If your YouTube Live loop shows video but has no sound, trace the audio from the MP4 through OBS to YouTube: play the file, check the active Media Source and its Audio Mixer meter, then inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room error and test the stream. The first place the signal disappears points to the fix.
Find where the audio disappears
Use the same clip segment for each check, and make sure it contains sound you can hear when played directly. Follow this path in order: MP4 file → OBS Media Source → OBS mixer and encoder output → YouTube playback.
- The file has no sound: choose a file with an audio track or add a separate audio source.
- The file plays with sound, but the OBS meter is inactive: check the selected source, playback state, and how OBS is reading the media.
- The OBS meter moves, but YouTube has no sound: check the encoder’s audio output and the Live Control Room message.
- YouTube playback has sound, but your headphones do not: investigate local monitoring separately; that alone does not show that the audience stream is silent.
1. Confirm the MP4 itself has audio
Play the exact MP4 outside OBS and listen to the section that is currently playing in the loop. Confirm that the expected audio is present and that the file contains an audio track. OBS supports MP4 as a Media Source format, but support for the container does not mean every MP4 contains sound. If the file is silent, use a version with audio or add a separate audio source in OBS. 2. Check the active OBS Media Source
In the scene being sent to YouTube, select the Media Source and confirm it points to the intended local MP4 and is playing. OBS’s Media Source has a Loop property that restarts playback when the file ends. Loop controls repeat playback; it does not add an audio track or guarantee that audio reaches the stream. If you have multiple scenes or similarly named sources, verify the one in the live scene rather than a source in another scene. Watch the clip during a section known to have audio: a silent opening, gap, or end card can make a working source appear inactive.
3. Read the OBS Audio Mixer while the clip plays
Look for the Media Source’s level meter in the Audio Mixer while a known audible part of the MP4 plays. OBS describes the mixer as a way to view source levels and control mute, volume, and monitoring. Check that the source is not muted and that its fader is not turned down. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

- No meter movement: recheck that the correct file and source are active and playing. If the clip is audible outside OBS, focus on the Media Source and how OBS is decoding that file.
- The meter moves: OBS is receiving a signal from the source. If YouTube still has no sound, move on to the encoder and YouTube checks rather than treating the local meter as proof that viewers can hear it.
4. Distinguish local monitoring from stream audio
OBS monitoring routes a source to a configured local listening device. Not hearing the clip through headphones or speakers does not by itself mean the stream output is silent. Check the mixer meter, then verify what YouTube receives with a short test stream. If you need to listen locally, check the configured monitoring device and the source’s monitoring control. Avoid routing monitored audio back through desktop capture in a way that captures the same sound twice. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
5. Check YouTube Live Control Room and encoder audio
Look at the Live Control Room’s stream health and error messages. For a missing audio signal, YouTube’s error wording is “Your encoder is sending no audio.” If your encoder has an audio-enable control, YouTube’s guidance is to enable audio. YouTube Live streaming error messages

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio codecs and identifies unsupported codecs, incorrect sample-rate or bitrate settings, and missing or multiple audio streams as potential ingestion problems. Check the settings for the live encoder and the specific error shown for your ingestion path. Do not assume the codec inside the MP4 is the same as the codec OBS sends to YouTube; the encoded live stream has its own audio settings. If the mixer meter is moving but YouTube reports no audio, focus on the encoder’s audio output and the Live Control Room’s specific message. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder and the route feeding it when troubleshooting a live stream. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream

6. Run a short test before relying on the loop
Start a brief test stream that includes an audible part of the MP4. Check the Live Control Room preview and listen to the actual YouTube playback from the viewer side. YouTube recommends testing with audio and monitoring sound and picture during a live stream. Do not treat a moving OBS meter or successful video preview alone as confirmation that viewers can hear the stream. YouTube encoder settings and test guidance · YouTube live streaming tips
If the MP4 loop still has no sound
- The MP4 is silent in a media player: replace it with a file containing the needed audio, or add a separate audio source.
- The MP4 is audible outside OBS, but its mixer meter stays still: confirm that the active scene contains the correct, playing Media Source. Then investigate OBS’s handling of that media.
- The mixer meter moves, but YouTube says “Your encoder is sending no audio”: check whether audio is enabled in the encoder and review the Live Control Room’s audio-related error.
- YouTube reports a codec or audio-settings problem: inspect the live encoder’s audio codec, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance for the configured stream.
- The audience hears audio, but you do not: troubleshoot OBS’s monitoring device and routing without assuming that monitoring settings control the audience output.
- Audio works in a short test but fails later: keep checking the Live Control Room and stream playback during the longer run; a test confirms only the path and content observed in that test.
