What admin-ajax.php does
WordPress sends AJAX requests through one endpoint: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. A plugin or theme does not receive the request at its own PHP page. Instead, WordPress reads an action parameter and runs the matching PHP hook.

For a logged-in request, the server-side callback is normally registered with add_action( 'wp_ajax_{action}', 'callback_name' );. Visitors who are not logged in require a separate wp_ajax_nopriv_{action} hook. If both audiences must use the feature, register both hooks.
Admin screens receive a JavaScript variable called ajaxurl. Public-facing pages do not receive that variable automatically. Pass the endpoint to your script with admin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' ), commonly through wp_localize_script() or an equivalent script-data method.

A secure callback checks its nonce before doing work with check_ajax_referer() and terminates the AJAX response with wp_die(). A missing action, a spelling or case mismatch, an unavailable logged-out hook, or an invalid nonce can all make a request appear broken even when the endpoint itself is present.
Identify the failure before changing anything
- Open Developer Tools. In Chrome, Edge or Firefox, press
F12(or open the browser menu and choose Developer Tools), then select Network. - Reproduce the action. Submit the form, load the widget or click the button that fails.
- Filter for admin-ajax.php. Select the request and record its full URL, method, request payload, response body and HTTP status.
- Check the Console as well. A JavaScript error can prevent the request from being sent at all; in that case there will be no network entry to diagnose.
- Change one variable. Disable one plugin, bypass one security layer or alter one setting, then repeat the same request. Changing several things at once hides the cause and makes rollback difficult.

Fix “admin-ajax.php 400 Bad Request”
1. Test cookies and sessions
Open the same page in a private or incognito window. If the request succeeds there, clear the site’s cookies and cached browser data in the normal profile, sign in again and retest. Corrupted session cookies can make an otherwise valid request fail.
2. Stop hard-coding the endpoint
Do not assume that the site lives at the domain root or that /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php is always the correct absolute URL. A subdirectory installation, mapped domain, multilingual setup or reverse proxy can change the path.
On an administration screen, use the WordPress-provided ajaxurl variable:

3. Supply an exact, case-sensitive action
Every AJAX request needs an action value. It is an arbitrary string, but it must match the hook suffix character for character. save_profile, save-Profile and Save_Profile are different values.

}Compare the browser payload with the PHP hook. Verify that the field is named action, not actions, Action or a plugin-specific alias that the callback does not read.
4. Check cache and request-size limits
AJAX responses are user- and action-specific, so a full-page cache should not serve a stored response for the endpoint. Temporarily clear all page and object caches, then exclude /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php from the caching plugin’s cached URLs. One reported case was resolved by excluding this endpoint from WP Rocket’s cache; treat that as a troubleshooting lead rather than a universal requirement.
Large forms can also be rejected before WordPress reaches the callback. Ask the host to confirm max_input_vars, post_max_size and PHP memory_limit. WooCommerce guidance commonly recommends more generous values for stable operation, but the appropriate limits depend on the host, PHP version and workload. Raise them only after checking the current values and the provider’s limits.

Fix “admin-ajax.php 403 Forbidden”
A 403 generally means a security layer rejected the request. WordPress may never execute the callback. The blocking component can be a CDN firewall, a web-application firewall (WAF), a security plugin, hosting ModSecurity rules or automated bot protection.
Find which layer blocked it
- Check the response headers and body for a provider name or rule identifier.
- Review the event log in your CDN or WAF at the exact timestamp of the failed request.
- Check security-plugin logs, including Wordfence or Sucuri if either is installed.
- Ask the host to search ModSecurity audit logs for the request path and rule ID.
- If a CDN has bot protection enabled, inspect its challenge or mitigation log.
For diagnosis, create the narrowest possible exception for your own site’s legitimate request to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php. A reported Cloudflare case involved the OWASP Core Ruleset and was resolved by changing a custom filter expression that was matching the site’s own hostname. Rule names and dashboards change, so confirm the current expression and scope in your provider’s interface.
Whitelist without disabling protection globally
Do not turn off every firewall rule permanently. Prefer an exception limited to the endpoint, the required HTTP method, your hostname and the specific action or request pattern. Keep nonce validation, capability checks and input validation in the callback. If the host controls ModSecurity, request a targeted rule adjustment rather than a site-wide shutdown. After the exception, retest both logged-in and logged-out behavior if the feature supports both.
Fix “admin-ajax.php 500 Internal Server Error”
A 500 response indicates a server-side failure. The useful clue is usually in the PHP or web-server error log, where the failing function, file and line are often recorded.

Check the hosting control panel’s PHP error log and web-server error log at the time of the request. If WordPress debugging is enabled, review its debug log as well, while ensuring that sensitive data is not exposed publicly. A fatal error in a callback, an unavailable class, a type error or a database exception can all produce the same 500 status in the browser.

