Every game tick, Minecraft updates loaded entities. That includes hostile and passive mobs, villagers, vehicles, dropped items, projectiles, players and many modded objects. If code run during one of those updates throws an exception, Forge may label the crash Ticking entity. Forge forum moderator Choonster described it as “just a generic message used for any crash report that happens when an entity is being ticked.” The words are therefore a symptom category, not a diagnosis.
A ticking block entity is the equivalent failure for a block that stores persistent data and runs tick logic. Furnaces, chests, pipes, machines and other modded devices can have a ticker that executes every tick. A broken recipe, invalid inventory entry, missing capability or mod bug can make that ticker fail whenever the chunk loads.

The report normally contains the useful evidence: entity type, UUID, position, dimension, mod namespace and the first relevant stack-trace lines. Do not start by deleting random mobs or removing mods. First determine whether the crashing object is mobile, a player, an item, or a block entity at fixed coordinates.
Do this before changing the world
Stop writes and preserve a rollback
Stop the server cleanly if it is still responding. Then copy the entire world directory, including all dimensions, and the server configuration to a separate location. Keep the original copy read-only or clearly labeled. Also preserve the latest crash reports. A forced shutdown during a failed tick can leave additional unsaved or partially written data, so never make your only copy the one you are about to edit.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Record the Minecraft version, Forge build and complete mod list.
- Copy the world folder and relevant configuration files before killing an entity, changing a setting or resetting a chunk.
- Make a dated note of the reported UUID, coordinates, dimension and every change you make.
- Use a test copy for mod updates, rollbacks and configuration experiments.
Locate the newest crash report
Open the server’s crash-reports directory and sort by modification time. Read the newest file, not an older report with a similar heading. If the server produced a launcher or console log as well, keep it with the report; the first mod-specific exception is often easier to see there.
How to identify the offending object
Capture the identifying fields
Write down these fields exactly as shown:
- Entity Type: the registered entity identifier, often including a mod namespace.
- UUID: the unique identifier used to target one entity rather than every mob of that type.
- Pos or coordinates: the x, y and z location at the time of the crash.
- Dimension: the Overworld, Nether, End or a modded dimension in which the chunk is loaded.
- Mod namespace and stack trace: the first lines naming a mod’s package, event handler or renderer.
A stack trace may contain several libraries. The first mod-owned class involved in the tick is a useful lead, but it is not proof that the newest library in the trace is at fault. Search the exact entity identifier and mod version in that mod’s issue tracker or release notes after the world is safe.
Classify the crash
| What the report identifies | What it means | Typical recovery target |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile entity, mob, vehicle, projectile or dropped item | An entity is failing during its update tick. | Kill or remove the single UUID, or move it out of the loaded area. |
| Player | The player’s entity or nearby loaded data triggers the failure during login or movement. | Have another operator load the area, remove the nearby object, then kill or relocate the affected player. |
| Block entity, tile entity or ticker | A block at fixed coordinates is executing faulty persistent-data logic. | Remove or repair the block at the reported coordinates, not a random mobile entity. |
| No clear entity, but a chunk or region is named | The failing data may be in a chunk, or the report may be too damaged to identify one object. | Use an offline NBT editor or reset only the affected chunk after a verified backup. |
Choose the least destructive recovery
The right method depends on whether the server can remain online and how much data you can afford to lose.

Fix a crash while the server is online
Target the reported entity
If the server stays up long enough to accept commands, give an operator the UUID and coordinates from the report. Use the server console or an in-game operator command to target that UUID with the version-appropriate kill command. In versions that accept a UUID as an entity argument, the form is:
/kill <entity-UUID>
Some versions require a target selector or player name rather than a raw UUID. In that case, use the selector syntax supported by that Minecraft release, or remove the entity with an offline editor. Do not use a broad command such as killing every entity in the dimension unless you have explicitly accepted the loss of items, pets, minecarts and other entities.
After the command succeeds, confirm that the server remains stable, stop it cleanly and make a fresh backup. A successful kill removes the immediate trigger; it does not explain why the entity became invalid.
Move an entity or player out of the failing chunk
If the report points to a player or a chunk that can be loaded safely by someone else, teleport the player to a known safe location with the release-appropriate teleport command, for example:
/tp <player> <x> <y> <z>
Use coordinates in a chunk that contains no suspected machine or entity. Moving the player can break a login loop long enough to inspect and remove the real object. It is not a permanent repair if the offending data remains in the original chunk.

Recover a player who cannot join
A player-specific ticking crash may occur while that player is being loaded, preventing login. Have another operator or trusted player load the world from a safe location. Remove or kill the nearby object identified in the report, then kill or relocate the affected player. If the server crashes before anyone can reach the area, use the emergency or offline procedures below. Do not delete the player’s data as a first response; that can discard inventory, advancements and other persistent information.
Handle a ticking block entity
A block entity has coordinates rather than a useful mobile target. Travel to the reported dimension and position only if doing so does not reproduce the crash. Remove the exact machine, pipe, chest or other block with an operator command or an appropriate world-editing tool. If the block contains valuable inventory, preserve the backup before breaking it; a faulty block entity may not drop its contents safely. Replacing the block with a clean instance can restore the area, but the mod’s configuration or saved data may recreate the problem.
Use Forge’s emergency removal setting when startup fails
Older Forge configurations may expose removeErroringEntities and removeErroringTileEntities. The first applies to mobile entities; the second applies to ticking block entities (also called tile entities in older terminology). Option names and file locations vary by Minecraft and Forge generation.
- Stop the server and make a complete world and configuration backup.
- Find the configuration used by that server and version. Legacy installations may use
forge.cfg. Modern Forge uses TOML configuration, with server settings commonly in the server folder or a world’sserverconfigdirectory depending on the config type. - Set only the relevant option to
true. UseremoveErroringEntitiesfor a mobile entity orremoveErroringTileEntitiesfor a block entity. - Start the server once and watch the console and newest crash report. Forge should remove the object that throws during ticking, allowing the world to load.
- Stop the server after recovery, verify the affected area and set the option back to
falsebefore normal operation.
This is a destructive recovery switch, not a performance setting. Leaving it enabled can silently delete future broken entities or machines and hide a recurring mod problem. If the option is absent, renamed or ignored, do not paste a setting from a different Forge generation into the file; use the version’s actual configuration format or edit the world offline.
Edit the world while the server is stopped
Remove one entity with an NBT editor
When the server cannot remain up, use an NBT-aware world editor that supports the Minecraft version and modded entity data. Open a copy of the world, select the reported dimension and locate the chunk at the crash coordinates. Find the entity whose UUID matches the report and remove only that entity. Save to a new output folder, then start a test server with the edited copy.

