If visitors see a registrar parking page instead of your WordPress site, check the domain and DNS before editing WordPress. An expired or suspended domain, parking nameservers, or a host assignment pointing elsewhere can prevent the request from reaching WordPress at all. Only after the domain resolves to your server should you investigate home/siteurl, wp-config.php, rewrite rules, plugins, or a possible hack.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Use the workflow below from the least destructive layer to the most invasive. Preserve a copy of the current site before changing files, and treat a redirect that affects only certain visitors or search traffic as a security incident until disproved.

Capture the exact page title, destination URL, and behavior in a private browser window and from a second network. These details separate a domain-lifecycle problem from an application redirect.
| What you see | Most likely layer | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Registrar-branded “parked” or advertising page for every visitor | Registration or DNS | The domain may be expired, suspended, or still delegated to parking nameservers. The web server may never receive the request. |
Browser DNS error, such as DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN |
Registration or DNS | The name is not resolving. An expired domain can reach this state after its grace period. |
| Your WordPress site loads, then sends visitors to another domain | WordPress, web server, CDN, or plugin | The request reached hosting, so inspect URL settings and redirect rules. |
| Only selected URLs, devices, referrers, or search visitors are redirected | Conditional rule or malware | Check injected code, scheduled tasks, CDN rules, and modified files. |
| A temporary host URL works but the custom domain shows parking | Domain routing | The WordPress installation is probably intact; the custom domain, DNS, or hosting assignment is wrong. |
Do not delete .htaccess or reinstall WordPress while the domain is still parked. Those changes cannot repair a domain that does not resolve to your host.

Check registration and domain status
Confirm renewal and holds
Sign in to the registrar and verify that the domain is active, paid, and assigned to the correct account. Look for an expiration notice, grace period, redemption state, clientHold, or serverHold. A hold can stop DNS resolution even when the WordPress files and hosting account are unchanged.
WordPress.com support describes a typical expired-domain grace period of about ten days to two weeks, during which a parked page may appear. Later, the name can stop resolving and produce DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN. The exact period and restoration cost depend on the top-level domain and registrar.
Renew or restore through the registrar
- Renew the domain if the registrar still offers ordinary renewal.
- If it has entered redemption, follow the registrar’s restoration process rather than adding a new DNS record to an inactive name.
- Confirm that privacy, contact-verification, or abuse holds are cleared if the registrar identifies one.
- Record the new expiration date and keep the renewal receipt.
Expiration does not by itself erase the WordPress files or database. It makes the public address unavailable until the domain is reactivated. After reactivation, DNS-related services may take approximately 24–48 hours to return according to current registrar support guidance, while WordPress.com notes that some networks can take up to 72 hours to update.
Verify the authoritative nameservers and DNS records
Find the DNS provider that actually answers
The registrar’s DNS screen is not always authoritative. First determine which nameservers are delegated for the domain. Check the nameserver list in the registrar account and, if needed, query it from a terminal:
dig NS example.com +short
dig A example.com
dig AAAA example.com
dig CNAME www.example.com
On Windows, nslookup -type=NS example.com and nslookup example.com provide the same basic checks. Replace the example name with your own domain.
Compare records with your host’s required values
At the authoritative DNS provider, compare the apex A record and any AAAA record with the IP address supplied by your WordPress host. Check the www record, usually a CNAME or an additional A record, as well. Remove stale records only after confirming which values the host requires; blindly changing DNS can take the site offline or break mail.

Use the temporary host address as a boundary test
If your provider supplies a temporary URL, open it without changing WordPress settings. If the temporary URL serves the expected site while the custom domain shows parking, the fault is above WordPress: registration, nameservers, records, or hosting assignment. If both addresses redirect, continue to application and server checks.
Allow for propagation without mistaking it for failure
After renewal or a nameserver change, test from more than one network and use a DNS checker that queries several resolvers. A recently renewed domain can take hours and, in some cases, up to 72 hours to update everywhere. Do not repeatedly alternate records during that window; each change can extend the period in which different resolvers have different answers.
Confirm the request reaches the intended web server
Inspect the response headers
Use a header request to see whether the response comes from your host or a parking service:
curl -I http://example.com
curl -I https://example.com
Note the status code, Location header, server name, and certificate. A direct Location to a registrar or advertising domain, before any WordPress page appears, points to DNS or the web server’s default host. A Location emitted after your normal server responds points farther up the stack.
Check HTTPS separately
An A record can be correct while an AAAA record points to an old or parked IPv6 server. Test both HTTP and HTTPS, and test the apex and www hostnames. Remove or correct an obsolete IPv6 record only after confirming that your host does not use it.
Check WordPress URL settings after DNS is correct
Inspect home and siteurl
Back up the database, then inspect the options table (often named wp_options, though the prefix may differ). The home value is the public address visitors use; siteurl is where WordPress core files are located. Both should use the intended scheme and hostname, for example https://example.com, with no accidental parked-domain value or trailing-path mismatch.
If you cannot reach the dashboard, use your host’s database tool or a carefully prepared SQL query to read the values before changing them. Make one change at a time and clear any page, object, or CDN cache afterward.