Isolate plugins and the theme
- Record the failing request and its action first.
- Deactivate the plugin most closely associated with that action, then retest.
- If the error disappears, reactivate plugins one at a time until the failure returns.
- If it persists, temporarily switch to a default WordPress theme and repeat the test.
- Restore the original theme and plugins after each controlled test, leaving only the confirmed cause changed.
Use a staging site where possible. On a production site, schedule changes, keep an administrator session open and avoid disabling security controls longer than necessary.
Check memory and hosting resources
WordPress installations commonly run with a memory limit of 64 MB or 128 MB, although the effective value depends on the host, PHP configuration and WordPress context. If the log shows an exhausted memory error, ask the host what PHP memory limit and process limits apply. WordPress can request a higher limit by adding a line such as this to wp-config.php, above the line that says to stop editing:

Remove unnecessary work, large queries or recursive code after identifying the cause, then confirm the new effective limit in the host’s PHP information.
Verify permissions and files
Incorrect file permissions, a partially deployed plugin or a damaged PHP file can also cause a 500. Compare the affected deployment with a known-good copy and ask the host to verify ownership and permissions. Do not make broad permission changes without the host’s documented values.

Confirm the endpoint exists
On a standard WordPress installation, the file is at wp-admin/admin-ajax.php within the WordPress directory. Confirm that the file exists on the server and that the request URL includes the correct subdirectory, scheme and hostname. A site installed at https://example.com/blog, for example, must not send requests to the root-level path if WordPress actually lives under /blog.
Check rewrites, proxies and CDNs
Inspect rewrite rules, reverse-proxy mappings and CDN origin settings for a rule that routes wp-admin/admin-ajax.php to a static origin or removes the WordPress subdirectory. Purge stale CDN configuration after correcting the route. Test the origin directly if your host provides a safe method; compare the response with the public hostname.
Make the PHP handler reliable
Register the correct audience hooks
WordPress uses separate hooks for authenticated and unauthenticated requests. A callback registered only on wp_ajax_{action} will not run for a logged-out visitor. Register wp_ajax_nopriv_{action} as well when public access is intentional.
Verify the nonce before processing input
Pass a nonce with the request and check it at the top of the callback. A failed nonce should stop processing; it should not be bypassed merely to make the browser request succeed. Also check capabilities for privileged operations and sanitize, validate and authorize every submitted value.

}Keep the response format consistent with what the JavaScript expects. A callback that prints warnings, HTML or diagnostic text before returning JSON can cause a client-side failure even when the HTTP status is 200.
A controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the status and payload. Save the request URL, action, response and timestamp from DevTools.
- Reproduce privately. Test in a private window to separate cookies and sessions from site code.
- Validate the endpoint. Use
ajaxurlin admin screens or a URL generated byadmin_url( 'admin-ajax.php' )on public pages. - Validate the action. Match the case-sensitive payload value to the registered hook.
- Check audience and nonce. Confirm the correct
wp_ajax_*hook, optionalwp_ajax_nopriv_*hook and nonce field. - Classify the edge. For 403, inspect WAF, CDN, security-plugin and ModSecurity logs before changing PHP.
- Inspect server logs. For 500, identify the exact function or file before raising limits or replacing code.
- Test caching and limits. Exclude the endpoint from page caching and verify input and memory limits when the request is large.
- Test one component at a time. Disable a single plugin, then the CDN or WAF, then use a default theme, recording each result.
- Restore protection and document the fix. Remove temporary bypasses, retain the smallest necessary exception and note the changed rule or code.
When replacing admin-ajax.php is justified
Replacing the file is a last resort, not a first fix. If the file is genuinely corrupted, compare it with a fresh copy from the same WordPress version and replace only the affected core file using a trusted WordPress download. Back up the site and verify the version before copying. If the problem returns, suspect deployment, permissions, routing or a compromised installation rather than repeatedly replacing the file. Escalate to host support when you cannot access the logs, cannot change a WAF rule or see repeated failures across unrelated actions.

Production checklist
- The Network panel shows the request going to the site’s real
admin-ajax.phpendpoint. - The payload contains the expected, case-sensitive
action. - The PHP code registers the matching authenticated hook and, when needed, the unauthenticated hook.
- The nonce is generated for the intended action and verified before processing.
- The callback checks capabilities and validates every input field.
- The endpoint is excluded from page caching and is not being served a stale response.
- Firewall, CDN, security-plugin and ModSecurity logs contain no unexplained block.
- PHP and web-server logs are clear of the fatal error associated with the request.
- Memory, input-variable, post-size and hosting-resource limits match the workload.
- Temporary diagnostic bypasses have been removed after testing.
