How to Fix a Very Slow Computer Startup on Windows 10 and 11

By VGSources Team 9 min read

A slow Windows startup usually comes from too many startup apps or background services, pending maintenance, or a recent change. First identify whether the delay is before the sign-in screen, after you sign in, or a complete boot failure. Then work through the least risky, reversible fixes before using recovery tools.

1. Identify exactly where startup is slow

Do not change settings until you know which part of the boot process is taking time. Turn the computer on and note when the delay occurs.

Before the Windows sign-in screen

If the computer spends a long time showing the manufacturer logo, a spinning circle, or a blank screen before the password or PIN prompt, Windows startup apps are less likely to be the immediate cause. The delay can be related to a recent update, driver, hardware initialization, or a damaged boot component. If Windows eventually reaches the sign-in screen, continue with the maintenance and clean-boot checks below. If it cannot reach that screen, use the recovery section instead.

After you sign in

If the desktop appears but remains unusable while icons, launchers, cloud clients, or other programs load, startup apps and non-Microsoft services are the first things to test. This is the stage where Task Manager’s Startup impact information is useful.

Record what changed

Write down whether the slowdown began after a Windows update, a driver installation, a new application, or a malware warning. That detail determines whether you should start with updates, a clean boot, or recovery. Windows 10 and Windows 11 menus can differ by edition, build, and update level, so verify the version before following a menu-specific recovery path.

2. Disable only nonessential Startup apps

Microsoft says that applications launched at startup can lengthen boot time and increase background resource use. There is no universal safe list: Startup impact is calculated for your particular device, and an item that is unnecessary on one PC may be required on another.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, choose More details.
  2. Select Startup apps in the left navigation (Windows 11) or the Startup tab (some Windows 10 builds).
  3. Review the Startup impact column. Sort by that column if you want the highest-impact entries together.
  4. Select a program you recognize as nonessential, choose Disable, and repeat for other clearly optional high-impact items.
  5. Restart Windows and check whether the sign-in-to-desktop delay has changed.

Disable one group of obvious nonessential entries rather than everything at once. Keep software that you deliberately need immediately after sign-in, such as a required accessibility utility, a security component, or a work application. If you are unsure what an entry does, leave it enabled and identify it first; the impact label measures startup cost, not whether disabling the item is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore an item

Task Manager keeps the same list, so a change is reversible. Return to Task Manager > Startup apps, select the disabled entry, and choose Enable. Restart again to confirm whether that program was responsible. Do not uninstall an application merely because it appears in this list; disabling it is the safer diagnostic test.

3. Complete the basic Windows maintenance checks

Microsoft’s performance guidance places updates, temporary-file cleanup, and a malware scan among the first-line remedies. Perform these checks after recording your startup-app changes so that you can tell which action helped.

Install pending Windows updates

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Windows Update on Windows 11. On Windows 10, choose Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.

If the slowdown started immediately after an update, note the update date before changing anything else. A later cumulative update may resolve the issue; if Windows will not boot after the change, use the recovery options described below rather than repeatedly forcing normal restarts.

Remove temporary files carefully

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Open Temporary files and review the categories Windows has selected.
  3. Remove temporary data you no longer need, leaving personal folders such as Downloads selected only when you have checked their contents.

Temporary-file cleanup is maintenance, not a guaranteed startup-speed measure. It is useful when Windows is short on working space or when damaged temporary data is contributing to a problem, but it does not establish the cause by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a malware scan

Use the security software already installed on the PC and start a malware scan from its protection controls. With Microsoft Defender, the path is Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, followed by the available scan option. Let the scan finish, follow its remediation instructions, and restart if it requests one. A malware warning is a reason to scan; it is not proof that malware is the cause of every slow boot.

4. Use a clean boot to isolate third-party services

A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting. It starts Windows with Microsoft services hidden and third-party services and startup items turned off. Microsoft explains that if the problem disappears in this state, you can identify the responsible app or service by turning items back on systematically and restarting.

Enter clean boot configuration

  1. Press Windows key+R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Services tab.
  3. Check Hide all Microsoft services. This prevents the next command from disabling core Microsoft services.
  4. Choose Disable all, then select Apply.
  5. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
  6. In Task Manager’s Startup apps list, disable the enabled third-party startup items, close Task Manager, and select OK in System Configuration.
  7. Restart the PC and test the time from sign-in to a usable desktop.

Interpret the result

  • Startup improves: a disabled third-party service or startup item is implicated. Return to System Configuration and Task Manager, re-enable about half of the disabled entries, restart, and test. Continue dividing the remaining entries into smaller groups until one item or a small group reproduces the delay.
  • Startup does not improve: restore the normal configuration and investigate updates, boot components, or hardware-related causes instead. A clean boot has ruled out only the third-party items that were disabled; it has not proved that Windows itself is healthy.