Preserve the entity’s UUID, coordinates and original NBT in your incident notes before deleting it. If the editor shows several similar entities, compare UUIDs rather than relying on type or position alone. Modded entities can carry inventories, passengers, owner data and capabilities; deleting the wrong one may create a second problem.
Repair or remove a block entity
For a ticking block entity, select the block at the exact reported x, y and z coordinates. You may be able to remove its block-entity tag while keeping the block, or replace the entire block with air and rebuild it. The safer choice depends on the mod and the corruption shown in the report. Keep the original copy because stripping tags can destroy inventories, energy buffers, recipes, upgrades or links to other machines.

Reset only the affected chunk as a last resort
A region or chunk selector can delete and regenerate one chunk when no individual object can be isolated. This can remove every build, chest, inventory, machine, entity and mod-specific record in that chunk. Confirm the chunk boundaries from the reported coordinates, make a second backup, and record the reset area. Never reset an entire region merely because one chunk is named unless you have accepted the much larger loss.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Repair the underlying mod or data problem
Once the world loads, do not treat removal as the finished fix. Identify the responsible mod from the namespace and stack trace, then check that mod’s issue tracker and release notes for the exact Minecraft and Forge versions you run. Test each change in a copy:
- Update the mod to a release that supports your Minecraft and Forge build.
- Roll back if the crash began immediately after an update.
- Change the mod’s server configuration if the trace points to a feature, recipe or machine setting.
- Replace a corrupted machine or entity with a clean instance after preserving its inventory and configuration where possible.
- Remove a mod only after checking whether its blocks or entities remain in saved chunks. Deleting a jar without migrating that data can cause missing-content or additional load failures.
After testing, load the edited copy, visit the affected dimension and let the relevant chunk run for several minutes. Then stop cleanly, copy the validated world to production and retain the pre-change backup. If the same UUID or coordinates fail again, the data or mod interaction has not actually been repaired.

Diagnose lag before the crash with Forge’s profiler
If the server becomes slow before it crashes, Forge’s debug profiler can show whether entities or block entities are consuming the tick. Press F3 + L in the client while connected to the server. The capture runs for 10 seconds and writes a ZIP file under debug/profiling. Its report includes entity and block-entity sections. Use those sections to identify a growing population of one entity type or a machine cluster that should be inspected before another crash.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe profiler does not repair corrupt data and its 10-second capture is not a benchmark of long-term performance. Use it as an additional clue alongside the crash report, especially when the server is still playable but approaching a failure.
Common failure patterns and the correct branch
The crash repeats immediately after every restart
The bad object is probably saved in a chunk loaded during startup or in the player’s login location. Stop retrying with the original world. Use the one-time Forge removal setting or remove the matching UUID/block entity offline. Repeated boots can create more writes without changing the trigger.
The report names a player but killing the player does not help
The player may only be the first entity loaded near a broken machine or another invalid object. Have an operator load the area, remove the reported block entity or nearby object, and then relocate the player. If the player’s own NBT is damaged, restore that player from a backup copy rather than deleting the entire world.
The report says ticking block entity
Do not search for a mob UUID. Use the coordinates and dimension to locate the block, and inspect the mod’s machine or storage data. Remove or repair that block entity, then investigate the mod version and configuration that produced the invalid tick.
The setting appears to do nothing
Check that you edited the configuration actually read by the running server, that the option name matches the Forge generation, and that the value is valid TOML or legacy configuration syntax. Confirm the server was fully stopped before saving. If the report changes from an entity error to a block-entity error, set only the corresponding option for the next one-time boot.
An offline edit causes a new crash
Restore the untouched backup and repeat the edit on a copy. Compare the editor’s saved dimension, chunk and entity path with the crash report. A malformed NBT save or deletion of a required companion object can be worse than the original failure; use a version-compatible editor and make one change at a time.
Prevent the next outage
- Rotate several world backups instead of overwriting one backup forever.
- Keep crash reports with the backup from the same date.
- Pin Minecraft, Forge and mod versions that you have tested together.
- Document entity UUIDs, dimensions, coordinates and configuration changes after each incident.
- Run updates, rollbacks and configuration changes on a copy before production.
- Use the profiler when lag rises so entity or block-entity growth is visible before a hard crash.
- Set emergency removal options back to
falseimmediately after a recovery boot.
The durable solution is not merely getting the server past one startup. It is preserving a rollback, removing only the object proven to be failing, and correcting the mod or saved data that made its tick invalid.
