The message does not prove that the database was deleted. Cached pages, static files, or a separate front end can continue to appear while database-backed pages, logins, searches, comments, and the admin area fail.

Work from least destructive to most technical: capture the exact symptom, verify the four database settings in wp-config.php, check the host’s MySQL or MariaDB service and account limits, make a backup, then inspect or repair tables only when the database is reachable. Remove any temporary repair setting as soon as you finish.

What the WordPress database error actually means
WordPress stores posts, pages, users, settings, plugin data, orders, and much of a site’s configuration in MySQL or MariaDB. PHP must open a connection before WordPress can complete a request. “Error Establishing a Database Connection” means that connection could not be established at that moment.
The failure can be caused by incorrect credentials, a wrong host or port, a stopped database service, exhausted hosting resources, a suspended database, denied permissions, network or socket problems, or damaged tables. A correct wp-config.php therefore does not rule out a host-side outage, and a visible home page does not prove that dynamic requests are healthy.

1. Capture the exact symptom before changing anything
Write down what works and what fails, including the time and the complete error text. This prevents a cached success from hiding an outage and gives support staff a useful starting point.
Check each surface separately
- Open the public home page in a private browser window and in a second network if possible.
- Test a page that is generated dynamically, such as a search result, comment form, account page, or checkout page.
- Open
/wp-login.phpand/wp-admin/. Note whether the login form loads, accepts credentials, or fails after submission. - Check whether only one URL, one plugin feature, or every database-backed request is affected.
- Record whether the message is the standard WordPress wording or a more specific PHP/MySQL error such as “Access denied,” “Unknown database,” “Connection refused,” or a socket error.
A page delivered from a cache or made entirely of static files can remain visible during a database outage. That explains why a site may look “up” while publishing, logging in, or loading recent posts fails.

WordPress’s official troubleshooting guidance identifies an error in wp-config.php as a common cause. Open the file in the actual WordPress installation root—not a similarly named staging directory—and compare its values with the current values shown by your hosting panel or database administrator.

Do not paste a real password into a ticket, chat, screenshot, or public forum. If you edited the file recently, inspect the surrounding syntax as well as the value: accidental quotation marks, leading or trailing whitespace, an altered apostrophe, or a file-encoding change can make valid credentials unusable. Preserve the existing PHP syntax and make a copy before editing.
When DB_HOST is not simply localhost
Some hosts put the database on another server, require a custom port, or provide a Unix socket. Use the exact form documented by the provider. A TCP endpoint can look like mysql.example.com:3307; a socket configuration may be a filesystem path. Do not guess a port or substitute a hostname from another environment. If the host supplied a new endpoint after maintenance or migration, update DB_HOST to that documented value.

3. Check the database service and account from the hosting side
If all four values match the current credentials, the problem may be outside WordPress. Contact the host or inspect its control panel for the following conditions.
Service status and reachability
- Is the MySQL or MariaDB service running, restarting, or in a crash loop?
- Is the database on another server, and is its DNS name resolving correctly?
- Is the required port open from the web server, or has a firewall rule changed?
- Did the provider move the database to a different host or socket?
For a remote database, ask the provider to verify network reachability from the web server rather than testing only from your home computer. A port that is open to you may still be blocked between the application server and database server.
Quota, suspension, and permissions
- Has the account reached a database-size, disk-space, inode, connection, or other hosting quota?
- Was the database suspended for billing, policy, or resource usage?
- Does the named user still have privileges on the named database?
- Can the user authenticate but not select tables, or is authentication itself refused?
WordPress’s common-errors guidance specifically lists server outages and quota shutdowns as host causes. Ask support for the service status, account limits, permission grants, and relevant error-log entries at the time of failure.
4. Make a backup before repairing tables
Do not run repair actions on the only copy of a production database. Create and retain a current backup first, and confirm that the backup file is readable or that the host can restore it. If the site is still partly functional, schedule the backup during a quiet period and avoid simultaneous content edits.
Choose a backup method you can verify
- Use the host’s database backup or snapshot function when it produces a restorable copy.
- Use phpMyAdmin’s export function to export the affected database in a format your host supports.
- Use a command-line dump only if you know the correct server, user, character set, and destination and can protect the resulting file.
Keep the backup outside the public web root and restrict its permissions. A table repair is not a cure for a failing disk, exhausted memory, repeated database crashes, or a security incident; the backup gives you a recovery point while those causes are investigated.

