aboutwep.dll is a legacy 16-bit Windows Entertainment Pack library, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. The safe fix is to identify the program asking for it, then repair or reinstall that complete program from original media or a trusted backup. If the old program is gone, remove the stale startup or screensaver reference that still calls it. Do not download a solitary DLL and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
The same message can mean a missing dependency, an obsolete startup entry, or an unexpected file left by a download. The steps below separate those cases before you change anything.

What aboutwep.dll is—and is not
ABOUTWEP.DLL is associated with Microsoft Windows Entertainment Pack 1.0, a package made for the 16-bit Windows 3.x era. The package also contained files such as IDLEWILD.EXE, IWLIB.DLL, PEGGED.EXE and .IW data files. That history matters because a modern Windows installation normally does not need aboutwep.dll.

When Windows reports that it cannot find the library, the operating system is usually starting an executable that declares aboutwep.dll as a dependency. Microsoft describes this relationship plainly: when a program or DLL uses a function in another DLL, a dependency is created. Removing, overwriting, upgrading incompatibly or otherwise damaging one dependency can stop the whole program from loading.
First, capture the exact context
Do not replace files until you know what is making the request. Write down the exact error text and answer these questions:
- Does the message appear during Windows sign-in, when a game or screensaver launches, when an application closes, or only after a recent installation?
- Does the dialog name an executable, game or screensaver?
- Which Windows edition and architecture are installed? Note whether it is 64-bit Windows.
- Does a file named aboutwep.dll or ABOUTWEP.DLL exist anywhere on the drive, and what is its full path?
- Did the message begin after downloading software, using a bundled installer, installing a crack or restoring an old backup?
Take a screenshot of the dialog and record the program path. A startup error with no remaining program calls for cleanup; a launch error from an installed legacy game calls for a complete-program repair; an unexplained DLL in a download location calls for provenance and malware checks before it is opened.

Choose the repair path
| What you find | Best manual action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An old game, screensaver or Entertainment Pack program is still needed | Repair it if the installer offers repair; otherwise uninstall, restart, and reinstall the complete package from original media or a trusted backup. | The DLL belongs with companion executables, data files and other dependencies. Replacing one file can leave the package inconsistent. |
| The old program was removed, but the message appears at startup or when a screensaver runs | Identify and disable or remove the stale startup, screensaver or WIN.INI reference. | Windows may still be trying to launch a path that no longer exists. |
| The program is 16-bit and Windows is 64-bit | Use a supported compatibility solution or a separate legacy environment if the software is essential. | 64-bit Windows cannot directly run the original 16-bit program. |
| The DLL appeared in a download, crack, temporary folder or unexplained location | Do not run or copy it. Check its provenance, inspect available signature information and scan it with Microsoft Defender or another trusted antivirus. | A file with the right name is not proof that it is the historical library. |
| The original application remains installed but the dependency is unclear | Analyze the requesting executable and its imports with a dependency-analysis utility such as Dependency Walker. | The missing item may be another DLL, a wrong-architecture module or an invalid import rather than aboutwep.dll itself. |
Fix 1: repair or reinstall the complete requesting program
Use an available repair option
- Open Settings and go to Apps (on some Windows editions, Apps & features).
- Find the game, screensaver package or other program named in the error.
- If the program offers Modify or Repair, use that option and restart Windows when it finishes.
- Launch the program again from its normal shortcut, not from a DLL file.
Repair is preferable when it preserves saved games or configuration. If there is no repair option, continue with a clean reinstall.
Reinstall from trustworthy media
- Back up saved games and any configuration files that you actually need.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows. This clears processes and startup attempts that may still hold the old path.
- Install from the original disc, publisher-supplied installer or a backup whose origin you can verify.
- Keep the installer’s companion files together. Do not extract aboutwep.dll from a different package or copy it into a Windows directory.
If the installer itself refuses to run on current Windows because it is 16-bit, skip repeated DLL substitutions and use the compatibility approach described below.
Fix 2: remove a stale startup or screensaver reference
Check Startup apps
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and review entries that refer to the removed game, screensaver or an unknown executable.
- Turn off an entry only when its name and file path clearly match the obsolete program.
- Restart Windows and confirm whether the dialog has stopped.
You can also review Task Manager > Startup apps. Use Open file location where available to identify what an entry launches before disabling it. Leave unfamiliar entries enabled until you have checked their path and purpose.
Check the screensaver selection
- Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver (the exact wording can vary by Windows edition).
- Choose a current screensaver or None, then apply the change.
- If the old screensaver is still listed, remove the underlying program through Windows Apps rather than deleting a random DLL.
Check legacy WIN.INI entries
Very old Windows software could place a launch line in WIN.INI. If the error occurs during startup and the old application is gone, inspect that file for a line pointing to the obsolete executable or screensaver. Save a backup copy before editing. Remove only the confirmed stale reference, then restart. If you cannot identify a line confidently, leave the file unchanged and use the program’s uninstaller or a qualified administrator instead.

