A JSON schedule can tell your own scheduler which prerecorded video to play next, but YouTube does not read that file or rotate videos for you. To run several 24/7 channels, keep a separate YouTube live stream resource and encoder pipeline for each channel, then let your scheduler hand each pipeline the next source.
How the pieces fit together
Think of the setup as three separate layers:
- Schedule and scheduler: Your JSON file describes the channel’s queue and timing rules. Your code reads it, checks that each source is available, and selects what should play next.
- Encoder: An encoder program sends the audio-video feed. Google Cloud’s live-streaming overview uses FFmpeg as an example of an encoder program.
- YouTube Live resources: A
liveBroadcastrepresents the live event; aliveStreamrepresents the audio-video content and transmission settings. The broadcast is bound to a stream.
The YouTube Live Streaming API documents creating and managing those resources, binding them, and handling broadcast lifecycle states. It does not prescribe a JSON schedule format or document a built-in engine for rotating prerecorded files.
Plan a separate pipeline for each channel
For multiple channels, keep credentials, stream resource, queue, and encoder state separate. Google for Developers states: “Note that, if you have multiple channels, you must create a different stream for each channel.” A stream resource can be reused for recurring broadcasts on its channel, with multiple broadcast resources bound to it. Alternatively, create a distinct stream for each broadcast if those events need separate transmission settings. Only one event per channel is live at a time.

Design a schedule your code can safely interpret
YouTube does not define the schema, so choose a format that is explicit enough for your scheduler to validate before playback. Include, at minimum:

- A channel identifier that maps to that channel’s credentials and stream resource.
- An ordered list of video sources for that channel.
- Timing or recurrence rules, including what happens when a queue reaches its end.
- A policy for missing, unreadable, or unavailable files, such as skip-and-log or stop-and-alert.
Keep each channel’s queue isolated. Validate the JSON syntax, channel mapping, source paths, and schedule rules before starting an encoder. A malformed schedule or inaccessible file is an application-level problem; the YouTube API does not resolve it.
Set up the YouTube resources and start playback
- Confirm channel access and permissions. Check the account’s live-streaming eligibility, API access, quotas, and channel-specific permissions in the relevant Google and YouTube account materials. These can vary; do not assume every channel is ready to broadcast.
- Create or select a
liveStreamfor each channel. Use the stream’s transmission settings to configure that channel’s encoder. Keep stream credentials and settings associated with the correct channel. - Create a scheduled
liveBroadcast. Supply its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. The scheduled start must be in the future and sufficiently near the current time to be reliably scheduled. If no scheduled end time is supplied, the broadcast is scheduled to continue indefinitely. - Bind the broadcast to its channel’s stream. Do not bind a broadcast to a stream belonging to another channel.
- Start the encoder and feed it the selected source. Your scheduler reads the channel’s JSON entries and hands the chosen file or source to the encoder. The API documentation does not define how a playlist is handed off, whether transitions are seamless, or what encoder command to use; verify those behaviors in the scheduler and encoder you choose.
- Monitor both sides. Track encoder process health as well as broadcast state. The API supports broadcast state transitions, but a custom scheduler’s restart and failure-recovery policy is yours to implement.
Keep a 24/7 rotation dependable
- Log the current channel, schedule entry, selected source, and playback or encoder errors so a failed rotation can be diagnosed.
- Decide in advance how to handle a missing file, an empty playlist, or a scheduler restart. Test that policy rather than assuming playback will continue.
- Monitor the encoder and YouTube broadcast state independently: a running process does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Do not promise uninterrupted playback or seamless transitions unless your selected scheduler, media, encoder, and operating environment have been tested for them.
- Use content you have the rights to stream and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright rules. A rotation schedule does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, gameplay, or other material.