Review wp-config.php
Search the file for forced URL constants such as:
define( 'WP_HOME', 'https://example.com' );
define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com' );
These constants override database values. Remove stale definitions or update them to the live hostname only when you know the file is genuine and the domain is already resolving correctly.
Look specifically for RELOCATE. WordPress migration guidance warns that leaving RELOCATE enabled is insecure because an attacker may be able to change the site URL. It should not remain enabled on a production site.
Account for a reverse proxy or CDN
A reverse proxy can replace the incoming HTTP_HOST and cause WordPress to generate links for the proxy’s hostname. Confirm that the proxy forwards the intended host and scheme. If your deployment requires an override in wp-config.php, use the exact host-handling pattern documented for that proxy and restrict it to trusted proxy traffic; do not accept arbitrary host headers from the public internet.
Inspect rewrite and redirect rules
Preserve the current .htaccess
Download the existing file and store it outside the web root before editing. Attackers frequently modify .htaccess, but deleting it alone does not remove backdoors elsewhere.
A normal Apache WordPress section contains the standard markers and rules that enable rewriting, exclude an existing file or directory, and send other requests to /index.php:
# BEGIN WordPress
RewriteEngine On
# standard file and directory exclusions
# final rewrite to /index.php
# END WordPress
Compare the actual block with the official WordPress Apache baseline. Investigate redirects outside the # BEGIN WordPress and # END WordPress markers, encoded or obfuscated PHP, unfamiliar conditions, and references to the parked domain. Check parent directories and subdirectories for additional .htaccess files.
Check every redirect layer
- Apache virtual-host configuration and Nginx server blocks.
- Hosting-panel redirect tools and domain aliases.
- CDN page rules, workers, edge functions, and cache redirects.
- Security, redirect, migration, and SEO plugins.
- Must-use plugins and scheduled tasks that do not appear in the normal Plugins screen.
Disable one suspected component at a time and record the result. If you temporarily rename wp-content/plugins to stop plugins from loading, do so only after creating a rollback copy and ensuring you can restore the directory. Re-enable plugins individually to identify the rule.

