Choose what you want to schedule
“Switch playlist scenes” can mean three different things. Pick the one that matches your goal before configuring OBS:
- Advance from clip to clip in one scene: Add the media files to a VLC Video Source playlist. It plays items within that source; it does not change OBS scenes.
- Change between separate scenes at clock times: Use Advanced Scene Switcher macros with date/time conditions and scene-switch actions.
- Change scenes after clips have played for known durations: Use scene-switch automation, but calculate the intended timing and test transitions. The plugin listing establishes time/date conditions and scene-switch actions; it does not guarantee exact timing in every setup.
Neither playlist playback nor a scene switch is the same as starting or ending the YouTube broadcast.
Play a playlist inside one OBS scene
OBS documents VLC Video Source as a way to create a playlist of items, “similar to an Image Slideshow.” This option requires VLC to be installed. Match its architecture to OBS: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

- Add the source: In the target scene, add a VLC Video Source.
- Build the playlist: Add the local media files or paths you want played. Confirm the files are available to the computer running OBS.
- Choose progression: Set Loop Playlist on if the playlist should repeat, or leave it off if it should play through once. OBS documentation lists loop as on by default. Set Shuffle Playlist on only if you want randomized order; OBS documentation lists shuffle as off by default.
- Set hidden-source behavior: Choose what happens when the source or its scene is hidden. The source can stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play. Use always play when playback should continue while the scene is off air; choose a stopping or pausing behavior when it should not.
- Test the whole cycle: Preview the scene, check video and audio, verify the last item’s behavior and playlist wraparound, then hide and show the scene to confirm the chosen visibility behavior.
Schedule transitions between OBS scenes
For changes between separate scenes, use the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin’s macro system. Its OBS Project Forums listing identifies version 1.36.1, last updated August 7, 2026, and OBS Studio 31.1.1 as the minimum OBS version. Check the listing for compatibility with your installed OBS version before installing: Advanced Scene Switcher on the OBS Project Forums.
- Install a compatible version: Confirm the plugin’s minimum OBS requirement and use a release compatible with your OBS installation.
- Open the macro controls: In OBS, open the Advanced Scene Switcher interface and create a macro for each scheduled transition.
- Set the condition: Add the relevant date/time condition for when the transition should occur. Use the date as well as the clock time when a change should happen only on a particular day.
- Set the action: Add an action that switches to the intended OBS scene. Create separate macros for subsequent scheduled scenes.
- Test before going unattended: Check that each condition selects the expected scene and that transitions do not interrupt the intended audio or visuals. For a fixed sequence based on media durations, account for the actual lengths and test the handoffs; do not assume the plugin will switch at an exact elapsed time without validating your setup.
Clock-based conditions suit a schedule such as “show the game scene at 8 p.m.” Duration-based changes are a different requirement: the desired switch depends on when playback began and how long media takes, so timing needs deliberate testing.

Keep the YouTube broadcast controls separate
A scene change only changes what OBS sends. It does not by itself start the YouTube broadcast, and finishing a playlist should not be treated as a command to end the broadcast.
The OBS guide to YouTube streaming explains that when YouTube auto-start is disabled, starting to send the stream from OBS does not by itself make a scheduled broadcast live; the operator must also use YouTube’s Go Live control. The interface may change, so check the current YouTube Studio controls for the scheduled broadcast and verify in YouTube Studio that it is live for viewers: OBS guide to streaming to YouTube.

Decide separately whether YouTube auto-start is enabled and whether the scheduled broadcast should be ended manually. Do not rely on a VLC playlist completing or an OBS scene changing to stop a nonstop stream. An OBS community answer says automatic stream termination when a playlist finishes is not built in; a timed scene change can alter scene flow, but it is not a stream-ending action: OBS community discussion of playlist completion.
Check the setup before leaving it unattended
- Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s 64-bit architecture if using 64-bit OBS.
- Preview every playlist item and check audio, loop or shuffle behavior, and what happens at the end of the list.
- Hide and show the scene to verify whether the VLC source stops, pauses, or keeps playing as intended.
- Test every scheduled scene transition and verify the broadcast’s actual live status in YouTube Studio.
- Decide how you will respond if a source or connection is interrupted; the cited software capability descriptions do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
- Keep the stream-ending decision distinct from playlist completion and scene switching.
