating it.
Boot from the recovery drive
- Shut the Surface down completely.
- Insert the Surface USB recovery drive.
- Press and hold Volume Down while pressing and releasing the power button.
- Release Volume Down when the Surface logo appears.
- Follow the recovery screen’s instructions. If a BitLocker prompt appears, enter the correct recovery key.
The available recovery choices depend on the media and the state of the installation. Prefer repair or restore options that preserve data when they are offered. Before selecting a reset or reinstall, disconnect unrelated external drives so you do not accidentally select the wrong storage device.
Understand the data-loss warning
Microsoft warns that a recovery drive can return the Surface to factory condition, reinstall Windows, delete personal files, reset settings, and remove installed apps. Back up files first whenever the Surface can still reach WinRE, Safe Mode, or another working environment. If the only available choice is a destructive reset and the files are important, stop and seek professional data-recovery or authorized service before proceeding.
When a reset is appropriate—and when to stop
Reset this PC is a last-resort software step for a Surface that cannot boot after display, power, boot-configuration, restore, and recovery-media attempts. Read every confirmation screen: “Keep my files” still removes installed applications and resets settings, while a full removal erases personal data. Have installation credentials, game saves that were not synchronized, and recovery keys available before starting.
Stop troubleshooting and request service when UEFI cannot see internal storage, the Surface will not remain powered even with the correct charger, the device becomes unusually hot, the display shows physical damage, or recovery media cannot start on a known-good port and drive. These signs require hardware diagnosis rather than more forced restarts.
Windows 10 consideration for older Surface models
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s reset and recovery guidance reviewed in 2026. A Surface that still runs Windows 10 may continue to start, but it no longer receives normal Windows 10 support after that date. Resolve the boot failure first; then check the exact Surface model and Windows edition to determine whether an upgrade path is supported before changing the operating system.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
| What you see | Next action | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Windows logo, then plain black screen | Remove accessories, charge 15 minutes, reset display, and use the model-specific force restart. | The cycle returns after one clean attempt. |
| Drive-cache icon | Wait at least five minutes, then force-restart. | The icon returns or Windows still will not load. |
| Recovery or BCD screen | Use WinRE Advanced options, System Restore, or the bootrec commands. | Commands fail, BitLocker access is unavailable, or the loop continues. |
| UEFI boot-device error | Select Windows Boot Manager/internal storage in Boot configuration. | Internal storage is absent or the error persists. |
| Blinking cursor | Check UEFI boot device, then use Safe Mode, driver rollback/update, or System Restore if WinRE appears. | No boot device is detected or recovery cannot start. |
| Automatic Repair loop | Try Restart, Advanced options, System Restore, Command Prompt, or Reset this PC in that order of risk. | Automatic Repair repeats after recovery attempts. |

It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
