Start by copying the exact error text, back up the database and WordPress files, and establish whether the failure is a basic connection problem or a network-table/configuration problem. For the common “Error establishing a database connection” message, check DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST in wp-config.php before changing any Multisite tables.

WordPress describes that message as usually being caused by an error in wp-config.php. If the main site works but Network Setup or a new subsite fails, the database connection may already be healthy; focus instead on the Multisite constants, table prefix, global network tables, DNS, and rewrite rules.

Identify which kind of failure you have
Do not run repair SQL until you know which layer failed. The same installation can show a database-looking message for different causes.

Keep the original error text and the time it occurred. A database connection error is handled differently from a network that was created successfully but routes subsites incorrectly.

Protect the existing installation first
Unless this is a disposable fresh install, follow WordPress’s own warning: back up the database and files before changing configuration or tables. A Multisite database contains the original site plus network-wide records and one set of site-specific tables per site. A partial SQL edit can therefore affect every site in the network.
Make a rollback you can actually restore
- Export the complete database, including all tables whose names begin with your actual prefix.
- Copy the entire WordPress files directory, including
wp-config.php, uploads, themes, plugins, and server rule files. - Record the database name, username, host, table prefix, current site domain, and path separately from the backup.
- Do not test an unverified backup by deleting the live database. Confirm that the export can be opened or restored in a separate environment when your hosting tools allow it.
Fix an immediate database connection error
Check the four connection constants
Open wp-config.php and verify the values supplied by your host:
DB_NAMEis the database that contains this WordPress installation.DB_USERis the database account actually granted access to that database.DB_PASSWORDmatches the current password for that account, including special characters and capitalization.DB_HOSTis the hostname and, where required by the host, the correct port or socket notation.
Look for an accidental quote, trailing space, altered capitalization, or a value copied from a different environment. A Multisite conversion does not change these four values; if the single-site installation stopped connecting after an edit, repair this layer before attempting Network Setup.
Confirm the server and account are usable
Ask the host or inspect its control panel for a running database service and the correct database hostname. Also verify that:
- The database account has permission to connect to the selected database and create, alter, and index tables. Network Setup must create several global tables, not merely read existing posts.
- The hosting account has not reached its database-size or file-count quota.
- The host has not disabled WordPress Multisite or restricted table-creation privileges for the account.
- The database server is accepting connections from the web server where WordPress runs.
If the host reports an outage, quota limit, or policy restriction, changing WordPress files will not solve the problem. Resolve that service issue first, then retest the original single site.

Verify the single-site installation before enabling a network
Network Setup is safest when the existing site is healthy. Sign in to the original site, load several front-end pages, and confirm that Pretty Permalinks work. A broken permalink configuration can look like a Multisite failure later because subsites rely on the same rewrite layer.

Reduce variables during setup
Deactivate active plugins before creating the network. A plugin can alter database access, rewrite rules, or administrative requests while the network tables are being created. Reactivate plugins after the network loads and test them individually, especially plugins that assume a single site.
Enable the required constant in the right place
Add this line above the stop-editing marker in wp-config.php:
define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true );The placement matters. If it is below the file’s stop-editing comment or inside a conditional block that never runs, the Network Setup screen will not be enabled even though the line appears in the file.
Run Network Setup without creating a second problem
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Tools → Network Setup.
- Choose Sub-domains only when your DNS and web server can route each site’s host name. Choose Sub-directories when sites should live below one domain path and the server is configured for that arrangement.
- Review the proposed network title and administrator address.
- Submit the form and save the generated instructions before leaving the page.
- Copy every generated Multisite constant into
wp-config.phpexactly as displayed. Do not substitute values from another installation. - Replace the existing WordPress rules in
.htaccesswith the generated network rules, or configure the equivalent rules for the web server you use. - Sign out and back in if WordPress requests it, then open the Network Admin area and create a test site.
The generated block normally includes settings for network mode, addressing style, the current domain and path, and the current site and blog IDs. The exact values are installation-specific, so copying the block is safer than reconstructing it from memory.

