Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A failed Windows upgrade is usually recoverable. Start by recording the exact code in Settings > Windows Update > Update history, then restart with peripherals disconnected, verify storage and connectivity, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, repair damaged components with DISM and SFC, and retry. If Windows Update still fails, use the Windows Update Assistant on a compatible x86/64 PC or official installation media for an in-place repair.
Start with the failure details
Do not begin by repeatedly clicking Check for updates. The error code determines whether you should remove a driver, uninstall an application, free storage, repair system files, or change upgrade methods. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and record the complete code, including every digit and letter. Generic messages such as “We couldn’t complete the updates” are not specific enough to choose a safe fix.

Prepare the computer before another attempt
- Restart Windows once. A previous setup process can leave cleanup work pending.
- Connect the charger or mains power and keep the computer powered on throughout the upgrade.
- Unplug nonessential USB devices, external drives, card readers, printers, docking stations and monitors. Leave only the keyboard, mouse and network connection you need.
- Close games, launchers, browsers, backup jobs and other background applications.
- Temporarily remove or update third-party antivirus, VPN software, system tweakers and other software identified by the error code. Reinstall compatible versions after the upgrade.
- Back up documents, game saves and other important files before any repair, recovery or installation-media operation.
Check storage, network and compatibility
Free enough space on the Windows drive
Upgrade setup needs working space in addition to the size of the downloaded update. Open Settings > System > Storage and inspect the Windows drive, normally C:. Remove files you no longer need, empty the Recycle Bin and uninstall applications that you can restore later. The 0x80070070–0x60000 family specifically points to insufficient storage. If Windows offers the option, connect additional USB storage and select it during setup; do not disconnect it while the upgrade is running.
Do not assume that a large external drive fixes every storage error. Reserved-partition space, damaged components or a blocked connection can produce other codes, especially 0x800F0922.

Stabilize the connection
Use a reliable Wi-Fi or wired connection, disconnect a VPN, and avoid captive portals such as hotel or café sign-in pages. Keep the device connected until downloading and installation have finished. A connection problem is one possible cause of 0x800F0922, but that code can also indicate reserved-partition space or component damage, so continue with the repair steps if the network is healthy.
Confirm the target upgrade is supported
Check Settings > System > About for the installed Windows edition, processor type and system type. Keep the edition, language and architecture consistent when you later create installation media. An upgrade can fail when setup is offered software or hardware that is not compatible with the current edition. If Windows 11 compatibility checks do not pass, changing the installation method does not make an unsupported PC supported.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to start with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for Windows Update troubleshooter and follow its prompts. Allow it to apply recommended repairs, restart when asked, then return to Windows Update and check again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn systems where the automated Get Help flow is not available, use Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Let the process finish, restart the PC, and try the update once more. The troubleshooter can correct service configuration and cache conditions, but it cannot make an incompatible driver or application compatible.
Use the error code to choose the next repair
| Error code | Likely cause | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC1900101 | Incompatible or faulty driver, often involving a peripheral | Disconnect nonessential hardware. Update or remove third-party drivers, restart, and retry. |
| 0xC1900208–0x4000C | Incompatible application blocking setup | Uninstall the named or recently installed application, restart, and run setup again. |
| 0xC1900107 | Cleanup from an earlier upgrade attempt is pending | Restart first. If it remains, run Disk Cleanup and remove temporary setup files, then retry. |
| 0x80073712 or 0x800F081F | Damaged or missing Windows component files | Run DISM followed by SFC. If repair cannot complete, use installation media for an in-place repair. |
| 0x80070070–0x60000 | Insufficient storage | Free space on the Windows drive or select additional USB storage when setup provides that option. |
| 0x800F0922 | Connectivity, reserved-partition space or component problem | Disconnect VPN, verify free space and update services, repair components, and retry. |
| 0x80200056 | Setup was interrupted by a restart or sign-out | Keep the PC powered on and signed in, then run the upgrade again. |
| 0x8007000d, 0x80070003 or 0x80070057 | Update-file, path, cache or parameter problem | Run the troubleshooter and reset update components before trying another installation method. |
A code is a starting point, not a guarantee of one cause. For example, 0x800F0922 can be produced by more than one condition. If the targeted fix does not change the result, continue through the general component-repair sequence.
Repair Windows system files and update components
Run DISM and System File Checker
- Save your work, open Start, type
TerminalorCommand Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. - Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to complete. It can appear stalled for several minutes; do not close the window. - After DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows, run the Windows Update troubleshooter again if it previously found an issue, and check for the upgrade.
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses for servicing; SFC checks protected system files. If either command reports that it could not complete the repair, note the message rather than repeatedly launching setup. Installation media can provide the next in-place repair path.
Refresh the Windows Update download cache
Use this procedure when update files or the cache are suspected, including 0x8007000d, 0x80070003 and 0x80070057. It requires an administrator account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Stop the Windows Update service with
net stop wuauserv. Wait for the confirmation that the service stopped. - Open File Explorer and go to
C:Windows. Rename the folderSoftwareDistributiontoSoftwareDistribution.old. Renaming preserves the old folder if you need to inspect it; Windows creates a new cache automatically. - Return to the elevated window and run
net start wuauserv. - Restart the PC and check for updates. The first scan may take longer because Windows is rebuilding its cache.
If Windows says the folder is in use, verify that the Windows Update service actually stopped, close Settings and File Explorer windows that are viewing the folder, and restart before trying again. Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows.
Choose the right upgrade method
Windows Update is not the only route. Select the method that matches the device and the outcome you need.