The original Entertainment Pack programs were 16-bit. A 64-bit Windows installation cannot directly execute that original 16-bit code, so restoring aboutwep.dll alone will not make the application compatible. You have three practical choices:
- Keep the software only if it is truly needed: use a supported compatibility solution that can run the old executable, following the solution’s own documentation.
- Use a separate legacy environment: run the historical software in an appropriately isolated older Windows environment or another supported setup, and keep important files backed up.
- Remove the obsolete software: uninstall it and clear its startup or screensaver reference if the program has no current role.
Do not confuse compatibility failure with a missing-file repair. If the executable is 16-bit, a successful DLL copy would still leave the architecture problem unresolved.
Fix 4: diagnose the dependency without downloading a DLL
If the original application is installed and you trust its source, inspect the executable’s dependencies instead of searching the web for a replacement file. Microsoft’s DLL troubleshooting guidance describes using Dependency Walker-style analysis to find missing DLLs, invalid modules, mismatched imports or exports, circular dependencies and wrong-architecture modules.
- Identify the exact executable named by the error and note its installation folder.
- Open that executable in a dependency-analysis utility installed from a source you trust.
- Look for a missing module, an architecture mismatch or an import that the program cannot resolve.
- Compare the result with the files delivered by the original installer. If several companion files are missing, reinstall the package rather than adding individual DLLs.
- Close the utility without copying any suggested file from an online DLL repository.
Dependency tools can report old or optional modules in ways that look alarming. Treat the report as a diagnostic clue, not as permission to download every item marked missing.

Fix 5: verify and scan an unexpected copy
If aboutwep.dll appeared after a download, bundled installer, crack or unexplained software change, treat it as an unverified file. The name alone does not establish that it is the historical Entertainment Pack library.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and record its full location, size and any available digital-signature information.
- Ask whether that location makes sense for the program that supposedly needs it. A random Downloads, temporary or system directory is not evidence of legitimacy.
- Scan the file and the surrounding installer with Microsoft Defender or another trusted antivirus before opening or moving it.
- If the scan flags the file, follow the security product’s quarantine or removal process and uninstall the software that delivered it.
- If the file is from a trusted source but Windows has marked it as downloaded, open its properties and unblock it only after you have verified that source. Microsoft Support’s guidance is explicit: only unblock files from trusted sources.
Keep the original file quarantined or backed up until you understand which program created it. Do not test an unknown DLL by placing it beside a game executable.
Why copying a DLL to System32 can make things worse
Windows searches several locations for a DLL when an application loads. Microsoft documents DLL search-order weaknesses in which a malicious library placed in a searched directory is loaded with the application’s privileges if it is found before a legitimate copy. A file that merely has the expected name can therefore become a security risk.
- Do not copy aboutwep.dll into
C:WindowsSystem32,C:WindowsSysWOW64or the Windows directory to silence a dialog. - Do not overwrite a DLL already supplied by another application.
- Do not download from “DLL fix” or generic DLL-bundle sites.
- Do not rename an unrelated DLL to aboutwep.dll.
- Do not replace only one file when the requesting package has several missing or mismatched components.
The correct location, if the historical program is valid, is the location and file set delivered by that program’s trusted installer. Even then, the program may remain unusable on 64-bit Windows because of its 16-bit executable.
Targeted troubleshooting by symptom
The message appears immediately after sign-in
Look first for a stale Startup-app entry, scheduled launch or WIN.INI line. Confirm the file path before disabling anything. If the old program is still needed, reinstall it instead of merely hiding the startup message.
The message appears only when a screensaver starts
Change the selected screensaver to None or a current option, then remove the obsolete screensaver package through Windows Apps. A missing screensaver dependency is not repaired by placing a DLL in System32.
The message appears when launching a particular game
Use the game’s repair option or reinstall its complete package from trusted media. Check whether the game is 16-bit; on 64-bit Windows, solve the architecture issue with a supported legacy environment rather than a standalone file.
The message started after an installer or crack
Do not run the copied DLL. Verify the installer’s origin, scan it and the DLL, and remove software you cannot establish as trustworthy. A sudden appearance after an untrusted download is a provenance problem first, not a routine Windows-file repair.
The error remains after uninstalling the old software
Restart, then inspect Startup apps, Task Manager’s Startup apps list, the screensaver selection and any confirmed WIN.INI reference. Remove only entries that point to the uninstalled program. If the dialog names a different executable, investigate that executable rather than assuming aboutwep.dll is the cause.
When to stop troubleshooting manually
Stop and seek qualified help if the requesting executable is unknown, the file is in a protected Windows directory without a clear reason, security scans detect other changes, or several unrelated programs begin reporting missing DLLs. Those patterns can indicate a broader software or integrity problem. Preserve the exact error, paths and scan results so the technician can distinguish a stale reference from a damaged or untrusted installation.
For a single known legacy game with trusted media, the usual endpoint is straightforward: either reinstall the whole package in an environment that can run it, or remove the old program and its references. A lone aboutwep.dll download is not a safe shortcut.