Recognize signs of a hacked site
After domain, DNS, host assignment, URL settings, and redirect rules are correct, unexplained behavior may indicate compromise. Warning signs include an unknown destination, redirects that appear only for search visitors or mobile devices, injected administrator accounts, unfamiliar PHP files, modified timestamps, or spam pages in the database.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Preserve evidence before cleanup
- Record the destination URL, affected paths, timestamps, HTTP status, and response headers.
- Take a complete backup or forensic copy of files and the database before deleting or replacing anything. Keep it separate from the cleaned site.
- Save access logs, CDN logs, and hosting-panel activity if available.
Scan files and data
Scan the entire installation, not just the home page. Include wp-content, uploads, themes, plugins, must-use plugins, the options table, posts, users, and scheduled tasks. Pay special attention to .htaccess, index.php, theme header.php, footer.php, and functions.php; these are high-impact locations commonly altered in WordPress compromises.
Replace code from trusted sources
Do not try to make suspicious PHP “look safe” by deleting one line. Replace WordPress core, plugins, and themes with clean downloads from their official distribution sources, matching versions where possible, and compare files with the official repository. Keep user uploads and verified configuration, but inspect uploads for executable files and review database content for injected scripts or links.
Rotate credentials and close the entry point
- Change hosting-panel, SFTP/FTP, database, WordPress administrator, registrar, CDN, and email passwords.
- Invalidate active WordPress sessions, application passwords, API keys, and deployment tokens.
- Remove unknown users and downgrade accounts that do not need administrative access.
- Update WordPress, PHP, plugins, and themes after confirming compatibility.
- Disable dashboard file editing, protect
wp-config.php, use least-privilege accounts, and add a web application firewall.
If spam URLs were indexed, request search-engine cleanup only after the site is clean and the redirect is gone.
Choose the least destructive fix that explains the symptom
| Candidate fix | Use it when | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|
| Renew or restore the domain | The registrar shows expiration, redemption, or a hold and the response is a parking page. | Usually reversible and preserves site files; fees and timelines vary by TLD. |
| Correct nameservers or DNS | Records point to parking, an old host, or an unassigned address. | Reversible, but propagation and mail records must be considered. |
| Attach the hostname to the correct hosting account | DNS reaches the provider but the provider serves a default or parking site. | Reversible; verify the document root before changing it. |
| Fix WordPress URL or proxy handling | The server responds with WordPress and generates a wrong hostname. | Moderate risk; back up the database and configuration first. |
| Repair rewrite, CDN, or plugin rules | The redirect occurs after the request reaches hosting and matches a rule. | Reversible if you preserve the original files and settings. |
| Perform incident recovery | Redirects are selective or you find unknown code, users, or tasks. | Most invasive; preserve evidence, replace code, and rotate every credential. |
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
- Editing the wrong DNS dashboard: changes at a non-authoritative provider have no effect. Confirm delegation first.
- Changing every record at once: this destroys your baseline and can interrupt mail, verification records, or other services. Change one layer, document it, and retest.
- Forgetting IPv6: visitors using an
AAAArecord can continue reaching an old server even while IPv4 appears fixed. - Trusting one browser or network: cached DNS and CDN responses can hide the true scope. Compare multiple resolvers and private sessions.
- Clearing evidence: deleting files or reinstalling before taking a copy can remove logs and indicators needed to find the entry point.
- Assuming a clean home page means a clean site: conditional malware may target search referrals, mobile users, or only specific paths.
- Leaving temporary migration settings enabled: remove
RELOCATEand stale forced URL constants after the move is complete.
Verify the fix from outside your usual connection
Once the change is made, test the apex and www hostnames over both HTTP and HTTPS. Confirm that HTTP redirects only to the intended HTTPS hostname, that the certificate matches, and that deep links, login, media, and administrative pages do not jump to the parked address. Check response headers for unexpected Location values and inspect the page source for absolute links to the old domain.
Repeat tests from a second network and several devices after the expected propagation period. Monitor access and error logs for repeated redirect attempts, new administrator accounts, or requests for unfamiliar PHP files. Keep the pre-change backup and a dated record of DNS, hosting, and WordPress settings so you can reverse a change without guessing.
When to involve your host or registrar
Contact the registrar when the domain is expired, held, in redemption, or delegated to nameservers you cannot change. Contact the host when authoritative DNS is correct but the hostname maps to the wrong account, the temporary URL fails, or you need virtual-host and server-log access. Provide the exact hostname, timestamps, response headers, destination URL, current nameservers, and the records you verified. This lets support distinguish a domain-status problem from a server redirect without asking you to repeat destructive changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my WordPress domain show a registrar parking page?
The domain is commonly expired, suspended, or still delegated to parking nameservers, so the request never reaches WordPress. Check registration status, holds, authoritative nameservers, and DNS before changing site files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill renewing the domain delete my WordPress website?
No. Expiration normally makes the public address unavailable; it does not by itself delete the files or database. Reactivation may take about 24–48 hours for DNS-related services, and some networks may take up to 72 hours to update.
What if the temporary hosting URL works but my domain does not?
That boundary test points to registration, nameservers, DNS records, or the host’s domain assignment rather than WordPress. Confirm the hostname is attached to the correct document root or site in the hosting panel.
Could a parked-domain redirect mean my site was hacked?
A registrar-branded page for every visitor usually indicates domain or DNS status. A redirect after WordPress loads, an unknown destination, or behavior limited to search visitors, devices, or referrers is more suspicious and warrants a full compromise investigation.
Should I delete .htaccess to stop the redirect?
Preserve it first and compare it with the official WordPress Apache baseline. Deleting it may remove one symptom while leaving backdoors in plugins, themes, uploads, the database, or scheduled tasks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I check whether WordPress itself has the wrong domain?
Inspect the database options table’s home and siteurl values, then review WP_HOME, WP_SITEURL, and RELOCATE in wp-config.php. Back up first and change one value at a time.
Why do only some visitors get redirected?
Conditional rules in malware, plugins, server configuration, or CDN workers can filter by device, referrer, URL, or search traffic. Preserve logs and a clean copy, then scan files, database content, users, and scheduled tasks.
When should I ask my host or registrar for help?
Ask the registrar about expiration, redemption, holds, or delegated nameservers. Ask the host when DNS is correct but the hostname reaches the wrong account, the temporary URL fails, or you need virtual-host and server-log access. Include timestamps, headers, nameservers, records, and the destination URL.
The Bottom Line
A parked page is usually a domain-status, DNS, or hosting-routing problem—not a WordPress-file problem. Verify renewal, authoritative nameservers, records, and host assignment first; then check WordPress URLs, proxy handling, rewrite rules, and plugins. Preserve evidence before cleanup, and treat selective or unexplained redirects as a possible compromise requiring scanning, clean replacements, credential rotation, and hardening.