| Method | Compatibility | Timing and control | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Best when the feature update has already been offered to the device and its compatibility checks pass | Least manual; downloads and schedules the installation through Settings | Normal feature upgrade that keeps personal files and installed applications |
| Windows Update Assistant | For a compatible x86/64 PC; it does not run on ARM-based PCs | Manual start gives you more control over when the download begins | In-place feature update intended to preserve the existing Windows installation |
| Official installation media | Use matching edition, language and architecture; verify compatibility before setup | Most control over the source and timing; a USB flash drive can carry the installer | Run setup for an in-place upgrade, or boot from it for a clean installation that can remove data |
Back up first regardless of the method. An in-place upgrade is designed to retain personal files and applications, but a failed setup or an incorrect clean-install choice can leave you needing recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Try Windows Update Assistant
Use the Windows Update Assistant after the normal Windows Update path and component repairs fail. Microsoft describes it as a way to manually download and install the latest Windows feature update on a compatible PC. It is limited to x86/64 computers, so do not use it on an ARM-based PC.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Close applications and disconnect nonessential peripherals.
- Download the Assistant from Microsoft’s official Windows download page and run it as an administrator.
- Let it perform its compatibility check. If it names an application, driver or storage issue, fix that issue instead of forcing setup.
- Accept the upgrade and keep the PC connected to power and the network until Windows restarts and reports completion.
If the Assistant fails with the same driver, application or storage code, stop repeating it. Move to installation media or address the named blocker directly.
Use official installation media for an in-place repair
Create or obtain the media
Use Microsoft’s official media-creation process and a reliable USB flash drive with enough capacity for the installer. Select the Windows edition, language and architecture that match the license and device. A USB drive is a transport for the installation files; it does not repair an incompatible driver, corrupted system files or an unsupported PC by itself.
Keep files with an in-place upgrade
- Start Windows normally and connect the installation USB.
- Open the drive in File Explorer and run
setup.exerather than booting from USB. - When setup asks what to keep, choose the option that preserves personal files and applications. If that option is unavailable, stop and verify the edition, language and architecture before continuing.
- Review the compatibility report, close applications, and begin the upgrade only after confirming your backup.
This approach replaces Windows components while retaining the existing installation when setup offers the keep-files option. It is useful for damaged servicing files that DISM and SFC could not repair.
Understand the clean-install boundary
Booting from the USB and choosing a custom installation is a different operation. It can remove applications, settings and personal files from the selected partitions. Use it only after making a verified backup and only when you intentionally want a clean installation. Confirm the target disk and partition on every screen; a wrong selection can erase the wrong volume.
Recover if Windows will not boot afterward
If the upgrade attempt leaves Windows unable to start, interrupt startup several times or use the manufacturer’s recovery key to enter Windows Recovery Environment. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then remove the most recent quality or feature update offered by the recovery screen. Restart and test normal boot.
Manufacturer recovery images may include device-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Windows installation media does not. If a clean reinstall is unavoidable, obtain the correct drivers from the computer or component manufacturer’s support channel after Windows starts, and restore your files from the backup.
Quick Recap
After a successful upgrade
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and confirm that the feature update is listed as installed.
- Reconnect peripherals one at a time. If the failure returns after a particular device is connected, update or replace that device’s driver.
- Reinstall only compatible versions of antivirus, VPNs, system utilities and applications that were removed before setup.
- Keep the backup until you have opened important documents and launched the games and applications you rely on.
- Record the successful method and the original error code; that information makes a future repair faster.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and has a free trial by category of at least two days before a subscription; it complements antivirus software and does not replace it, and results vary because no tool repairs every upgrade failure.