5. Inspect and repair tables with phpMyAdmin when the database is reachable
If the host confirms that the service is running and you can open the database in phpMyAdmin, inspect the affected tables before making changes. WordPress’s troubleshooting FAQ describes selecting the database, selecting tables, and choosing “Repair Table” from the actions menu.
- Sign in to the host’s phpMyAdmin installation over the provider’s secure control panel.
- Select the database named by
DB_NAME; do not assume it is the first database in the list. - Review the table list and note any tables marked as crashed, in use, or otherwise abnormal.
- Confirm that your backup completed before selecting repair actions.
- Select the affected table or tables, choose Repair Table from the available actions, and wait for the result.
- Reload the WordPress page that failed and check both the front end and the admin area.
If phpMyAdmin cannot open the database, reports that the server is unavailable, or shows permission errors, stop table repair and return to the host-service and access checks. Repeatedly clicking repair will not fix an unreachable server.
6. Use WordPress’s repair page only for a reachable, repairable database
WordPress includes a temporary maintenance page that can attempt database repairs. It is appropriate only when the database service is reachable and table problems are suspected.
- Make a current backup.
- Open the installation’s
wp-config.phpand add this line on its own PHP statement:
define( 'WP_ALLOW_REPAIR', true );- Visit
/wp-admin/maint/repair.phpon the affected site. - Run the repair action shown by WordPress and record any errors it reports.
- Test the public site, login, publishing, and any database-heavy features.
- Remove the
WP_ALLOW_REPAIRline immediately after the repair page is no longer needed.
The repair page can be accessed without login credentials while the setting remains enabled. Leaving it active exposes a maintenance interface to anyone who knows the URL, so treat removal as part of the repair—not as optional cleanup.
7. Turn on controlled debugging and collect evidence
When configuration and service checks do not identify the cause, controlled debugging can distinguish a connection failure from a plugin, theme, or PHP problem. Enable WP_DEBUG only long enough to collect useful evidence, and do not display sensitive errors to visitors on a production site.

What to capture
- The exact error text and the URL that produced it.
- The UTC time of each failure and whether retries behaved differently.
- WordPress, PHP, and MySQL or MariaDB versions.
- Relevant web-server, PHP, and database logs covering that timestamp.
- Recent changes: password resets, migrations, DNS edits, plugin or theme updates, PHP upgrades, or hosting-plan changes.
Provide the host with the evidence rather than sending credentials. A support engineer can correlate the timestamp with service restarts, rejected connections, quota events, or permission changes.
Keep production errors private
On a live site, avoid settings that print stack traces, SQL details, usernames, filesystem paths, or connection information in the browser. Route diagnostics to a protected log, restrict access, and restore the site’s normal debugging configuration after collecting the evidence. Never leave diagnostic output enabled simply because the front end appears to work.
Choosing the right resolution path
The best next step depends on whether the database can be reached, what access you have, how reversible the action is, and how urgent the outage is.

Common pitfalls that prolong the outage
Assuming a visible page means the database is healthy
Cached HTML can hide a failure until a visitor requests a page that needs a fresh query. Test login, publishing, search, and another dynamic feature instead of relying on the home page alone.
Changing all credentials at once
Resetting the password, renaming the database, and changing the host simultaneously destroys the evidence trail. Verify one value at a time and keep a dated copy of the original configuration.

Repairing before backing up
Repair operations can alter table structures or discard records that the server considers corrupt. Preserve a backup and ask the host to take a snapshot when the database is unstable.
Leaving repair mode enabled
WP_ALLOW_REPAIR is a temporary switch, not a permanent performance setting. Remove it as soon as the maintenance page is no longer required.

Send names, timestamps, and error messages, but redact passwords, API keys, full connection strings, and exported database files unless the provider supplies a secure upload channel.
When to escalate beyond configuration and table repair
Escalate when the four constants are correct, the database service appears healthy, and repairs do not explain the failure. Ask the host to inspect database and web-server logs, connection limits, disk and memory pressure, account quotas, firewall rules, and permission grants.
WordPress’s official common-errors guidance also treats compromise as a possibility when ordinary configuration and host checks are clean. Look for unexpected administrator accounts, modified files, unfamiliar scheduled tasks, unexplained database users, or traffic spikes. Preserve logs and the backup before deleting files or reinstalling WordPress, and have the host or a qualified security professional investigate.
A managed host is the appropriate escalation point when you lack database access, the service itself is failing, or the provider controls the socket, port, quota, or permission system. Include the exact error, UTC timestamps, versions, recent changes, and the tests already completed so support can move directly to server-side evidence.