Check the Multisite database tables and prefix
A successful connection does not prove that Network Setup created the network. WordPress expects a set of global tables. With the default prefix, their names are:

Replace wp_ with the value of $table_prefix in your own wp-config.php. For example, a prefix of game_ means game_blogs and game_site, not wp_blogs and wp_site.
If the tables do not exist
- Confirm that the dashboard and the command-line tool point to the same database and WordPress directory.
- Check whether the database user was allowed to create tables.
- Review the database server’s error log for denied privileges, storage exhaustion, or a failed table operation.
- Verify that the prefix was not changed after installation. A prefix mismatch can make valid tables appear to be missing.
If the tables exist but are empty
Empty wp_site or wp_blogs records indicate an incomplete network creation or a network pointed at the wrong database. Do not paste generic SQL from a forum. Correct values depend on the network domain, path, dates, administrator, IDs, and actual prefix. Use a verified backup or a WordPress-aware repair process that can preserve those installation-specific values.
When the main site works but subsites fail
Inspect network identity and site registration
Check that wp_site contains the intended network domain and path and that wp_blogs contains the main site and each created subsite. A wrong domain, path, or site ID can send a valid request to a site that does not exist in the network.
Match DNS and server routing to the addressing mode
For subdomains, every required host name must resolve to the WordPress server, and the web server must accept those host names. For subdirectories, requests must be routed to the same WordPress installation under the selected path. Switching modes in the dashboard without changing DNS or server configuration leaves the database and the request routing out of sync.

Recheck rewrite rules
Replace stale single-site rules with the network rules generated by WordPress. If you use a web server other than Apache, configure the equivalent rewrite behavior there; an .htaccess file alone may have no effect. Redirect loops and 404 responses after a database repair usually point to this routing layer rather than to missing rows.
Resolve “one or more database tables are unavailable”
WordPress uses this message when it cannot find one or more global network tables. Check all seven expected tables using your real prefix, not only the site-specific tables. A table can also be present but unusable because the database server rejected an operation.
- Compare the table list with the expected global-table inventory.
- Read the database error log for permission failures, storage limits, or engine errors.
- For older upgrades, investigate collation incompatibilities reported by the database server.
- Restore the affected tables from a known-good backup when that is safer than recreating them.
If a restore is required, restore a consistent database state rather than mixing rows from different dates. Afterward, confirm that the network domain, path, and site records match the files and DNS configuration currently in use.
Use WP-CLI when the dashboard cannot complete
WP-CLI provides wp core multisite-install for creating a Multisite installation from scratch. It can create the network tables and add the required constants to wp-config.php. Run it from the correct WordPress directory with the same database credentials that the web request uses, and review its help for the options required by your installation.
wp core multisite-install --helpWP-CLI does not replace web-server setup. Apache rewrite rules, or equivalent rules for another server, still must be configured. For an existing site, do not run a fresh-install command against the live database as a repair shortcut; first decide whether restoring a verified backup or repairing the current network preserves more data.

Choose the least invasive recovery path

Common mistakes that make recovery worse
- Editing tables before backing up: one incorrect row can affect network routing for every site.
- Using the default
wp_prefix automatically: installations often use a custom prefix. - Copying constants from another guide: domain, path, and site IDs must match this network.
- Leaving plugins active: a plugin can interfere with setup or assume a single-site environment.
- Changing subdomain mode without DNS: the database may be correct while requests never reach WordPress.
- Assuming an
.htaccessedit applies everywhere: other web servers need their own rewrite configuration. - Running a fresh-install command on an existing database: this can create a second, conflicting network state.
A final verification checklist
- The original single site loads, and Pretty Permalinks work.
- The four database constants match the active database account and host.
- The account can create and modify tables, and the host confirms that Multisite is allowed.

When to involve your host or a database specialist
Contact the host when the database service is unavailable, the account has reached a quota, the server rejects connections, or Multisite is disabled by policy. Escalate to a database specialist when tables are partially restored, collations conflict during a legacy upgrade, or you cannot establish which backup represents a consistent network state. Provide the exact error text, the time of failure, the database and web-server logs, and the results of the checklist; never send passwords in a support ticket.
The safest repair is the smallest one that restores a known-good connection, network tables, and request routing. Once those layers agree, Multisite installation errors generally stop being mysterious: the database credentials authenticate, the network tables describe the sites, and the server sends each domain or path to the WordPress installation that owns it.

Can I enable Multisite while the single site still shows a database connection error?
No. Restore the single-site connection first. Network Setup cannot reliably create or verify global tables while WordPress cannot connect to its database.
Why do I see valid tables but WordPress says they are missing?
The usual causes are a different database, a different $table_prefix, or a database user that cannot read the tables. Compare the active configuration with the table names before changing data.
Is subdomain mode always better than subdirectory mode?
Neither is universally better. Subdomains require DNS and server routing for each host name; subdirectories use one domain path and may be simpler when that routing is available.
Will WP-CLI configure Apache automatically?
No. wp core multisite-install can create network tables and add constants, but Apache rules or equivalent rules for another web server still need to be configured.