Return to normal startup

Open msconfig again, select Normal startup on the General tab (or re-enable the services and startup items you intentionally disabled), apply the change, and restart. Leaving a clean boot in place can prevent software you rely on from launching, so use it only while testing.

5. Recover Windows when it will not start

Startup Repair and System Restore are recovery tools for boot failures or problems that follow a recent change. They are not routine speed-tuning steps.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter Windows Recovery Environment

If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. You can also use the advanced-startup control in Settings: on Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now; on Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. Follow the on-screen restart into the recovery menus. Exact labels can vary by build.

Run Startup Repair

  1. In Windows Recovery Environment, choose Troubleshoot.
  2. Choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Startup Repair and choose the Windows installation when prompted.
  4. Let the repair complete, then restart normally and test.

Startup Repair targets problems that prevent Windows from booting. It is not expected to make a normally booting computer significantly faster when startup apps are the real cause.

Undo a recent change

If the failure began after an update, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates when that option is offered. If the problem followed an application, driver, or configuration change and restore points are available, choose System Restore and select a restore point from before the change. Read the confirmation screen so you know which programs and settings will be affected.

Reset or reinstall only after a backup

If Startup Repair and rollback options do not restore booting, a Windows reset or reinstall is a last resort. Back up important files first whenever you can. These procedures change the Windows installation and can remove applications or data depending on the option selected; follow the edition-specific prompts carefully and keep installation or recovery media available if the process requires it.

6. Choose the next action by symptom and risk

The table below puts the main choices in the order most people need them. “Reversible” means you can undo the setting or return to the previous state without reinstalling Windows; recovery actions have greater impact.

Action Best match Diagnostic value Data consideration
Disable selected Startup apps Long delay after sign-in Shows whether a launch item contributes to the delay Reversible in Task Manager
Windows Update, temporary-file cleanup, malware scan General slowdown or a recent maintenance warning Addresses common maintenance causes but does not isolate one app Review files before deleting temporary categories
Clean boot Slow desktop or uncertainty about a third-party service Strong isolation test for non-Microsoft services and startup items Reversible; restore normal startup after testing
Startup Repair Windows cannot complete boot Checks and repairs startup-related components Use from Recovery Environment; it is not a normal speed tweak
System Restore or Uninstall Updates Failure or severe slowdown after a recent change Tests whether rolling back that change restores operation Review the affected programs and settings before confirming
Reset or reinstall Persistent failure after other recovery options Rebuilds the Windows installation rather than identifying one cause Back up important files first; applications and data may be removed

7. Troubleshoot the result instead of guessing

If disabling Startup apps helped

Re-enable entries one at a time or in small groups, restarting after each change. When the delay returns, leave the responsible item disabled while you check for an update from its publisher or change its own “start with Windows” setting. If you need the program at other times, launch it manually instead of making it part of boot.

If a clean boot helped but Startup apps did not

The cause is probably a non-Microsoft service rather than a visible Startup apps entry. Use the half-at-a-time method in System Configuration, keeping Hide all Microsoft services selected on every pass. Record each group you test so you can return to the last known-good configuration.

If neither test helped

Check whether the problem is actually before sign-in, whether it began with an update or driver, and whether Windows is showing a malware warning. Use the maintenance checks if they are incomplete. If Windows cannot boot reliably, stop normal troubleshooting and use Recovery Environment tools.

If startup time varies from one boot to the next

Intermittent delays are harder to diagnose by impression alone. Test after a full restart, not only after sleep or hibernation, and change one category at a time. There is no authoritative universal number of seconds that defines a slow boot and no fixed number of startup apps that is safe to disable; your device, edition, and installed software determine the result.

8. When an SSD or RAM upgrade belongs in the plan

An SSD or memory upgrade may matter, but the available guidance does not support recommending a particular part without model-specific diagnosis. First establish whether the delay is before sign-in, after sign-in, or a boot failure, and complete the reversible software tests. Only then check the computer’s model, supported hardware, storage condition, and memory configuration before buying anything. An upgrade cannot correct a damaged Windows installation or a misbehaving startup service.

9. A practical order of operations

  1. Measure the delay stage and note recent updates, drivers, applications, or malware warnings.
  2. Disable only clearly nonessential, high-impact Startup apps and restart.
  3. Install pending Windows updates, clear reviewed temporary files, and run a malware scan.
  4. Use a clean boot if the cause remains unclear, then re-enable items in groups to isolate it.
  5. If Windows will not start, enter Windows Recovery Environment and try Startup Repair.
  6. For a problem tied to a recent change, use System Restore or uninstall the recent update.
  7. Back up important files before considering a reset or reinstall.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, log app crashes, and provide privacy and file-shredding tools. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.
